Make sure you hire a licensed operator when you book your trip as there
are several illegal operators around the bay. Licensed operators are specially
trained to be more conscientious and concerned about protecting you
and the bay, insuring it’s preservation for our future generations to come.

are the most informative. Recently, in early November, the Vieques Conservation
and Historical Trust in Esperanza held a workshop where detailed
information was given to those concerned about protecting and preserving
our precious natural treasures. Many local citizens, hotel and villa operators,
as well as, licensed and permitted tour operators were in attendance at this
event focusing on preserving and maintaining our islands natural resources.

VIEQUES – MI GRAN AMOR / Vieques, My Great Love

Recientemente, visité a Puerto Rico
(hacían casi seis meses desde mi última
visita) y no podía esperar a regresar a mi
hogar, Vieques.
La ansiedad de regresar se apoderó de
mí, no porque Vieques tenga las playas
más hermosas (lo cual es obvio), sino
que el estar aquí me ayuda a respirar
PAZ, solo PAZ.
Amo a Vieques y celebro sus virtudes,
las mismas que encontré en noviembre
del 1999. El 1999 estuvo lleno de lucha,
paciencia, y de tratar de sanar las heridas de mucho dolor
y tragedia. Siempre estaré agradecida a Vieques por
MUCHAS cosas. Vieques me salvó, salvó mi alma y sanó
las heridas de mi familia. Es por ésto que moriré con una
sonrisa en este pedazo de terruño.
Los viequenses me aceptaron, una mujer griega/puertorriqueña
de San Juan; sus sonrisas y amor incondicional
hicieron que inmediatamente me enamorara de este lugar.
Con todo mi corazón, estoy agradecida y vamos a
continuar celebrando a Vieques por siempre.
Celebramos la unidad de una comunidad cuando
damos un paseo por el pueblo. Saludamos al Administrador del Correo,
al cajero del Banco, al pescador, los personajes en la esquina de Alicia, los
problemáticos, los líderes políticos, etc.
Los rayos de la salida del sol entran a través de mi balcón y me siento
feliz en mi isla adoptiva. Una vez se pone el sol, yo sólo celebro que llevo
una vida tranquila en este pedazo de tierra, a pesar de que es descuidada
por el Gobierno de Fortuño y de que nuestro sistema de transportación
marítima es un caos.
Quiero finalizar diciendo: LARGA VIDA A VIEQUES, a los viequenses
y a su deseo de sonreír a pesar de...
Recently, I visited Puerto Rico (it was almost six months
since my last visit) and I couldn’t wait to return to my
home, Vieques.
The anxiety to return overtook me, not because Vieques
has the most beautiful beaches (which is obvious), but being
here helps me to breath PEACE, only PEACE.
I would love Vieques to celebrate its virtues, the same
ones I encountered in November of 1999. The 1999 full of
struggle, patience and trying to heal the wounds of much
pain and tragedy. I will always be grateful to Vieques for so
MANY things. Vieques saved me, saved
my soul and healed my own family’s
wounds. That is why I will die here in
this piece of land with a smile.
Viequenses accepted me, a Greek/Puerto
Rican woman from San Juan, and their
smiles and unconditional love made me
fall in love with this place immediately.
With all my heart, I am grateful and let
us continue to celebrate Vieques forever.
Let’s celebrate that we do not have traffic
jams or traffic lights, only stop signs.
Celebrate the unity of a community when we take a walk through
town. We say hello to the postmaster, the teller at the Bank, the fishermen,
the personalities in the corner of Alicia’s, the troublemakers, the
political leaders, etc.
The sunrise peaks thru my balcony and I feel happy in my adopted
island. Once the sun is up, I only celebrate that I lead a tranquil life
in this piece of land even though it is neglected by the Government of
Fortuño and our maritime transportation system is dire.
I only want to finish stating that: LONG LIVE VIEQUES, the
Viequenses and their desire to smile even though...
