A meeting with members 

of the Rotary Club in 


Jorge L. Almodovar (the Guánica Chapter), 

Antonio Morales(Fajardo Chapter), and Guillermo 

Martínez met with various residents from 

Vieques who expressed interest in forming or 

creating a Rotary Club Chapter in Vieques. The 

Rotary International principal campaign is to 

eliminate the polio disease in the World. Their 

campaign has been very successful and even 

though it still exist in four countries (Afghanistan, 

India, Congo-Africa and Pakistan), their 

goal is to eliminate it by 2014. Other projects 

are fellowships and to empower women even 

though they became members in 1989 and 

the Rotary Intentional was founded in 1905. 

The purpose of the meeting was to establish 

if there was an interest to organize a club 

in Vieques with a minimum of 25 people or 

residents. They would provide all assistance; 

economic support till the chapter is able to 

sustain itself.

Jorge L. Almodóvar (Capítulo de Guánica), 

Antonio Morales (Capítulo de Fajardo), y 

Guillermo Martínez se reunieron con varios 

residentes de Vieques, quienes expresaron 

interés en formar o crear un Club Rotario en 

Vieques. La principal campaña Internacional 

del Club es la de eliminar la enfermedad del 

polio en el Mundo. La campaña ha sido exitosa 

y aún continúa en cuatro países (Afganistán, 

India, Congo-África y Pakistán), su meta es 

eliminar la enfermedad para el 2014. Otros 

proyectos consisten de becas y permitir a las 

mujeres, aún cuando podían ser miembros 

desde 1989 y el Rotario fue fundado en 1905. 

El propósito de la reunión fue verificar si 

había interés en organizar un club en Vieques 

con un mínimo de 25 personas o residentes. 

Ellos les proveerán toda la ayuda y apoyo 

económico hasta que el capítulo pueda sostenerse 

por sí mismo.

BIKE 101 

Black Beard Sports sponsored a BIKE 101 afternoon 

at the Plaza on 23rd September from 1-3 

pm. During the two hours, youngsters were provided 

the opportunity to learn from technicians 

on had how to do basic repair on their bicycles. 

The event was targeted to school age children in 

an attempt to engage them in worthwhile activities. 

This work shop provided them with free 

parts and labor to repair or tune their bicycles. 

BBS is asking people to donate the dusty 

unused bike sitting in the garage, any bike parts or 

even volunteer to help clean, repair bicycles during 

our next Bike 101 session. Stay tuned for dates. n

Reach for Success 

The word is getting out. Reach for Success is expanding and growing 

to include sixty students ages 12-18 who are enrolled in after school 

activities. These students are dedicated to improving themselves 

and providing services to their community. Additionally, leaders from 

Vieques who are committed to volunteering their services this year, 

include Maria Simons, Lourdes Santoni, Shirley Nieves, Aitza Rivera, 

Milagros Ortiz, Erica Schnell, Rosalie, and Brenda Torres. 

While these volunteers are designing workshops in English, Energy 

Conservation, Dance and computer skills, the students have been busy painting and utilizing their new headquarters 

which will include meeting rooms, a computer lab and a garden for learning horticultural skills. More

El mensaje está llegando. Alcanzando el Exito está creciendo y expandiéndose para incluir a sesenta y 

dos estudiantes entre las edades de 12-18, inscritos en actividades extracurriculares. Estos estudiantes

en edad escolar en un esfuerzo por encaminarlos 

en actividades que valgan la pena. Este taller les 

proporcionó partes y mano de obra gratis para 

que pudieran reparar o dar mantenimiento a sus 

bicicletas. 

BBS está pidiendo a la comunidad que donen las 

bicicletas que no están usando, piezas de bicicletas 

e incluso hasta tiempo voluntario para ayudar a limpiar 

y reparar bicicletas durante la próxima sesión 

de BIKE 101. Este pendiente para las fechas. n

Youth 360° 

Germán Rieckehoff High School, Isabel II, 

Vieques—Students at German Riekehoff High School 

participated in a week long workshop focused on 

recognizing violence as part of the school’s Values 

campaign. This initiative culminated in the much 

anticpated Clothsline Project on the 31st of Oct. 

