ILLUMINATION<br />
Beginners Techniques for<br />
<strong>Botanic</strong>al Illumination<br />
The earliest confirmed examples <strong>of</strong><br />
illuminated manuscripts in existence<br />
today originated over 2,000 years<br />
ago. While some <strong>of</strong> the oldest ones<br />
were made <strong>of</strong> papyrus, calf, goat<br />
or sheep parchment was used for<br />

writing and illumination. Throughout<br />
history the floral decorative elements along margins, around<br />
capital letters or in images have been an important informative<br />
element <strong>of</strong> the narrative. Explore the symbolism and traditional<br />
design components <strong>of</strong> this ancient design form. Learn to mix the<br />
traditional manuscript colors and practice the application <strong>of</strong> a<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> gold media. Through step-by-step instruction you will<br />
design a personal one-<strong>of</strong>-a-kind illumination with floral elements<br />

Drawing on Tradition: The<br />
Illuminated Calligraphy <strong>of</strong> Irene<br />
Wellington<br />
Irene Wellington (1904-1984) is<br />
widely acknowledged as one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
most renowned and influential people<br />
in the development <strong>of</strong> 20th century<br />
calligraphy. She had an important role<br />
in the transformation <strong>of</strong> calligraphy from<br />
a medieval craft to a modern art form.<br />
Irene Wellington<br />
You will first analyze Ms. Wellington’s<br />
calligraphy styles and her design elements based on Victorian<br />
illustrations. Learn then to combine calligraphic lettering with<br />
botanical illustration as you work with colored inks and gouache<br />
or watercolor. You will design and complete a composition using<br />
italic or copperplate calligraphic writing as a compliment to your<br />
favorite botanical subject matter. Fee: $225 member, $280 nonmember.<br />

Start with color studies to explore<br />
the qualities <strong>of</strong> watercolor pencils<br />

Experiment with graphite pencil and<br />
ink as embellishments as you develop and work on sketches from<br />
your journal, then put your new skills to use to create a finished<br />
botanical plate in this fresh and fluid medium. Fee: $225 member,<br />

Plants that Changed<br />
Civilizations<br />
How did black pepper lead to the<br />
creation <strong>of</strong> the world’s first banking<br />
system in Venice? How did the<br />
sunflower save lives from the sinking<br />
Titanic in 1912? And how did the<br />
discovery <strong>of</strong> pineapple in the New<br />
World inspire the invention <strong>of</strong> the<br />
greenhouse in Europe? If you are keen<br />

to various plants, this workshop is for you. You will focus on<br />
the history and sociology <strong>of</strong> plants in different regions <strong>of</strong> the<br />
world. Select your favorite plant and create a finished plate in<br />
watercolor centering your attention on graded washes, color<br />
choice and interesting composition. Bill Laws’ recently published<br />
and beautifully illustrated book “50 Plants the Changed the<br />
