Math Placement<br />
• ALGEBRA DIAGNOSTIC TEST (ADT)<br />
For: Every student intending to enroll in<br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics 3A, 15, or 34A must take <strong>the</strong><br />
Algebra Diagnostic Test (ADT). A minimum<br />
score <strong>of</strong> 32 is required for enrollment in<br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics 3A. A minimum score <strong>of</strong> 22 is<br />
required for Ma<strong>the</strong>matics 15. A minimum score<br />
<strong>of</strong> 6 is required for Ma<strong>the</strong>matics 34A.<br />
Times: The ADT will be <strong>of</strong>fered at <strong>the</strong> following<br />
times and locations in Girvetz 1004:<br />
Wednesday, October 29, 2003, 7 p.m.<br />
Monday, November 3, 2003, 7 p.m.<br />
Wednesday, November 12, 2003, 7 p.m.<br />
Monday, November 24, 2003, 7 p.m.<br />

This examination covers those parts <strong>of</strong> algebra<br />
and trigonometry most used in calculus.<br />
Students must bring a #2 pencil and <strong>the</strong>ir perm<br />
number in order to take this test. The results will<br />
be available <strong>the</strong> next day. These results will be<br />
posted outside <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />
South Hall 6607. Any student with questions<br />
about <strong>the</strong> test results or about ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />
courses in general is encouraged to consult a<br />
ma<strong>the</strong>matics advisor in South Hall 6607.<br />
Results on <strong>the</strong> Algebra Diagnostic Test are<br />
substantially improved by reviewing algebra and<br />
trigonometry prior to taking <strong>the</strong> exam. A copy <strong>of</strong><br />
Precalculus Review Topics may be purchased at<br />
<strong>the</strong> UCSB Bookstore.<br />
A student who has obtained a score <strong>of</strong> 2 on<br />
<strong>the</strong> College Board Advanced Placement<br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics AB or BC examinations may<br />
register in Ma<strong>the</strong>matics 3A or 34A without<br />
taking <strong>the</strong> ADT. Those obtaining a grade <strong>of</strong> 3, 4,<br />
or 5 should follow <strong>the</strong> suggestions under <strong>the</strong><br />
Advanced Placement, College Board section <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> UCSB General Catalog.<br />

• MUSIC THEORY/MUSICIANSHIP PLACEMENT TESTS<br />
Incoming music majors, whe<strong>the</strong>r freshmen or<br />
transfers from o<strong>the</strong>r institutions or UCSB<br />
departments, must take <strong>the</strong> departmental exam<br />
for placement in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory program.<br />
• PLACEMENT AUDITIONS<br />
Placement auditions are given in piano, voice,<br />
and instruments for all students who wish to<br />
study privately. Please bring your instrument and<br />
music; <strong>the</strong> department will furnish an accompanist.<br />

and to sign up for a specific time and location.<br />
• CLASS PIANO PLACEMENT AUDITION<br />
All incoming music majors who are not piano<br />
majors must take an audition for placement in<br />
<strong>the</strong> class piano sequence. Please contact <strong>the</strong><br />
music department for fur<strong>the</strong>r details, and to sign<br />
up for a specific time.<br />
All non-majors wishing to enroll in a basic<br />
piano class are also required to take <strong>the</strong><br />

Academic Advising and Orientation for<br />
all New Undergraduate Students<br />
New students admitted for winter quarter 2004<br />
will receive information in <strong>the</strong> mail about<br />
academic advising and orientation available on<br />
<strong>the</strong> UCSB campus on November 21, 2003.<br />
Students who sign up for this session will receive<br />
general information about <strong>the</strong> campus, pick up<br />
important resources, meet with an advisor from<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir major department, and learn about<br />
important graduation requirements from<br />
advisors in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Letters and Science. A<br />
special orientation for parents <strong>of</strong> new students<br />
will be <strong>of</strong>fered in addition to student advising on<br />
November 21, 2003.<br />

published in this Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes. If you are<br />
unable to visit campus for advising prior to<br />
registration, please contact your academic<br />
department directly for academic advising<br />
before you select courses for your first quarter at<br />
UCSB.<br />

Academic advising is available to new and<br />
returning students from each major department.<br />
New students are especially encouraged to visit<br />

requirements, departmental procedures and<br />
advising systems, and assistance with assessing<br />
progress toward completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major. New<br />
students must also consult <strong>the</strong> department to<br />
determine <strong>the</strong>ir status in fulfilling prerequisites.<br />
They should bring copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir records from<br />
previous schools to this consultation. Contact<br />
each department individually for an appointment<br />
or for <strong>the</strong> date, time, and location <strong>of</strong> a<br />
