Telethon Speech + Hearing 2010 Annual Report Marketing After three years of dedicated service, Natasha Chow, Marketing Officer, left Telethon Speech & Hearing to further her career overseas. Melissa Mattioli joined our team in July and hit the ground running with several projects, including rebranding, that will come to fruition in 2011. Telethon Speech + Hearing 2010 Annual Report Programs and Services The Early Intervention Program at Telethon Speech & Hearing consists of: • Chatterbox Program for children who have a sensorineural hearing loss • Talkabout Program for children who have a speech and language delay but not permanent hearing loss The programs are both based on developmental norms and around play. Each program is serviced by a multidisciplinary team of early intervention specialists so that the individual needs of each child and family are met in a holistic way. Chatterbox – Early Intervention Hearing Impairment Program 2010 has been a busy year for the Chatterbox program with 52 families being supported by the Centre’s team of specialists in group and individual therapy sessions. This year Pia Leeming has mentored staff members in training to become certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists through the Alexander Graham Bell Academy in the USA. The process of becoming certified involves an intensive three year mentorship program whereby mentees have to complete required hours of clinical observation, training and study. This year, three staff members have been involved in the process and have completed 30 hours each towards their certification. Many hours have been spent discussing case loads, reviewing theory, analysing recorded therapy sessions and attending workshops. Importantly, the process of staff becoming certified is to ensure the quality of our clinical practice is in keeping with current research and new knowledge, enabling the families we work with to have children with hearing impairments successfully listening and speaking. Chatterbox Playgroups The Chatterbox Playgroup program had a busy 2010 with four groups – Chatterbox Bubs, Chatterbox 1, 2 and 3, run by speech pathologists and AV Therapists Candice Gray and Felicity McNally. The focus in Chatterbox Bubs and Chatterbox 1 is on Auditory-Verbal Therapy – what is it and how it can be incorporated into the family’s busy everyday routine, play and activities. Auditory-Verbal Therapy is the application of techniques, strategies and procedures (how we do it) to enable children who are deaf or hard of hearing to learn to listen and understand spoken language in order to communicate through speech.