The Clothsline Project is a visual demonstration 

of messages and illustrations reflected in 

T-shirts designed by survivors of violence or by 

someone who loves a person who has been a victim 

of domestic violence. The project’s purpose is to 

increase or promote awareness of the impact of 

violence on families. This initiative was sponsored 

by Black Beard Sports, W Retreat and Spa, Villa Uno, 

El Sombrero Viejo, Vieques Baila and community 

volunteers. The initiative, Youth 360°, a business 

and community coalition focused on improving the 

condition of the young people of Vieques.

Escuela Superior Germán Rieckehoff, Isabel II, 

Vieques – los estudiantes de la Germán Rieckehoff 

participaron en un taller de una semana enfocado 

en el reconocimiento de la violencia como parte de 

la campaña de valores de la escuela. Esta iniciativa 

finalizó con el esperado Proyecto de “Clothsline” o 

tendedero el 31 de octubre. 

El Proyecto “Clothsline” es una demostración 

visual de mensajes e ilustraciones reflejadas en 

camisetas diseñadas por sobrevivientes de la 

violencia o por alguien que ama a la persona que ha 

sido víctima de violencia doméstica. El propósito 

del proyecto es concientizar sobre el impacto de la 

violencia en las familias. Esta iniciativa es auspiciada 

por Black Bear Sports, W Retreat & Spa, Villa 

Uno, El Sobrero Viejo, Vieques Baila y voluntarios 

de la comunidad. La iniciativa, Youth 360° es una 

coalición de negocios y la comunidad orientada a 

mejorar la situación de los jóvenes de Vieques.

Pilot project on Puerto 

Mosquito tour guides 

certification held by VCHT 

The Vieques Conservation & Historical Trust 

held a two-week course for tour guides currently 

working in Puerto Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay 

and locals aspiring to be guides. This pilot program 

on certification was funded by the Environmental 

Protection Agency and the VCHT. 

Lizbeth OrtizThe course succeeded not only in 

providing the guides with tools and information for 

their work, but also in promoting better coordination 

between companies to improve safety and 

participate in the conservation of the bay. This is 

one of many conservation efforts currently being 

implemented by the VCHT. In the future, other 

workshops about Puerto Mosquito, its importance 

and fragility, and how we can all help to conserve it, 

will be offered for the local hospitality and tourism 

industry, municipal elected officials and agency 

heads, and enforcement agencies. 

The course was designed by the VCHT’s Director 

of Community Affairs, Mark Martin Bras, who told 

Vieques Events “We understand the passion that 

guides feel for this magical place; they constitute 

the best spokespersons to educate visitors 

towards the preservation of not just the bay but the 

natural world we belong to. I congratulate all who 

graduated and invite them to continue to be the 

wizards of the bay of stars”. n

Fideicomiso lleva a 

cabo proyecto piloto de 

certificación para guías 

de Puerto Mosquito 

El Fideicomiso de Conservación e Historia de 

Vieques llevó a cabo un curso de dos semanas de 

duración para guías que actualmente trabajan en la 

Bahía Bioluminiscente de Vieques y residentes que 

desean trabajar como guías. La Agencia Federal 

de Protección Ambiental (EPA) y el Fideicomiso 

financiaron este proyecto piloto de certificación. 

El curso no sólo fue exitoso en proveerles a los 

guías herramientas e información para su trabajo, 

sino que también sirvió para promover una mejor 

coordinación entre las compañías para mejorar la 

seguridad y participación en la conservación de 

la bahía. Esta es uno de los muchos esfuerzos de 

conservación que actualmente está llevando a 

cabo el Fideicomiso. Próximamente, se ofrecerán 

otros talleres sobre Puerto Mosquito, su importancia 

y fragilidad, y cómo todos podemos 

contribuir a su conservación para la 

industria turística y de la hospitalidad 

local, así como para oficiales electos, 

jefes de agencia y personal de seguridad 

municipales. 

El curso fue diseñado por el Director 

de Relaciones con la Comunidad del 

Fideicomiso, Mark Martin Bras, quien le 

expresó a Vieques Events “Conocemos 

la pasión que sienten los guías por este 

lugar mágico; ellos son los mejores 

portavoces para educar a los visitantes 

sobre la preservación no sólo de la 

bahía sino del mundo natural al que 

pertenecemos. Felicito a los graduados 

y los invito a que continúen siendo los

92 years 

Ruth Miller 

Ruth Miller, (better known as Penny Miller’s 

mother), was honored on November 11 at the 

NLUS Vieques Council picnic. The 92 year-old 

Mrs. Miller served as a nurse in Europe during 

World War II. She was in London during 

the bombing, and later aided Jewish children 

in finding shelters around Europe. Presenting 

Mrs. Miller with an award and a bouquet 

of roses is NLUS President Hector Matos and 

Vieques ex-mayor Liche Castano, who was 

wounded three times during World War II. 

