COLORED PENCIL
Mysterious Black in Plants
If the unusual strikes your fantasy,
follow us to the “dark side” of the
plant world. Be amazed: black is not
black – black does not even exist.
Learn to solve the mystery and intrigue
of the rich, deepest colors in plants.
You will select the subject matter for
your final plate from a list of relevant

species that will be provided at the
registration of this class. We arrange the plant for you and you
will decode its dark hues. With classroom instruction, explore
the deepest colors of the plant world and create a hauntingly
beautiful final plate that emphasizes your new advanced color
layering techniques and composition. Fee: $225 member, $280
non-member. Prerequisites: Pencil I, Light on Form, Color Layering
for Colored Pencil, Colored Pencil I.

Drawing on Tradition: On the
Footsteps of Cythna Letty
Cythna Letty (1895-1985) is best
remembered for her exquisite illustrations
in “Wild Flowers of the Transvaal” (1962).
She was a prolific and passionate botanist
and botanical illustrator and her works of
art have made her a household name
Cythna Letty
in South Africa. During her career, Letty
published four books of her own and
illustrated numerous other books on botany, including 730 plates
for “Flowering Plants of South Africa.” The Gardens’ South African
Plaza showcases an excellent collection of specimens. Enjoy a
virtual voyage to South Africa as you learn about the collection
from a Gardens expert and select a subject for your own careful
study. Working in colored pencil and graphite, design a plate in
the scientific style of Letty, using color for the central subject and
graphite to show scaled botanical details that fill the page. Fee:
$225 member, $285 non-member. Prerequisites: Pencil I, Light
on Form, Pencil II, Colored Pencil II with its Prerequisites.
Leafy Greens in Colored
Pencil
Focus on foliage! The greens of
summer are just as beautiful as
the blooms. Start with a study of
nuanced shades of green, and

then add techniques and tricks
for rendering margins, surface texture and venation. Tackle the
tough ones, including variegated, highly textured and translucent
leaves. Create a series of studies that show your understanding
of leaves and greens. Your new skills for depicting leaf form and
color will improve all your future illustrations. Fee: $225 member,

that provides practically

layered colors, rich dry and powder mixing and fine detail. Learn
to use this surface to full advantage, employing the color of the
paper as an integral part of your image. Fee: $225 member,
