Note: China's economic performance has impressed the world since the 1990's. However, the country's economic development has never been homogeneous or even. Understanding regional
differentiation is crucial starting point for our understanding of China's transition as a whole. It may well also be crucial in answering the question of whether China's economic reforms are state−driven or
market−driven. This seminar course explores how a variety of bottom−up economic and institutional experiements have reshaped China's different localities and driven the transition process forward.
71257 P 150 002 SEM MW 4−530P 70 EVANS Advanced Study in Political Economy of Industrial S... 4 BOHLING, J E 17
Note: "World of Commodities" − Whether it's sugar and the Atlantic system, cotton and the Industrial Revolution, or oil and globalization, commodities make the world go round. They are tools for
studying global capitalism, allowing us to ask questions about the interlocking of politics and markets, about social organization, about the cultural contact and exchange, and about the nature of power
and freedom. What is the relationship between production and consumption? How have commodity flows affected state sovereignty and empires? How have commodities led to the greater integration of
markets and cultures?
Note: "Twentieth−Century Europe: Decline or Renewal?" − At the onset of the twentieth century, Europe was the world's most prosperous continent, spreading its influence, for better or worse, around
the globe. Two world wars then battered the continent and left its influence in doubt. Global supremacy moved to the United States and the Soviet Union. through the European community, the region
regained its position of international economic leadership, but is existence, as current events have revealed, has never been secure. This course traces Europe's recent past and the challenges to its
geopolitical status and to forging European unit.
