ONE MAN’S IDEA CHANGED OUR COMMUNITY FOREVER. Edwin Coupland Shaw’s In 1955, one man’s idea changed our community forever. A bequest in industrialist Edwin Coupland Shaw’s will established what we know today as Akron Community Foundation. It provided a means for local residents to make charitable gifts that would grow in perpetuity and provide for the community’s changing needs. Today, the foundation’s assets have grown to nearly $ 117 million and more than $ 50 million has been reinvested in the community through grants to area nonprofit organizations. The generous gifts of thousands of other Summit County residents help Akron Community Foundation carry forward his legacy, improving the quality of life in the Greater Akron area.
Shaw was a philanthropist in On June 8, 1955, George Oenslager and Frank Van Cleef, co-executors of the estate of late B.F. Goodrich executive Edwin Shaw, hosted seven men — Goodrich Chairman John L. Collyer, National Rubber Machinery President Paul A. Frank, Goodyear Chairman P.W. Litchfield, General Tire & Rubber President William O’Neill, department store magnate Bert A. Polsky, well-known Akron attorney Lisle M. Buckingham and W.B. “Bish” McIntosh, executive director of the C.W. Seiberling Memorial Foundation — around the dining room table of Shaw’s home. Together they made local history. Although he had died 14 years before, Shaw’s spirit was as alive as ever that evening. In 1934 when writing his will, he had expressed his desire to create a way for residents to make charitable gifts with a flexibility of purpose “to meet the changes in the community needs wrought by the passage of time and the variance in circumstances.” It was the reason those men gathered 50 years ago. Today, we know it as Akron Community Foundation. HE WAS AHEAD OF HIS TIME Shaw was a philanthropist in the truest sense of the word. He became so widely known for his work in health and welfare that Akronites sometimes forgot he was an outstanding engineer who had a great hand in the mechanical and engineering development of the rubber industry. He worked for B.F. Goodrich Co. for many years and worked his way through the ranks to serve as vice president of factory operations.
