N Nappies REUSE Modern and easy-to-use washable nappies are a great alternative to disposable nappies. Cancel old subscriptions if they are no longer required. REUSE Reuse newspaper for animal bedding, DIY or craft activities. RECYCLE Recycle newspaper via your green box or the Paper point at the Recycling Centres. O Office furniture See Furniture & furnishings REUSE The furniture projects will accept donations of office furniture and equipment in good condition. Consider visiting them or a second hand dealer when you require new office furniture. Oil (vegetable/cooking) REDUCE Use spray oils or try dry frying to reduce waste. REUSE Filter and reuse oil for deep-fat frying. RECYCLE Oil can be recycled at the Recycling Centres. It will go through a cleaning process and be used for fuel. Please do not pour oil down the drain.
O-P Oil (mineral/engine) RECYCLE Oil can be recycled via the Oil bank at the Recycling Centres. Please do not pour oil down the drain. P Packaging See also Cardboard, Paper, Plastic bags REDUCE Choose products that are not over-packaged, and buy loose fruit and vegetables where possible. REUSE Reuse packaging at home. Some local charity shops may accept bubble wrap and other packaging to reuse in the shop. RECYCLE Choose products with recyclable packaging such as cardboard and paper, which can be recycled at the Recycling Centres in Angus, and paper in your green box. Visit the Positive Package campaign website for more information on why packaging is necessary, how you can reduce, reuse and recycle packaging and the best way to advise supermarkets if they are over-packaging their products. For more information go to www.positivepackage.org.uk Paint REUSE Store pots of open paint carefully so they can be reused for retouching paintwork. Some theatre or community or youth groups may accept donations of paint in good condition. The Furniture Recycling Project Angus in Arbroath accepts donations of paint. See p.45 for details. Please do not pour paint down the drain. Traditional paints contain many substances that are bad for the environment and bad for health. Producing 1 litre of paint results in 30 litres of toxic waste.* Consider buying non-toxic, environmentally friendly paint as an alternative. Print double-sided wherever possible and try setting the default printer settings on your computer to minimise paper waste. REUSE Consider using real towels and handkerchiefs instead of paper towels and tissues. If you have to use paper towels, try to use as few as possible. Use scrap paper to make notebooks and for printing drafts. Use shredded paper for packaging or animal bedding. RECYCLE Recycle office-grade paper, newspapers, magazines, brochures, white and yellow-paged telephone directories, catalogues, white envelopes and the contents of junk mail via your green box or the Paper Point at the Recycling Centres. 31
