Acid rain at
Hubbard Brook
• Precipitation chemistry has been monitored
since the late 1960s, when scientists noticed the
unusually low pH, between 4.0 and 4.2 (5.6 is
normal for rain).
• Since 1965 rain water has been collected in
containers which are located throughout the
watersheds. The samples are collected weekly
and brought back to the lab where pH values
are measured and then entered into the longterm
database.
• Although pH has been rising steadily since the
Clean Air Act was passed in 1970, the
precipitation is still quite acid, and has effects on
other components of the ecosystem, such as
calcium levels.