Congratulations to these local heroes! n

Ruth Miller, (Madre de Penny Miller), fue 

premiada el 11 de noviembre en el pasadía 

del Concilio del NLUS de Vieques. La Sra. 

Miller, de 92 años, trabajó como enfermera 

en Europa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. 

Ella se encontraba en Londres durante 

el bombardeo, y más tarde ayudó a niños 

judíos en la búsqueda de refugios en toda 

Europa. El Presidente de NLUS, Héctor Matos 

y el ex alcalde de Vieques Liche Castaño 

(herido en tres ocasiones durante la Segunda 

Guerra Mundial), entregaron el premio y un 

ramo de rosas a la Sra. Miller. Felicitaciones a 

estos tres héroes locales. n

Mon Silva, from the 

dawns of eastern Vieques 

has created plenas that come 

from the shores of the sea, 

not from the San Antón barrio 

of Ponce. Therefore in Vieques 

and in the most remote 

households and in the quiet 

quarters of the night you can 

hear with love and nostalgia 

the tambourines and the 

voice of the troubadour of 

Vieques that says: “The plena 

that I know, is neither from 

China nor Japan, because 

that plena comes from Vieques and is the plena that 

Mon sings”. 

That is the voice of the brave Viequense minstrel 

Mon Silva, champion of the culture of Isla Nena, 

an intellectual who in his intense life as a creator 

has made a first-rate contribution: his poems Song 

to Isla Nena (1988), Rhyming with Mon ( 1991), 

In my beautiful Vieques (2005). In addition to two 

recording projects, “Listen to my Décima” (2000), 

traditional variety music with master musician Edwin 

Colón Zayas and his Taller Campesino. 

This is a small angle from the contribution of the 

troubadour, poet and writer of fine sensitivity for the 

Puertorrican and Viequense culture. 

The most recent work, in his musical universe, 

Repique de Plena en la Isla Nena also with master 

musician Colón Zayas (2010) established him as one 

of the examples of popular music and one of the rescuers 

of Plena, not a flower from a greenhouse but an 

intense voice of the heart of Vieques and Puerto Rico. 

We must remember that the troubadour Mon Silva, 

in his customary and magical efforts has presented 

thirteen Christmas trovas, the first in 1998. Already 

thirteen of this memorial work! This difficult exercise, 

between love, poetry and music is carried out by Chelimón 

Productions, Inc., a nonprofit organization, 

its Board of Directors and kind volunteers dedicated 

to presenting historical and cultural activities on the 

island of Vieques. 

*Plena is a narrative song from the coastal regions 

of Puerto Rico. Its origins have been claimed as far 

back as 1875 and as late as 1920. As rural farmers 

moved to San Juan and other cities, they brought 

plena with them and eventually added horns and 

improvised call and response vocals. Lyrics generally 

deal with stories or current events, though some are 

light-hearted or humorous. 

Esto lo podemos repetir por todos los 

pueblos de Puerto Rico y de la Isla Nena, 

Vieques el corazón del Arco Caribeño en 

su repique de amor recuerda las palabras del escritor 

Don Tomás Blanco en su libro Elogio de 

la plena: “el que escucha una plena, si no mueve 

un pie, mueve una nalga”. 

Mon Silva, desde las amanecidas del este de 

la Isla Nena ha creado unas plenas que llegan 

desde las orillas del mar; no desde el San Antón 

de Ponce. Por eso en la Isla Nena y en los más 

recónditos lugares hogareños y en los tranquilos 

aposentos de la noche se escuchan a cada 

instante con amor y nostalgia los panderos y la 

voz del trovador de Vieques que dice: “La plena 

que yo conozco, no es de la China ni del Japón, 

porque la plena viene de Vieques y es esa plena 

que canta Mon”. 

Esa es la brava voz del trovador viequense 

Mon Silva, adalid de la cultura de la Isla Nena, 

intelectual que en su intensa vida de creador 

ha dejado una aportación de primer orden: sus 

poemarios Canto a Isla Nena (1988), Rimando 

con Mon (1991), En mi Vieques bello (2005). 

