Visiting Vieques’ Bioluminescent Bay Visita a la Bahía Bioluminiscente de Vieques
One of Vieques’ highlights is its bioluminescent bay, often
cited as the brightest in the world. If there is something
you must do during your vacation in Isla de Vieques, it is
a night time visit Puerto Mosquito’s Bio-Bay. The night sky,
literally filled with stars, adds to the bioluminescent experience.
Before booking your trip, please take note of some
important background information.
Una de las principales atracciones de Vieques es su bahía
bioluminiscente, citada a menudo como la más brillante
del mundo. Si hay algo que usted deba hacer durante
sus vacaciones en la Isla de Vieques, es visitar durante la
noche la bahía bioluminiscente Puerto Mosquito. El cielo
nocturno, literalmente repleto de estrellas, se suma a la experiencia
bioluminiscente. Antes de reservar su viaje, por
favor, tome nota de algunos detalles importantes.
Puerto Mosquito Bay is one of the most magnificent examples
of the world’s few remaining bioluminescent bays. The Biobay
experience is a must see natural phenomenon where the
water glows when the dinoflagellate microorganisms in it are
agitated. Our Bio-bay is the best bioluminescent bay in all the
Caribbean and most likely, the brightest the world has ever seen. It is representative
of what a bioluminescent bay should look like when it’s healthy.
The bay actually glows, giving off a greenish-white neon-like light when the
waters are disturbed.
A progress report was done back in 2004, by Roy Armstrong, from the
Marine Sciences Department for the Puerto Mosquito Watershed, Vieques,
PR. In this report it is stated “Bioluminescence (the emission of light by
living organisms) in Puerto Mosquito is caused almost exclusively by
microscopic phytoplankton called dinoflagellates. This splendor of light may
be in peril due to the unsustainable human activities in the surrounding
uplands and along the shoreline of this shallow marine environment. With
the increased tourist activities and the current development practices within
the surrounding area, bioluminescence in this bay may be at risk in the near
future resulting from excessive erosion and deposition of sediments and
contaminants.”
We’ve already seen what carelessness and contamination can do to
another one of our bioluminescent bays in La Parguera. Unfortunately, the
bio bay there now has the least amount of bioluminescence out of the three
here in Puerto Rico and this is due to excessive human activity and pollution
from diesel boat fuel and other chemicals, it’s been said the bay hardly glows
anymore. It is important to note that the current laws forbid a licensed
operator from letting a tourist enter the bio-bay waters here in Vieques, this
is for the protection of the bay from pesticides, sun block agents and other
chemicals tourists use on their skin that can be dangerous to the existence

las pocas bahías bioluminiscentes que quedan en el mundo. La experiencia
de la bahía es un fenómeno natural donde el agua se ilumina
cuando los microorganismos dinoflagelados en ella son agitados.
Nuestra bahía es la mejor bahía bioluminiscente en todo el Caribe y
lo más probable, la más brillante que el mundo haya visto. Es representativa de
cómo debe lucir una bahía bioluminiscente saludable. Actualmente, cuando las
aguas son agitadas, la bahía brilla con un color blanco verdoso, parecido a la luz
de neón.
Un informe de progreso fue realizado en el 2004 por Roy Armstrong, del
Departamento de Ciencias Marinas para la Cuenca de Puerto Mosquito, Vieques,
PR. En este informe se establece que la “Bioluminiscencia (la emisión de luz por
organismos vivos) en Puerto Mosquito es causada casi exclusivamente por el fitoplancton
microscópico conocido como dinoflagelado. Este esplendor de luz puede
estar en peligro debido a las actividades humanas no sostenibles en los terrenos
circundantes y a lo largo de la costa de este poco profundo ambiente marino. Con
el aumento de las actividades turísticas y las prácticas actuales de desarrollo
dentro de los alrededores, la bioluminiscencia de esta bahía pudiera estar en
riesgo en un futuro cercano, como resultado de la erosión excesiva y la deposición
de sedimentos y contaminantes.
Ya hemos visto lo que el descuido y la contaminación han hecho a otra de
nuestras bahías bioluminiscentes en La Parguera. Por desgracia, esta bahía tiene
la menor cantidad de bioluminiscencia de las tres que hay en Puerto Rico debido
al exceso de actividad humana y la contaminación de los botes de diesel y otros
químicos; se dice que la bahía ya no brilla más. Es importante señalar que la
legislación vigente prohíbe a un operador con licencia dejar entrar a un turista
en las aguas de la bahía en Vieques, ésto para proteger a la bahía de pesticidas,
agentes bloqueadores solares y otros químicos que los turistas utilizan en su piel
y que pueden ser peligrosos para la existencia de los dinoflagelados en esta bahía.
Puerto Mosquito también es un vivero caribeño para muchas de las criaturas
que habitan nuestro océano, incluyendo tiburones, tortugas marinas y aves
