Mysterious Black in Plants<br />
If the unusual strikes your fantasy,<br />
follow us to the “dark side” <strong>of</strong> the<br />
plant world. Be amazed: black is not<br />
black – black does not even exist.<br />
Learn to solve the mystery and intrigue<br />
<strong>of</strong> the rich, deepest colors in plants.<br />
You will select the subject matter for<br />
your final plate from a list <strong>of</strong> relevant<br />

Drawing on Tradition: On the<br />
Footsteps <strong>of</strong> Cythna Letty<br />
Cythna Letty (1895-1985) is best<br />
remembered for her exquisite illustrations<br />
in “Wild Flowers <strong>of</strong> the Transvaal” (1962).<br />
She was a prolific and passionate botanist<br />
and botanical illustrator and her works <strong>of</strong><br />
art have made her a household name<br />
Cythna Letty<br />
in South Africa. During her career, Letty<br />
published four books <strong>of</strong> her own and<br />
illustrated numerous other books on botany, including 730 plates<br />
for “Flowering Plants <strong>of</strong> South Africa.” The <strong>Gardens</strong>’ South African<br />
Plaza showcases an excellent collection <strong>of</strong> specimens. Enjoy a<br />
virtual voyage to South Africa as you learn about the collection<br />
from a <strong>Gardens</strong> expert and select a subject for your own careful<br />
study. Working in colored pencil and graphite, design a plate in<br />
the scientific style <strong>of</strong> Letty, using color for the central subject and<br />
graphite to show scaled botanical details that fill the page. Fee:<br />

Leafy Greens in Colored<br />
Pencil<br />
Focus on foliage! The greens <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>summer</strong> are just as beautiful as<br />
the blooms. Start with a study <strong>of</strong><br />
nuanced shades <strong>of</strong> green, and<br />

for rendering margins, surface texture and venation. Tackle the<br />
tough ones, including variegated, highly textured and translucent<br />
leaves. Create a series <strong>of</strong> studies that show your understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> leaves and greens. Your new skills for depicting leaf form and<br />
