Education Innovations
To see AOGP staff and core stakeholders
from many different roles and perspectives
come together, is no better illustrated than
in the ideas, vision, planning, preparation,
and delivery of what AOGP presents to a
newly selected registrar:
AOGP Registrar Reference Manual
makeover
2010 saw the well-established AOGP
Registrar Reference Manual go through a
major overhaul, in its presentation, content
and layout. The new format and revised
content addressed the following needs:
• A consistent reference to RACGP
and ACRRM training requirements.
• A comprehensive reconciliation
between the AOGP online education
management resource (GPRime
information and tools) and hard-copy
reference tools.
• A refreshed style and format for
communicating the AOGP education
framework
• Meet the perennial challenge of
simplifying the user’s navigation (with
particular focus on the Registrar
as the main user) through the
comprehensive information offered
in this manual and other companion
documents.
• Incorporate the newly developed
AOGP Blueprint training map
structure into the ‘Training Information’
section of the Manual.
• Provide a common language and
structure for AOGP staff, Registrars,
Supervisors and Practice Managers
to use throughout the Registrar’s
AOGP training.
The new edition was introduced to all
core stakeholders as part of out-ofpractice
education forums during the
second half of 2010 and distributed to
all current cohorts of Registrars, as well
as Supervisors and Practice Managers. It
was also used to guide the 2011 cohort’s
pre-entry meeting, formally introduced as
a reference resource, and provided to the
new Registrars as part of their Orientation
in December 2010. To date the manual
has been received very positively by all
stakeholders.
Orientation
Another regular activity that was
comprehensively reviewed and creatively
updated was the annual Orientation
program, conducted in December 2010.
The AOGP teams decided to meet the
challenge of a larger cohort (36 Registrars
in the 2011 cohort) with the development
of an innovative, informative, yet
interactive and stimulating program. This
new approach to introducing incoming
Registrars to the training program was
met with overwhelming positive feedback.
The Registrars confirmed that it met
all their objectives and most notably
feedback suggested the event served to
excite them about embarking on speciality
training in General Practice.
iPad pilot for 2011 cohort
AOGP prides itself on being an early
adopter of new ideas and opportunities.
To this end we have put in place a pilot
integrating the use of the iPad as a
training resource tool specifically with
the 2011 cohort of Registrars. This pilot
began as part of their out-of-practice
training during their Orientation workshop
in December 2010 and will continue over
the course of 2011 with the iPad being
used for in-practice and out-of-practise
learning. An evaluation plan is in place to
assess the outcomes of this pilot at the
conclusion of the 2011 education year
to determine the feasibility of rolling it out
beyond the new cohort of Registrars.
The Business of General Practice
The Business of General Practice
in-practice teaching modules is the
culmination of significant work that began
in 2008 as the ‘brain-child’ of Dr Sam
Smart who at the time was working with
AOGP in the role of MEC (Rural). In
2010 we are proud to see the realisation
of this foundation work through the
significant efforts of Deb Docking and
Danny Haydon, in their roles as AOGP
Practice Manager Liaison Officers
(PMLO) as well as Sarah Meertens,
Roberta Morris and Carolyn Cheah.
This work will meet an important need
identified by Registrars, Supervisors and
Practice Managers alike.The Modules as
summarised, are due to be implemented
in 2011.
