La plena viene <strong>de</strong> <strong>Vieques</strong> Plena comes from <strong>Vieques</strong> We can repeat this throughout all towns of Puerto Rico and <strong>Vieques</strong>. <strong>Vieques</strong>, the heart of the Caribbean Arc in its ring of love recalls the words of writer Don Tomás Blanco in his book Praise for Plena*: “he who listens to plena, if his feet don’t move, his butt will shake” Mon Silva, from the dawns of eastern <strong>Vieques</strong> has created plenas that come from the shores of the sea, not from the San Antón barrio of Ponce. Therefore in <strong>Vieques</strong> and in the most remote households and in the quiet quarters of the night you can hear with love and nostalgia the tambourines and the voice of the troubadour of <strong>Vieques</strong> that says: “The plena that I know, is neither from China nor Japan, because that plena comes from <strong>Vieques</strong> and is the plena that Mon sings”. That is the voice of the brave Viequense minstrel Mon Silva, champion of the culture of Isla Nena, an intellectual who in his intense life as a creator has ma<strong>de</strong> a first-rate contribution: his poems Song to Isla Nena (1988), Rhyming with Mon ( 1991), In my beautiful <strong>Vieques</strong> (2005). In addition to two recording projects, “Listen to my Décima” (2000), traditional variety music with master musician Edwin Colón Zayas and his Taller Campesino. This is a small angle from the contribution of the troubadour, poet and writer of fine sensitivity for the Puertorrican and Viequense culture. The most recent work, in his musical universe, Repique <strong>de</strong> Plena en la Isla Nena also with master musician Colón Zayas (2010) established him as one of the examples of popular music and one of the rescuers of Plena, not a flower from a greenhouse but an intense voice of the heart of <strong>Vieques</strong> and Puerto Rico. We must remember that the troubadour Mon Silva, in his customary and magical efforts has presented thirteen Christmas trovas, the first in 1998. Already thirteen of this memorial work! This difficult exercise, between love, poetry and music is carried out by Chelimón Productions, Inc., a nonprofit organization, its Board of Directors and kind volunteers <strong>de</strong>dicated to presenting historical and cultural activities on the island of <strong>Vieques</strong>. *Plena is a narrative song from the coastal regions of Puerto Rico. Its origins have been claimed as far back as 1875 and as late as 1920. As rural farmers moved to San Juan and other cities, they brought plena with them and eventually ad<strong>de</strong>d horns and improvised call and response vocals. Lyrics generally <strong>de</strong>al with stories or current events, though some are light-hearted or humorous. Esto lo po<strong>de</strong>mos repetir por todos los pueblos <strong>de</strong> Puerto Rico y <strong>de</strong> la Isla Nena, <strong>Vieques</strong> el corazón <strong>de</strong>l Arco Caribeño en su repique <strong>de</strong> amor recuerda las palabras <strong>de</strong>l escritor Don Tomás Blanco en su libro Elogio <strong>de</strong> la plena: “el que escucha una plena, si no mueve un pie, mueve una nalga”. Mon Silva, <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> las amanecidas <strong>de</strong>l este <strong>de</strong> la Isla Nena ha creado unas plenas que llegan <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> las orillas <strong>de</strong>l mar; no <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> el San Antón <strong>de</strong> Ponce. Por eso en la Isla Nena y en los más recónditos lugares hogareños y en los tranquilos aposentos <strong>de</strong> la noche se escuchan a cada instante con amor y nostalgia los pan<strong>de</strong>ros y la voz <strong>de</strong>l trovador <strong>de</strong> <strong>Vieques</strong> que dice: “La plena que yo conozco, no es <strong>de</strong> la China ni <strong>de</strong>l Japón, porque la plena viene <strong>de</strong> <strong>Vieques</strong> y es esa plena que canta Mon”. Esa es la brava voz <strong>de</strong>l trovador viequense Mon Silva, adalid <strong>de</strong> la cultura <strong>de</strong> la Isla Nena, intelectual que en su intensa vida <strong>de</strong> creador ha <strong>de</strong>jado una aportación <strong>de</strong> primer or<strong>de</strong>n: sus poemarios Canto a Isla Nena (1988), Rimando con Mon (1991), En mi <strong>Vieques</strong> bello (2005). A<strong>de</strong>más <strong>de</strong> dos proyectos discográficos: “Oye la décima mía” (2000), música típica variada, con el maestro Edwin Colón Zayas y su Taller Campesino. Esto es un pequeño ángulo en la aportación <strong>de</strong>l trovador, poeta y escritor, <strong>de</strong> fina sensibilidad, para la cultura puertorriqueña y viequense. El más reciente trabajo, en su universo musical, Repique <strong>de</strong> plena en Isla Nena, también con el maestro Colón Zayas (2010) lo consagró como uno <strong>de</strong> los ejemplos <strong>de</strong> la música popular y uno <strong>de</strong> los rescatadores <strong>de</strong> la plena, que no es flor <strong>de</strong> inverna<strong>de</strong>ro sino viva voz <strong>de</strong>l corazón <strong>de</strong> <strong>Vieques</strong> y Puerto Rico. Tenemos que recordar que el trovador Mon Silva, en sus consuetudinarios y mágicos esfuerzos ha presentado trece Trovas Navi<strong>de</strong>ñas, la primera <strong>de</strong> ellas en 1998. ¡Ya han transcurrido trece <strong>de</strong> este memorioso trabajo! Este difícil ejercicio, entre el amor, la poesía y la música se lleva a cabo a través <strong>de</strong> Producciones Chelimón, Inc., una organización sin fines <strong>de</strong> lucro, su Junta <strong>de</strong> Directores y gentiles colaboradores <strong>de</strong>dicados a presentar activida<strong>de</strong>s histórico culturales en la Isla <strong>de</strong> <strong>Vieques</strong>. <strong>de</strong>ciembre vieques events 23
