UCSB Resource Center for Sexual &<br />

Gender Diversity (RCSGD)<br />

The Resource Center for Sexual & Gender<br />

Diversity at UCSB is designed to be a safe and<br />

supportive environment for all students, staff,<br />

and faculty, emphasizing resources for <strong>the</strong><br />

lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer,<br />

intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) community, as well<br />

as those who are questioning <strong>the</strong>ir sexual and/<br />

or gender identity. The RCSGD welcomes a<br />

diversity <strong>of</strong> racial, ethnic, religious, political, and<br />

cultural values while advocating for <strong>the</strong> welfare<br />

<strong>of</strong> those who have historically been marginalized<br />

because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sexual and/or gender identity.<br />

Gender Diversity staff are committed to serving<br />

<strong>the</strong> campus and larger community with<br />

Winter quarter textbook refunds are issued<br />

January 5 through January 16 between 9 a.m<br />

and 4 p.m. outside <strong>the</strong> store, and before 9 a.m.<br />

and after 4 p.m. inside <strong>the</strong> store at <strong>the</strong> customer<br />

service counter. All sales are final on January 16.<br />

Special orders on textbooks are taken beginning<br />

January 12. Unsold textbooks will be<br />

returned to publishers beginning February 2.<br />

<strong>University</strong> Police<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong> Santa Barbara Police<br />

is committed to fulfilling its mission to provide a<br />

safe, peaceful, and secure environment <strong>of</strong><br />

persons and facilities on <strong>the</strong> campus. A<br />

community oriented Police Department<br />

accomplishes <strong>the</strong>se goals through education<br />

and enforcement.<br />

This pro-active department employs 26 sworn<br />

full-time <strong>of</strong>ficers. The UC Police <strong>Office</strong>rs, who<br />

have statewide jurisdiction, maintain 24 hour<br />

uniformed patrol on foot, bicycle, and motor<br />

vehicles. <strong>Office</strong>rs engage in crime prevention,<br />

handling calls for service, investigating crimes,<br />

and taking appropriate action. Paramedics and<br />

emergency medical technicians provide lifesupport<br />

and paramedics are dispatched through <strong>the</strong><br />

Communications Unit located in <strong>the</strong> Public<br />

Safety Building. Communications also handles<br />

all campus 911 calls.<br />

Assisting <strong>the</strong> Police Department is <strong>the</strong><br />

Community Service Organization which employs<br />

50 students. The students act as <strong>the</strong> eyes and<br />

ears for <strong>the</strong> Police Department. They also<br />

register bikes, collect lost and found, and<br />

provide escorts for students.<br />

The Police Department works with <strong>the</strong><br />

Women’s Center Rape Prevention Education<br />

Program. Due to <strong>the</strong> Police Department’s<br />

innovative and pro-active stance, <strong>the</strong> 1994 report<br />

from Crime at College lists UC Santa Barbara as<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> safest university campuses.<br />

Visitor Center<br />

The Visitor Center is located on <strong>the</strong> ground floor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student Affairs Administrative Services<br />

Building (SAASB), Room 1102A. A component <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Outreach Services,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Visitor Center <strong>of</strong>fers one-hour Freshman<br />

Admissions presentations on weekdays at 11<br />

a.m., and hour-long walking tours at 12 noon<br />

and 2 p.m., excluding holidays. Saturday<br />

Admission presentations at 11 a.m. and<br />

Saturday tours at noon are only <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />

October and April. Transfer Advising sessions<br />

are held each Thursday and Friday at 1 p.m.,<br />

excluding holidays.<br />

Women’s Center<br />

The Women’s Center works towards retaining<br />

students, staff, and faculty and empowering<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to be successful within <strong>the</strong> academy and<br />

beyond. We strive for an inclusive and equitable<br />

campus community through advocacy, education,<br />

and support services. The Center promotes<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> role and impact <strong>of</strong><br />

gender in our lives and our society. The Center<br />

challenges sexism, racism, heterosexism,<br />

ageism, abelism, classism, and o<strong>the</strong>r barriers<br />

that inhibit full inclusion and equal power in<br />

society in order to help people <strong>of</strong> diverse<br />

backgrounds achieve <strong>the</strong>ir intellectual,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional, and personal goals and realize<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir full potential. Through our programs, we<br />

work to support lesbian, gay, bisexual,<br />

transgender, questioning, and ally students,<br />

staff, and faculty and promote a supporting and<br />

accepting climate regardless <strong>of</strong> sexual orientation<br />

or gender identity.<br />

Services <strong>the</strong> center provides include: rape and<br />

sexual harassment prevention education, crisis<br />

counseling and advocacy for anyone affected by<br />

sexual violence, an art gallery, research library,<br />

lectures, films, workshops, support groups,<br />

services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender<br />

students, and a re-entry/non-traditional student<br />

lounge. A quarterly calendar <strong>of</strong> activities is<br />

available.<br />

The Women’s Center welcomes both women<br />

and men, students, faculty, staff, and community<br />

members.<br />

belief that a well-informed community is better<br />

served and safer. UC Santa Barbara makes<br />
