Summer/<strong>fall</strong> <strong>2013</strong> COURSES<br />

<strong>Botanic</strong>al Illustration in Watercolor I<br />

Become part <strong>of</strong> the watercolor botanical tradition. Combine<br />

drawing skills and your knowledge <strong>of</strong> color mixing as you<br />

discover the delight <strong>of</strong> putting brush to paper to learn the specific<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> transparent watercolor. Instruction, demonstration<br />

and practical exercises will guide you through a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

watercolor techniques: flat and graded washes, highlights<br />

and drybrush detail. Learn to build washes for depth <strong>of</strong> tone<br />

and shading, and how to create s<strong>of</strong>t and hard edges. With<br />

these foundational skills you’ll be ready to create a finished<br />

plate in Watercolor II. Fee: $225 member, $280 non-member.<br />

Prerequisites: Pencil I, Color Mixing.<br />

Watercolor basics got you<br />

confidence as you work toward<br />

completing a finished plate<br />

from a live specimen in this<br />

media. The emphasis here<br />

is on bringing it all together.<br />

techniques through instruction, demonstration and practice, with<br />

special attention given to layering, shading and building form.<br />

Discover brush techniques and colors that enhance perspective<br />

and depth. Follow painting steps through completion, from broad<br />

washes to final detail. Learn how to fix mistakes and understand<br />

why watercolor is a forgiving medium. Fee: $225 member, $280<br />

non-member. Prerequisites: Pencil I, Color Mixing, Watercolor I,<br />

ELECTIVE COURSES<br />

Botany Spotlight: Revealing the Nature’s Secret Code<br />

Understand the difference between Golden Mean, Phyllotaxy<br />

and Fibonacci. Why are leaves opposite, whorled or alternate?<br />

Study different leaf arrangements and the theories regarding the<br />

cause <strong>of</strong> such planning. Learn the reason why the seeds are<br />

packed in tight spirals in seedpods, or why plants grow new cells<br />

in spirals. Learn how to use this knowledge for your benefit in<br />

the botanical illustration. This three-hour workshop is particularly<br />

recommended for students registered for the Patterns in Botany<br />

class. Fee: $55 member, $85 non-member. Prerequisite: Botany<br />

for the <strong>Botanic</strong>al Illustrator.<br />

the characteristic form and unique surface features for your<br />

species before documenting and drawing every detail. Consider<br />

the possibilities for a compositional masterwork in your choice<br />

<strong>of</strong> medium. Your finished piece could be the new cover for the<br />

forthcoming Index Seminum. Class limited to 10 students. Fee:<br />

$180 member, $205 non-member. Prerequisites: Botany for<br />

<strong>Botanic</strong>al Illustrators, Pencil I, Light on Form, any entry level color<br />

media with its Prerequisites.<br />
