4-cyc sprint tri-city kart club horn rapids kart track riChland, washington june 30 - july 3 • 2010 article by joel willits photos by matt dillon • racin’ pics & chris poynor new ikf eXperts: alan Cathey tim lawrence tristan orear Mike schorn richland, washington was the site of the 2010 international kart federation 4-cycle sprint grand nationals, an event that featured 18 classes battling it out for the coveted duffy awards. the tri-city kart club hosted the event and made several improvements to the track in recent years in preparation. the club repaved the track, added electricity and running water in the paved pit area, added a new restroom with showers in the pit, revamped all the fencing around the facility as well as added soft wall barriers that surround a large portion of the course and even installed a new public announcement system. free grandstands attracted plenty of spectators during the event, especially during the three days of official racing. the weekend featured a bit of everything: lots of sunshine, a little rain, good food and even better racing. vintage karts, provided by the vintage kart club of america, entertained the crowd, as did richard kennedy's famous "this side up" exhibition. the racing was fast and furious and four drivers won multiple titles - including alan cathey of boise, idaho, who led all racers with three duffy's during the weekend. Day One Junior 1 Briggs Gas Animal Light sting ray robb of boise, idaho stole the show in the event's first race, beating out local product tyler brown of kennewick in the Junior gas 1 animal light to take home the duffy. davey Manthei Jr. of nearby pasco, wash., showed a spark of things to come 18 KARTER NEWS - NovEmbER 2010
y finishing third in the race, while another local driver, Brittany Zamora of Kennewick, Wash., finished fourth. Sr IKF Briggs World Formula Lt Alan Cathey of Boise, Idaho earned expert status by picking up his first Duffy of the weekend in a family affair. Cathey battled his future brother-in-law Brett Lucas of West Richland for most of the race before finally pulling away to win. Lucas finished third after a failed move to take first, allowing his soon to be uncle in-law, Burt Gasaway of Green Acres, Wash., to pass and take second. Tristan Orear of Yucaipa, Calif., rounded out the top four. Briggs Animal Heavy Brothers Tim and Terry Lawrence battled each other for the Briggs Animal Heavy title, with the elder brother, Tim, of Nampa, Idaho, edging out his little brother for the Duffy. Terry would finished second while Robert Towne of Red Bluff, Calif., took third. Alan Cathey took fourth and Brett Lucas finished fifth. Jr II IKF Briggs World Formula Lt West Richland, Wash., native Artie Carpenter earned a hero's welcome back to the scales after capturing a Duffy in Junior II IKF Briggs World Formula Lt. Carpenter's friends and family showered him with water following the win by the driver from the Tri-City Kart Club. Second place finisher Colton Schultz of Spokane, Wash., made a late charge but couldn't overtake Carpenter. Myles Pederson of Meridan, Idaho took third while Payton Manthei of West Richland, Wash., finish fourth. Haley Groff of Richland, Wash., rounded out the top five. F200 Brody Roa of Buena Park, Calif., had to regain the early lead he lost to local product Joe Miller of Richland in order to capture the Duffy. Miller passed Roa late in the race on Turn 1, but Roa was able to rebound right away and pass Miller on Turn 2 and made the lead stand up in the win. Miller finished second while Tristen Orear took third. Cory Gwin of Rio Linda, Calif., took fourth and Matt Jones of Buena Park rounded out the top five. Briggs World Formula Masters Chris Hatch and Mike Schorn battled it out for the Briggs World Formula Masters' Duffy until the final laps, when Hatch was able to regain his lost lead and take the title. Hatch, of Dallas, Ore., and the rest of the field was able to catch a break when pole winner and early leader Gabriel Kajdy of Calgary, Alberta bent an axle and had to leave the race after less than a lap. Schorn, of Banks, Ore., finished second while Bryan Green of Portland took third. Luke Pascoe of Calgary finished fourth and fellow Canadian Scott Barlee of Surrey, British Columbia finished fifth. Day Two Day Two of the 4-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals featured a little rain mixed in with a whole lot of suspense, as well as a fantastic day at the track for Tristen Orear. IKF Briggs World Formula Medium Brett Lucas won the pole for the IKF Briggs World Formula Medium with a wire-to-wire dominant victory in the heat race, but Tristen Orear won his first Duffy with a tremendous performance in the final. Orear, a 15-year-old who waivered up into seniors, had previously won seven Screaming Eagle awards but hadn't picked up his first elusive Duffy. Before the final, the tall Californian said he'd gladly trade all of the Eagles in for just one Duffy. Orear passed Lucas in the sixth lap of the final and held off Tim Lawrence for the duration to capture the trophy. Terry Lawrence finished in third, while Lucas wound up in fourth. Roger Cathey, a seven-time Duffy winner, rounded out he podium by finishing fifth. Junior II Briggs Gas Animal Hailey Groff won the pole for the Junior 2 Gas Animal but had to endure a rough ride on the way to capturing her first Duffy. Colton Schultz jumped out to an early lead but Groff was able to retake the lead in the sixth lap at Turn 3. Schultz quickly attempted to re-pass Groff, but instead found the front end of his kart lifted up in the air - on Groff's shoulder. Groff shook off the collision and kept her lead the duration of the race for her first national title. Myles Pederson was able to pass Schultz late to finish second. Schultz took third while London Amlin of Cottonwood, Calif., finished fourth. Payton Manthei finished fifth to complete the podium. Masters A large crash during the heat race allowed Richland's Michael Groff to cruise to the pole position but he wouldn't be so lucky during the 17-lap final, which saw multiple karts take the lead.