Además de dos proyectos discográficos: “Oye 

la décima mía” (2000), música típica variada, 

con el maestro Edwin Colón Zayas y su Taller 

Campesino. 

Esto es un pequeño ángulo en la aportación 

del trovador, poeta y escritor, de fina sensibilidad, 

para la cultura puertorriqueña y viequense. 

El más reciente trabajo, en su universo musical, 

Repique de plena en Isla Nena, también 

con el maestro Colón Zayas (2010) lo consagró 

como uno de 

los ejemplos 

de la música 

popular y uno 

de los rescatadores 

de 

la plena, que 

no es flor de 

invernadero 

sino viva voz 

del corazón 

de Vieques y 

Puerto Rico.

noche la bahía bioluminiscente Puerto Mosquito. El cielo 

nocturno, literalmente repleto de estrellas, se suma a la experiencia 

bioluminiscente. Antes de reservar su viaje, por 

favor, tome nota de algunos detalles importantes. 

Puerto Mosquito Bay is one of the most magnificent examples 

of the world’s few remaining bioluminescent bays. The Biobay 

experience is a must see natural phenomenon where the 

water glows when the dinoflagellate microorganisms in it are 

agitated. Our Bio-bay is the best bioluminescent bay in all the 

Caribbean and most likely, the brightest the world has ever seen. It is representative 

of what a bioluminescent bay should look like when it’s healthy. 

The bay actually glows, giving off a greenish-white neon-like light when the 

waters are disturbed. 

A progress report was done back in 2004, by Roy Armstrong, from the 

Marine Sciences Department for the Puerto Mosquito Watershed, Vieques, 

PR. In this report it is stated “Bioluminescence (the emission of light by 

living organisms) in Puerto Mosquito is caused almost exclusively by 

microscopic phytoplankton called dinoflagellates. This splendor of light may 

be in peril due to the unsustainable human activities in the surrounding 

uplands and along the shoreline of this shallow marine environment. With 

the increased tourist activities and the current development practices within 

the surrounding area, bioluminescence in this bay may be at risk in the near 

future resulting from excessive erosion and deposition of sediments and 

contaminants.” 

We’ve already seen what carelessness and contamination can do to 

another one of our bioluminescent bays in La Parguera. Unfortunately, the 

bio bay there now has the least amount of bioluminescence out of the three 

here in Puerto Rico and this is due to excessive human activity and pollution 

from diesel boat fuel and other chemicals, it’s been said the bay hardly glows 

anymore. It is important to note that the current laws forbid a licensed 

operator from letting a tourist enter the bio-bay waters here in Vieques, this 

is for the protection of the bay from pesticides, sun block agents and other 

chemicals tourists use on their skin that can be dangerous to the existence

lo más probable, la más brillante que el mundo haya visto. Es representativa de 

cómo debe lucir una bahía bioluminiscente saludable. Actualmente, cuando las 

aguas son agitadas, la bahía brilla con un color blanco verdoso, parecido a la luz 

de neón. 

Un informe de progreso fue realizado en el 2004 por Roy Armstrong, del 

Departamento de Ciencias Marinas para la Cuenca de Puerto Mosquito, Vieques, 

PR. En este informe se establece que la “Bioluminiscencia (la emisión de luz por 

organismos vivos) en Puerto Mosquito es causada casi exclusivamente por el fitoplancton 

microscópico conocido como dinoflagelado. Este esplendor de luz puede 

estar en peligro debido a las actividades humanas no sostenibles en los terrenos 

circundantes y a lo largo de la costa de este poco profundo ambiente marino. Con 

el aumento de las actividades turísticas y las prácticas actuales de desarrollo 

dentro de los alrededores, la bioluminiscencia de esta bahía pudiera estar en 

riesgo en un futuro cercano, como resultado de la erosión excesiva y la deposición 

de sedimentos y contaminantes. 

