MUSIC Music is a motivator! It can add smiles, laughter and energy to a session. It turns frowns upside down, sends sorrow away and sets the mood for a great learning environment. In addition to these great reasons, the use of music during a <strong>CanSkate</strong> session can also: • Help skaters develop rhythm and coordination • Keep the session organized Rhythm & Coordination Some skaters have natural rhythm and timing, while others need to develop it. Clapping, stepping, skating, jumping, stopping and dancing to music generally help skaters develop important skills in other critical and fundamental aspects of our sport such as: • Hitting accents in music for choreography • Recognizing the beats and staying on time for dances or skills • Encouraging freedom of movement and expression Organization Your <strong>CanSkate</strong> session will run itself once it is set to music. Lessons will be pre-timed ensuring equal attention to all groups. Warm-up, group activity and cool down will all be pre-determined and recorded in the appropriate order and placement to allow the session to flow effortlessly. Use an auditory signal to let all participants and parents know that the session is changing. Sample 45 minute session: Part 1 – Warm-Up: 2-5 upbeat action-type songs = 10 minutes Auditory signal or sound effect Part 2 – Lesson Time: 15 minutes of music followed by the auditory signal then another 15 minutes of music to allow for two lessons of 15 minutes each = 30 minutes Auditory signal or sound effect Part 3 – Group Activity: 1-2 upbeat action songs = 3 minutes Part 4 – Cool Down: 1 slower song = 2 minutes 4
TEACHING AIDS AND PROPS The difference between teaching a lesson with teaching aids and teaching a lesson without them is much like the difference between a young child reading a book with pictures and one without them. Adding visual aids to your lessons will stimulate the skaters’ learning ability. Colourful teaching aids will also add fun and variety to your lessons. Here are some ideas on how to add visual aids to increase fun and learning: Please refer to Appendix A “Leona’s List of Teaching Aids” for more tips and ideas. 5
