Session with Fairfax County EDA<br />
on <strong>Business</strong> Avenues in <strong>US</strong><br />
The Karnataka Branch of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indo</strong>-American Chamber of<br />
Commerce (IACC) in association with Fairfax County<br />
Economic Development Authority, and <strong>the</strong> business<br />
consulting firm Innoversant Solutions Pvt. Ltd organized a<br />
business seminar on “The current business opportunities<br />
for Indian companies from <strong>the</strong> ICT, Defence and<br />
Homeland Security sec<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong> <strong>US</strong> market.” on<br />
11 February 2011 at <strong>the</strong> Royal Orchid Hotel, Bangalore.<br />
The key speaker at <strong>the</strong> seminar, Asher Kotz, Head of<br />
International <strong>Business</strong> at <strong>the</strong> Fairfax County EDA, focused<br />
on <strong>the</strong> exciting business opportunities for Indian<br />
companies <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong> U.S. market in <strong>the</strong> background of<br />
flourishing Indian economy, <strong>the</strong> increasing global footprints<br />
of Indian companies, and <strong>the</strong> tremendous business<br />
prospects offered by defence procurement, <strong>US</strong><br />
Healthcare bill, Stimulus Packages and <strong>the</strong> <strong>US</strong> Federal<br />
Govt contracts and spending.<br />
Kotz also spoke about <strong>the</strong> strategies for Indian<br />
companies <strong>to</strong> enter and expand in <strong>the</strong> <strong>US</strong> market by<br />
establishing a presence in Fairfax County, Virginia.<br />
The event was of significant interest <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> member<br />
companies of <strong>the</strong> IACC Karnataka branch and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
growth plans for <strong>the</strong> lucrative <strong>US</strong> market. The members<br />
were given time <strong>to</strong> interact with <strong>the</strong> speaker and ask<br />
specific questions about spreading <strong>the</strong>ir business <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>US</strong>.<br />

Session on Unmasking Budget '11<br />
The Karnataka Branch organized an interactive breakfast<br />
session titled “Unmasking <strong>the</strong> Implications Budget 2011”<br />
on 4 March 2011 at Hotel Fortune Select JP Cosmos,<br />
Bangalore. The event comprised three keynote sessions<br />
conducted by Ms. Vasudha Acharya, Senior Manager<br />
Direct Tax, Dr. Suddhasatwa Roy, Senior Manager, and K<br />
Baskar, Senior Manager Indirect Tax of Deloitte Touche<br />
Tohmatsu India Private Limited.<br />
The event commenced with V. Srinivasan, IACC,<br />
Karnataka Committee Member delivering a welcome<br />
speech and introducing <strong>the</strong> speakers of <strong>the</strong> session. The<br />
seminar provided an overview of <strong>the</strong> India Budget 2011,<br />
addressing Direct Taxes, Indirect Taxes and <strong>the</strong>ir impact<br />
on <strong>the</strong> economy, significant policy proposals and an<br />
economic survey, complete with precision analysis and<br />
razor sharp insights.<br />
The introduction was followed by a presentation from Dr<br />
Roy, who surveyed <strong>the</strong> economy and discussed <strong>the</strong> impact<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Indian Economy on business. He focused on <strong>the</strong><br />
state of <strong>the</strong> overall economy, along with a discussion on<br />
key metrics. He gave an interesting outlook on various<br />
sec<strong>to</strong>rs through a study of microeconomic indica<strong>to</strong>rs and<br />
current developments in <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
Dr. Roy's presentation was followed by an insightful view<br />
on direct taxes by Ms. Vasudha Acharya. In a very succinct<br />
manner she spoke about <strong>the</strong> key changes in direct taxes<br />
and threw light on its impact on various industries.<br />
Baskar <strong>the</strong>n covered <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>pic of “Indirect taxes”. He<br />
focused on <strong>the</strong> key changes effected in <strong>the</strong> new budget<br />
and how <strong>the</strong>y will affect different producers and<br />
consumers and <strong>the</strong> coverage of wish lists. He drove <strong>the</strong><br />
point home by giving examples from <strong>the</strong> industry which<br />
were very effective.<br />
The presentation was very well conducted; all <strong>the</strong><br />
speakers came down <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> level of <strong>the</strong> audience <strong>to</strong> help<br />
<strong>the</strong>m understand <strong>the</strong> implications of <strong>the</strong> Budget on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
companies. They answered questions through <strong>the</strong><br />
presentation <strong>to</strong> make sure that everyone was on <strong>the</strong> same<br />
page and very tactfully with humor and wit presented an<br />
informative and relevant session on <strong>the</strong> Indian Budget<br />
2011.<br />