Ya hemos visto lo que el descuido y la contaminación han hecho a otra de 

nuestras bahías bioluminiscentes en La Parguera. Por desgracia, esta bahía tiene 

la menor cantidad de bioluminiscencia de las tres que hay en Puerto Rico debido 

al exceso de actividad humana y la contaminación de los botes de diesel y otros 

químicos; se dice que la bahía ya no brilla más. Es importante señalar que la 

legislación vigente prohíbe a un operador con licencia dejar entrar a un turista 

en las aguas de la bahía en Vieques, ésto para proteger a la bahía de pesticidas, 

agentes bloqueadores solares y otros químicos que los turistas utilizan en su piel 

y que pueden ser peligrosos para la existencia de los dinoflagelados en esta bahía. 

Puerto Mosquito también es un vivero caribeño para muchas de las criaturas 

que habitan nuestro océano, incluyendo tiburones, tortugas marinas y aves

nursery for many of our ocean’s creatures including, sharks, sea turtles 

and migrating birds. It’s important to respect Mother Nature’s natural cycles 

while observing her beauty. 

Make sure you hire a licensed operator when you book your trip as there 

are several illegal operators around the bay. Licensed operators are specially 

trained to be more conscientious and concerned about protecting you 

and the bay, insuring it’s preservation for our future generations to come. 

Licensed operators can give you the best experience for your money as they 

are the most informative. Recently, in early November, the Vieques Conservation 

and Historical Trust in Esperanza held a workshop where detailed 

information was given to those concerned about protecting and preserving 

our precious natural treasures. Many local citizens, hotel and villa operators, 

as well as, licensed and permitted tour operators were in attendance at this 

event focusing on preserving and maintaining our islands natural resources.

Recientemente, visité a Puerto Rico 

(hacían casi seis meses desde mi última 

visita) y no podía esperar a regresar a mi 

hogar, Vieques. 

La ansiedad de regresar se apoderó de 

mí, no porque Vieques tenga las playas 

más hermosas (lo cual es obvio), sino 

que el estar aquí me ayuda a respirar 

PAZ, solo PAZ. 

Amo a Vieques y celebro sus virtudes, 

las mismas que encontré en noviembre 

del 1999. El 1999 estuvo lleno de lucha, 

paciencia, y de tratar de sanar las heridas de mucho dolor 

y tragedia. Siempre estaré agradecida a Vieques por 

MUCHAS cosas. Vieques me salvó, salvó mi alma y sanó 

las heridas de mi familia. Es por ésto que moriré con una 

sonrisa en este pedazo de terruño. 

Los viequenses me aceptaron, una mujer griega/puertorriqueña 

de San Juan; sus sonrisas y amor incondicional 

hicieron que inmediatamente me enamorara de este lugar. 

Con todo mi corazón, estoy agradecida y vamos a 

continuar celebrando a Vieques por siempre. 

Celebramos la unidad de una comunidad cuando 

damos un paseo por el pueblo. Saludamos al Administrador del Correo, 

al cajero del Banco, al pescador, los personajes en la esquina de Alicia, los 

problemáticos, los líderes políticos, etc. 

Los rayos de la salida del sol entran a través de mi balcón y me siento 

feliz en mi isla adoptiva. Una vez se pone el sol, yo sólo celebro que llevo 

una vida tranquila en este pedazo de tierra, a pesar de que es descuidada 

por el Gobierno de Fortuño y de que nuestro sistema de transportación 

marítima es un caos. 

Quiero finalizar diciendo: LARGA VIDA A VIEQUES, a los viequenses 

y a su deseo de sonreír a pesar de... 

Recently, I visited Puerto Rico (it was almost six months 

since my last visit) and I couldn’t wait to return to my 

home, Vieques. 

The anxiety to return overtook me, not because Vieques 

has the most beautiful beaches (which is obvious), but being 

here helps me to breath PEACE, only PEACE. 

I would love Vieques to celebrate its virtues, the same 

ones I encountered in November of 1999. The 1999 full of 

struggle, patience and trying to heal the wounds of much 

pain and tragedy. I will always be grateful to Vieques for so 

MANY things. Vieques saved me, saved 

my soul and healed my own family’s 

wounds. That is why I will die here in 

this piece of land with a smile. 

Viequenses accepted me, a Greek/Puerto 

Rican woman from San Juan, and their 

smiles and unconditional love made me 

fall in love with this place immediately. 

With all my heart, I am grateful and let 

us continue to celebrate Vieques forever. 

Let’s celebrate that we do not have traffic 

jams or traffic lights, only stop signs. 

Celebrate the unity of a community when we take a walk through 

town. We say hello to the postmaster, the teller at the Bank, the fishermen, 

the personalities in the corner of Alicia’s, the troublemakers, the 

political leaders, etc. 

