Spotlight on Board Members
Ray Cliburn
Service has been a
life-long, motivating
drive for Ray Cliburn, a
member of the South
Florida Baptist Hospital
Board of Trustees since
1993 and the
Foundation board since its beginning in 1995.
Cliburn retired from the Hillsborough County
School System in 1990 and started an active
retirement that moved from helping young people
in the schools to serving the community through
local civic groups.
In addition to his support of South Florida
Baptist Hospital, Cliburn is a member of the
Civitan Club and Gideons International, best
known for distributing bibles to the community
through hotels, nursing homes, jails and other
organizations.
A 1950 graduate of Turkey Creek High
School, Cliburn and his wife Hillie have three
daughters and four grandchildren. Hillie is a
hospital volunteer and member of the Auxiliary.
Although Cliburn studied physical education,
recreation and health in college, his first job was
teaching ninth grade English. Before long, he
moved into the emerging field of student guidance
and earned a master’s degree at the University of
Florida in counseling. He helped Hillsborough
County schools implement a federal program to
train school guidance counselors and later
supervised all of the school guidance programs in
the county.
In 1993, when Cliburn was asked to become
involved with South Florida Baptist Hospital, he
says he didn’t hesitate. “My family and I have used
the hospital all these years, and I thought here’s my
chance to pay them back a little,” said Cliburn.
“The hospital is moving in the right direction. It is
a valuable resource that we want to remain in our
community.”
Dub McGinnes
“South Florida Baptist has been an integral
part of our lives since my dad (W.D. McGinnes,
Sr.) helped established the hospital back in the
early ‘50s,” said Dub McGinnes.
Like his dad, McGinnes is a member of
various hospital boards, including the Board of
Trustees, the Foundation Board of Directors and
from 1987-1997, the hospital’s Board of Directors.
McGinnes now represents South Florida Baptist
Hospital on the St. Joseph’s-Baptist Health Care
Board and the BayCare Health System Board of
Directors. South Florida Baptist joined BayCare in
1997.
“I have had intimate knowledge of the
hospital since I was six years old,” joked McGinnes.
“When I was six years old, I was one of the first
patients in the ‘new’ hospital.”
McGinnes attributes South Florida Baptist’s
success to the dedicated team of employees and to
the economies of scale that BayCare Health System
brings to the hospital.
“The difference at our hospital is the people,”
he said. “There is a charm, a small town
atmosphere and a strong sense of caring that is
prevalent. We have a great blend of wonderful
people and state-of-the-art facilities.”
When he’s not busy with the hospital,
McGinnes is a market manager for Stock Building
Supply, the company the family sold the McGinnes
Lumber Company to three years ago. He is also on
the board of directors for the Sunshine State Bank.
With his wife Pec, he is active with First Baptist
Church of Plant City, where the two currently
teach bible studies. Pec also serves on the hospital
Foundation’s Fall Fancy committee and has been a
member of the Diamonds & Denim volunteer
committee since its inception in 1997.

Where Kids Come First
When two-year-old Cody lost his
voice, his mother, Lori Smith of
Mulberry, wasn’t too concerned. But
a few days later, after a visit to the
pediatrician, the toddler still wasn’t
getting any better. By Friday night
he was having difficulty breathing.
The following evening, mother
and son made a late night trip to the
South Florida Baptist Hospital
emergency department – and didn’t
return home until Monday morning.
Cody was admitted to the hospital’s
pediatric unit where nurses treated
his respiratory illness and made his
mother as comfortable as possible.
“I had come totally unprepared,
but of course, stayed with Cody the
whole time,” said Mrs. Smith. “The
nurses were so nice about everything.
They gave me a toothbrush, extra
socks and a patient gown. They went
out of their way to get me anything I
needed. And they were very gentle
with Cody.”
“It takes a very special person to
be a pediatric nurse,” says Donna
Washburn, R.N., manager of
pediatrics and the hospital’s skilled
nursing facility. “Pediatric nurses
have to be compassionate and
patient, and love children. We are
very fortunate to have such a
dedicated staff and to offer this
service to the community.”
Children ranging in age from
infancy through the teen years are
cared for the 14-bed pediatric unit.
Two years ago, Washburn’s son,
Zachariah Zorn, now 18, was

admitted for ongoing treatment of
Chron’s Disease.
Now in remission and starting
college next semester, Zorn said he
enjoyed the small home-like personal
environment compared with the
many larger “big city” hospitals he
had experienced.
Funding for many of the children’s
services comes from the annual
Lights of Love holiday tree lighting
program and from community
donations. Proceeds from the last
few years have contributed to stateof-the-art
pediatric resuscitative
equipment and to the child life
program, which provides important
therapeutic “play” to help children
cope with hospitalization and illness.

Fall Fancy To Take Place November 15th

Fancy, to be held Saturday,

Once again, physician’s wives and women physicians will be the
star of the show as they model fashions from local boutiques. Nine
Team Member Campaign Surpasses Goal
The seventh annual Foundation team member campaign
broke all records this year. Hospital team members rallied
around the theme, “Together We Touch Lives Forever,” and
contributed nearly $31,000, exceeding the goal by $6,000.
Sixty-one percent of team members participated, a 12
percent increase over last year. Seventeen hospital
Holiday Tree Lighting December 4th
The fifth annual “Lights of Love” will take place on
Thursday, Dec. 4 at McCall Park in downtown Plant City.
Tree lighting begins at 6:45 p.m., but come at 5:30 p.m. for
photos with Santa hosted by Tampa Electric Company.
Santa photos are $5. In addition to the tree lighting, a short
holiday music program is included in the festivities. Bill
Dodson, Mayor of Plant City, will emcee the event.
“Lights of Love” is co-hosted by the South Florida Baptist
Hospital Foundation and the City of Plant City. Publix
Super Markets Charities is this year’s major sponsor. The
“boutique-style” vendors will set up merchandise and South Florida
Baptist Hospital will provide the catering.
“The home tour is always an appealing part of this event and
attendees will enjoy the elegant décor of the Jimenez home, which is
done in a hunting lodge/western style,” said Hardee. “This is a fun
event and a wonderful time of year. With the seasonal change, people
are now looking forward to putting on fall clothes.”
