ONE MAN’S IDEA
CHANGED OUR COMMUNITY FOREVER.
Edwin Coupland Shaw’s
In 1955, one man’s idea changed our community forever.
A bequest in industrialist Edwin Coupland Shaw’s will established what
we know today as Akron Community Foundation. It provided a means
for local residents to make charitable gifts that would grow in
perpetuity and provide for the community’s changing needs.
Today, the foundation’s assets have grown to nearly $ 117 million and more
than $ 50 million has been reinvested in the community through grants
to area nonprofit organizations. The generous gifts of thousands of
other Summit County residents help Akron Community Foundation carry
forward his legacy, improving the quality of life in the Greater Akron area.