The sunrise peaks thru my balcony and I feel happy in my adopted 

island. Once the sun is up, I only celebrate that I lead a tranquil life 

in this piece of land even though it is neglected by the Government of 

Fortuño and our maritime transportation system is dire. 

I only want to finish stating that: LONG LIVE VIEQUES, the 

Viequenses and their desire to smile even though...

although ubiquitous on Vieques, 

the passionfruit is actually a 

native of South America. In fact, 

in the year 1610 the Mexican 

Friar Emmanuel de Villages 

encountered the plant and was 

immediately enraptured with 

its fragrant, complexly formed flowers and became 

utterly convinced the blossoms depicted the Passion 

of Jesus – hence the common English name “passionflower.” 

The creative friar interpreted its curling 

tendrils as representing the lash of Jesus’ scourging; 

the floral column as the pillar to which he was bound; 

the 72 radiating filaments as the crown of thorns; 

the 3 stigmas as the 3 nails used to crucify Him; the 

5 anthers as His 5 wounds; the foliage as the Centurian’s 

spear and the round fruit as the world He came 

to save. An amazingly inspired four hundred year old 

allegory, to be sure! 

Called parcha in Puerto Rico, parchita maracuya 

in Cuba and grenadilla in other Spanish speaking 

countries its scientific name Passiflora edulis 

translates from the botanical Latin as the edible 

passionfruit. The fruit of this straight species is typically 

a dull purple. But the subspecies most familiar 

to residents of Vieques (and Isla Grande, as well) is 

P. e. flavicarpa, translating as “edible, yellow-fruited 

passionflower” an accurate scientific description. 

Passionfruit is a shallow-rooted tendriled vine with 

deep-green, 3-lobed foliage. Its striking 3-inch blue 

and white flowers are highly ornamental and fragrant 

– only lasting a single day - and produce 3-inch nearly 

round fruit upon pollination. The fruit ripens to pale 

yellow and falls off the vine when entirely ripe. Older, 

wrinkled specimens are wonderful to eat – and it is 

these wrinkled specimens that are most often encountered 

in Stateside gourmet markets. Simply cut the 

globoid in half and scoop out the sweet-tart pulp with a 

spoon – the edible seeds add a nice crunch. 

The juicy pulp can be utilized to make sweet 

sauces, gelatinized desserts, candies, ice creams and 

sorbets, cake frostings and fillings, meringue-based 

desserts, chiffon pies, custards, cold fruit soups and 

cocktails. 

The parcha even has medicinal uses; Puerto Rican 

healers recommend eating large quantities of the 

fruit to lower blood pressure. And there is currently 

a revival by the European pharmaceutical industry 

in the use of the glycoside passiflorine in cardiatic 

cases. The pulp contains a fair amount of vitamin C, 

carotenes, vitamin A, niacin, riboflavin, phosphorous 

and potassium. 

Passionfruit couldn’t be easier to grow; only 

requiring full sun and a sturdy 7-foot wire support 

upon which to climb. Regular watering will keep the 

vine in continuous production. Propagation is usually 

accomplished via seeds.

Cuba y grenadilla en otros lugares donde se habla español, 

su nombre científico Passiflora edulis que se traduce del 

latín botánico como la parcha comestible. El fruto de esta 

especie suele ser de un color púrpura opaco. La subespecie 

más conocida por los residentes de Vieques (y la Isla 

Grande) es P.e. flavicarpa, que se traduce como “comestible, 

de color amarillo-fruto de la parcha”, una exacta descripción 

científica. La parcha o Fruta de la Pasión es una 

enredadera de raíces poco profundas y de un color verde 

oscuro, con 3 hojas lobuladas. Sus sorprendentes flores 

blancas y azules de 3 pulgadas son muy ornamentales y 

fragantes – que solo duran un día - y producen un fruto 

redondo de alrededor de 3 pulgadas en la polinización. La 

fruta madura a un color amarillo pálido y se cae de la enredadera 

cuando está completamente madura. Los frutos 

maduros y arrugados son maravillosos para comer - y son 

estos especímenes arrugados los que se encuentran más 

a menudo en los mercados gourmet de Estados Unidos. 

Simplemente corte la fruta a la mitad y con una cuchara, 

saque la pulpa agridulce – las semillas comestibles le 

añaden un agradable crujido. 

