E 24 Egg shells See also Home compost REUSE Put crushed egg shells around the base of flowers and plants in order to deter slugs and snails. Please do not put egg shells in your green bin. Electrical & electronic equipment REDUCE Many electrical and electronic items can be repaired. Visit Sort-It or look up Yellow Pages for local repair shops. REUSE Furniture projects, some charity shops and Starter Packs Angus will accept items in good working order. See p.45 for details. RECYCLE Items which cannot be reused can be recycled via the Electrical and Electronic Equipment points at the Recycling Centres. WEEE LEGISLATION The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, which came into force in 2007, require all producers, retailers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment to comply with certain obligations. These include providing information for consumers about the environmental impact of WEEE, and how consumers can safely dispose of WEEE for proper treatment and recycling. WEEE is the fastest growing waste stream in the UK. The aim of the regulations is to address the environmental impacts of electrical and electronic equipment when it reaches the end of its life, and to encourage the proper treatment and recycling of WEEE. Read more at www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/ sectors/sustainability Energy Consider reducing your energy consumption in order to save money and reduce carbon emissions. There are many simple energy saving measures you can take, including: ● Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. ● Make sure your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. ● Use energy efficient light bulbs which use less energy and last up to ten times longer than standard bulbs. ● Turn off household appliances such as microwaves, TVs, videos, music systems, and computers when not in use, as they continue to use energy when they are left on standby. ● Don't leave the fridge door open and try to avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge as this increases the energy required to keep the contents cold. ● Use a low temperature setting on the washing machine and only wash full loads or use a half-load or economy program.
E-F ● ● ● ● ● ● In summer, dry your clothes outside rather than using a tumble dryer. Use a pan which is the same size as the cooker ring to prevent heat loss. Use a lid on saucepans where possible, so the contents heat up faster and require less energy. When using a kettle, only boil as much water as you need. Consider turning the thermostat on your hot water tank down to 60 degrees centigrade which is a comfortable temperature for most people and will save on your heating costs. Engine oil See Oil Envelopes REDUCE Reduce envelope use by rejecting unwanted mail. Consider whether an email would do to save on both envelopes and paper. REUSE Keep used envelopes for reuse. Reuse labels can be purchased from a number of websites and retailers. Purchase recycled envelopes. Visit Sort-It or see p.44 for details. RECYCLE White envelopes (with or without windows) can be recycled in the green box or at the Paper point at Recycling Centres. Currently, brown envelopes and paper cannot be recycled because the paper fibres are difficult to breakdown during the pulping process. You can recycle small amounts of brown paper in a home compost bin. F Fluorescent light tubes RECYCLE Fluorescent light tubes can be recycled via the Fluorescent Light Tube point at the Recycling Centres.
