Glass Waste Journey
Glass bottles, including
wine, beer, sauce and coffee
jars, are collected in your
green box or at Recycling
Centres and Points.
These are collected in
large skips at Burgh Yard,
Arbroath.
The skips are transported
to O I Manufacturing Ltd’s
smelting plant in Alloa,
where the glass bottles are
crushed, cleaned and
sorted to remove any
contamination. The crushed
glass is known as cullet.
The cullet is combined
with small amounts of raw
materials, including sand,
limestone and soda-ash
to create the right mix.
The material is fed into
a furnace and heated
to 1600° C.
The recycled glass is cut
into pieces called gobs.
Each gob is pressed and
blown into shape, using a
mould in a forming
machine, to make a new
glass bottle or jar.
The finished containers are filled, sealed and packed, ready to be sent out to retailers.
You can buy recycled glass bottles and other products in many high street and
online shops.
Once you have finished with your glass bottles put them in your green box or take
them to a Recycling Centre and the process starts again.
Glass facts:
• On average, 260 tonnes of glass is recycled every
month in Angus.
• Households in Angus use an average of 331 bottles
and jars per year.
• Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy
to power your computer for 25 minutes.
• Green glass bottles made in the UK are made with
at least 85% recycled glass.