La jugosa pulpa se puede utilizar para confeccionar 

salsas, postres, gelatinas, dulces, helados, glaseados y rellenos 

para bizcochos, postres a base de merengue, tartas, 

flanes, sopas y cocteles. 

La parcha también tiene usos medicinales; los curanderos 

puertorriqueños recomiendan comer grandes cantidades 

de parcha para bajar la presión. Actualmente hay un 

resurgimiento de la industria farmacéutica de Europa en el 

uso de la “glycoside passiflorine” en casos cardiacos. La 

pulpa contiene una gran cantidad de vitamina C, caroteno, 

vitamina A, niacina, riboflavina, fósforo y potasio. 

La parcha es fácil de cultivar, sólo requiere pleno sol, y 

un fuerte apoyo de alrededor de 7 pies de alambre para 

poder trepar. Regarla con agua regularmente mantiene la 

enredadera en contínua producción. La propagación se 

realiza normalmente a través de la semilla. 

Natilla o Crema de Parcha 

(1 taza completa – esta receta se multiplica 

maravillosamente) 

Aunque la palabra “natilla” puede parecer un 

poco apetecible (es un antiguo nombre británico 

dado a un postre de frutas cremoso), este 

fragante crema, fácil de preparar en la estufa 

es totalmente delicioso. Úntelo en tostadas, 

bizcochos, galletitas de mantequilla o galletas 

de soda, o simplemente adorne ensalada 

de frutas, bizcocho de ángel, mantecado de 

vainilla, sorbete de frutas o flan de queso y 

limón hecho en casa. Le garantizo que a sus 

invitados a cenar les encantará. 

5 yemas de huevo medianas 

2 cucharaditas de azúcar 

4 cucharaditas de mantequilla sin sal, 

cremosa 

3 oz de pulpa de parcha con semillas 

En una escudilla (no de aluminio) batir las 

yemas y el azúcar hasta que estén bien mezcladas. 

Añada los otros ingredientes. Coloque 

el recipiente sobre una olla de agua hirviendo 

a fuego lento y revuelva constantemente 

hasta que la mezcla espese y se asemeje a la 

salsa holandesa. No debe permitir que hierva, 

ya que se puede cuajar. Colóquela inmediatamente 

en un envase y refrigere. La salsa 

seguirá espesando mientras esté en la nevera. 

Dura alrededor de tres semanas. 

Maracuyá: Aperitivo de 

Parcha Antillano 

El nombre maracuyá, es el nombre coloquial 

francés-caribeño para la fruta de la pasión o 

parcha. Llene una botella vacía de ron entre 

1/3 a ½ de pulpa de parcha. Cocine a fuego 

lento junto con 1 taza de sirope de maíz y 

½ taza de agua, no deje que hierva. Mida 1 

parte del sirope enfriado (refrigere el resto) y 

mézclelo con 4 partes de ron blanco. Añada la 

mezcla a la botella que tiene la pulpa. Tape y 

deje reposar por 6 semanas o más, agitándolo 

diariamente, si es posible. Cuando finalmente 

destape la botella, puede añadir más del 

sirope de azúcar preservado o ron, de acuerdo 

a su gusto. No lo endulce demasiado. Sírvalo 

bien frío.

(makes 1 full cup – this recipe multiplies 

wonderfully!) 

Although the word “curd” may seem a little 

unappetizing (it’s and old British name for 

a particular pudding-like fruit dessert) this 

fragrant, easy-to-make, stove top custard 

is utterly delectable! Spread it on toasted 

bread, grilled poundcake, butter cookies 

or soda crackers or simply top fruit salad, 

angel food cake, vanilla ice cream, fruit 

sorbet or your homemade lemon cheesecake. 

I guarantee your dinner guests will 

swoon! 

5 medium egg yolks 

p + 2 Tsp. sugar 

4 Tsp. (2 oz.) unsalted butter, softened 

3 fluid oz. passionfruit pulp with seeds 

In a heavy (not aluminum) bowl beat 

the yolks and sugar until well blended. 

Stir in other ingredients. Place bowl over 

a saucepan of simmering water and stir 

constantly until mixture is thickened resembling 

a thin hollandaise sauce. It must 

not be allowed to boil or it will curdle. Pour 

immediately into a container and refrigerate. 

