John M. Schultz, CCM General Manager Dear Members: Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s almost time for you to hit the courts – renovation of the Tennis Center is very close to being complete. Construction has gone better than expected, and we’re about to enter an exciting new era in Carmel Tennis. First I’d like to welcome our new Tennis Director, Katie Carpenter, who is joining us on January 9. In preparation for her start, Katie has been involved at Carmel the past few months becoming familiar with facilities, staff, committee members and many members. One of Katie’s first responsibilities will be to recruit for two other tennis positions – Head Pro and Assistant Pro. They will support Katie in leading our teaching programs, juniors programs, clinics and all activities. We will continue to keep you apprised of our efforts on this front. In other exciting news - construction of the new Tennis Center is scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of February. Further, we’re incredibly pleased to report that the project is currently below budget. One note on the completion date – depending on weather conditions in February, the top coating and color on the hard courts may require to be fully completed in March or April, as applying these finishing layers requires temperatures above certain daily averages. We will update you on our progress. Regarding the design of the new facility, an important component the Tennis Center designer focused on was taking advantage of our previously under-utilized lower level, building an integrated tennis complex that is as comprehensive and service-friendly as the one recently created for golf. The lower level court access takes advantage of the proximity to locker rooms, shaded areas and fans, and offers an excellent view of the courts. It is a wonderful extension of the new courts and courtside amenities, and will provide excellent access to the playing area. With this new addition, we want to encourage all members and guests to arrive for play by entering through the Tennis Pro Shop. This will allow our tennis staff to greet and sign you in, share tennis-related news and - in general - provide the concierge-type service similar to that which is currently in place for golf. As we take Carmel’s Tennis Program to the next level, we want to ensure that the experiences of you and your guests are first-rate and we feel this new integrated approach will facilitate doing just that. Page 11 Carmeline Given this, we’re thrilled to report that the design is shaping up to be even better than the pictures and descriptions depicted during the planning phase. All courtside furnishings are on order and will aesthetically match the décor and furniture found at the pool and on the golf courses. We’re also taking this opportunity to freshen the existing tennis interior areas, such as the locker rooms and the shop. We’d also like to remind all members about the convenient and efficient online reservation system. As you know, it provides a multitude of functions, including court sign-up and the ability to see who else might be playing, registering for lessons, and learning about club events and additional happenings with our Tennis Program. So please take advantage of this resource on the club website and via the newly-released mobile browser which will also provide you with full access to our online system. Carmel’s Tennis Committee deserves much appreciation for their guidance during this process; special thanks to David Smith and Jody Cook, who spent countless hours researching standards and reviewing specifications to insure that our new facility exceeded the expectations of our tennis playing membership. We hope – with the hiring of the new Tennis Director and the incredible updates to the tennis facilities, we’ll continue Carmel’s tradition of both excellence and innovation, as we seek to elevate our already exceptional tennis program. GM Message In closing, I’d like to note that Katie and the tennis staff are in the process of preparing a great calendar of events to unveil at the start of tennis season, which will officially begin with a Grand Opening party in March, so watch for details. Tennis has always been a wonderful opportunity to “bring members and families together” at Carmel, to quote Committee Chairman Rick Menze. We expect our renovated facility and elevated programming to help expand your opportunities to enjoy playing and socializing around tennis. We’re looking forward to getting everyone back on the courts at Carmel this spring and hope you will all be part of this exciting new time for the Carmel Tennis Program. John Schultz
Page 12 Carmeline A new Tennis Center and a new Tennis Director make for an exciting time at Carmel. Katie Carpenter will be joining us as our Tennis Director on Monday, January 9th, 2012. Katie comes to us with twenty plus years of tennis experience from a platinum club, North Ridge, in Raleigh, North Carolina. As the Head Tennis Professional there she was responsible for all aspects of the program. This includes all adult activities, 29 men’s and women’s teams, organization of all ladies and men’s team practices, adult mixers and socials, as well as planning and execution of all inner club tournaments. In addition, Katie has been a college tennis coach and is experienced at teaching all levels of tennis. As a player she was a scholar athlete at NCSU and was the head coach of Peace College’s women’s team. Katie’s view of tennis is as follows: “I truly believe that tennis is a sport of a lifetime. It allows people of all ages and all abilities to come together to play and have a great time. Tennis also mimics life. While teaching life lessons in a controlled environment any hour can be your finest.” Please join us in welcoming Katie to Carmel and stop by the Pro Shop to introduce yourself and spend a few minutes with her.