It will continue to thicken while resting 

and chilling. It will keep 3 weeks. 

Maracudja; an Antillean 

Passionfruit Aperitif 

The name maracudja is the French- 

Caribbean colloquial name for passionfruit. 

Fill an empty rum bottle 1/3 to ½ full of 

strained passionfruit pulp. Simmer together 

1-cup light corn syrup and a ½-cup 

water, do not let it bubble over! Measure 

out 1 part of the cooled syrup (refrigerate 

the remainder) and combine it with 4 parts 

clear rum. Transfer mixture to bottle with 

pulp. Cap and leave for 6 weeks, or longer, 

if possible, shaking daily. When you finally 

uncap the bottle, you can add more of the 

preserved sugar syrup or rum according 

to your taste. Don’t oversweeten it! Serve 

well chilled.

Pinchomania! 

El pincho es la versión puertorriqueña del “shish kabob”, lo que 

es carne o pescado asado en un palito. Tan común como un “hot 

dog”, viaje a través de toda la isla y encontrará vendedores ubicados 

a lo largo de la carretera asando esta maravilla. Su significado 

en español de espina o punta, la versión española del pincho es un 

pequeño aperitivo (tapa) insertado en un palillo y donde casi siempre 

se le incrusta un pedazo de pan. Se sirve en porciones individuales 

y es una piedra angular de la sociedad en los bares de ciertas 

partes de España. Aquí en el Caribe, un Pincho es generalmente de 

cerdo, tiburón, pollo o carne ensartada en un 

palillo largo de madera, asado a la perfección 

y luego untado con salsa de barbacoa. Coronado 

con un pedazo de pan de agua (versión 

puertorriqueña de pan francés), y se 

sirve simplemente en el palillo 

y cubierto con papel de

Similar to an american “turnover”, these are flour paties stuffed 

with beef, chicken, fish, crab, shrimp, lobster, or conch and then 

deep fried. Perfect pocket of yumminess!

Sorullos de Maíz 

Corn meal fritter stuffed with cheese. Like a corn dog without the 

dog–substitute cheese please!

For the “meat & potatoes” kinda guy. Potatoe ball stuffed with

A savory, crispy, pancake. Made with codfish, tomato sauce and

Slice a ripe plaintain to 1/4 inch slivers, fry in butter or oil for a

The best way to understand the importance 

of art is to watch a child experiment with it... 

On Saturday, Marion Fischer, director and owner of Gallery Galleon and 

artist Louise Guerin offered an art playdate for local children. Vieques artist 

Sandra Reyes arrived along with children to find easels, oil paints,and 

paint brushes all set up and ready to go. Best of all freedom to play. 

Louise encouraged the children to choose their favourite colours and 

get to work. With very little said and a few strokes on my canvas it didn’t 

take much to get them started and then there was no stopping - no lack 

of ideas - and lots of smiles. 

What fun to watch Jeremy (6) figure out that colours when mixed 

together make others. Kelly (8) had no problem painting her name and 

then seeing how many shades of green she could create while Crystal 

(12) seemed lost in her own space creating a sunny Caribbean day. 

Hopefully these days can continue and many more children will get thier 

art playdate.

es al observando a un niño experimentar con el... 

El sábado, Marion Fischer, directora y dueña de la Galería Galeon y la 

artista Louise Guerin, ofrecieron a los niños locales un día para jugar con 

el arte. La artista de Vieques, Sandra Reyes, llegó junto a varios niños 

para encontrar que los caballetes, pinturas de aceite, y pinceles estaban 

listos para usarse. Lo mejor de todo, la libertad para poder jugar. Louise 

animó a los niños a seleccionar sus colores favoritos y comenzar a 

trabajar. 

Con muy poco dicho y unas cuantas pinceladas en mi lienzo, no pasó 

mucho tiempo para que comenzarán y luego no podían detenerse – sin 

falta de ideas – y una gran cantidad de sonrisas. 

Fue divertido observar a Jeremy (6) darse cuenta de que cuando los 

colores son mezclados, salen otros. Kelly (8) no tenía ningún problema 

al pintar su nombre y luego ver cuantos tonos de verde podía crear, 

mientras que Crystal (12) parecía perdida en su propio mundo creando 

un soleado día en el Caribe. Esperamos que estos días puedan continuar 

y que muchos más niños puedan tener su día de juego con el arte.
