Interoperability
National policy agreed by Transport Ministers
seek to permit a customer of one toll road operator
to be able to seamlessly use other toll
systems. At present in Melbourne this is not a
significant problem as there is only one toll
road and infrequent users from Sydney or Brisbane
have other mechanisms available. Agreement
has not yet been reached between all toll
road operators in Australia on interoperability
procedures and revenue sharing.
Summary
Toll lanes are continuing to grow at over 15 per
cent per annum globally and developments in
electronic road pricing (zone or area based
rather than link based) could well accelerate the
growth in electronic toll collection in the next
decade.
The Melbourne City Link Project marks a
new standard in toll road operations and technology.
Overall the combination of e-TAG devices
and CityLink Pass has made the toll collection
system on CityLink one of the most advanced
in the world and demonstrates that the
necessary technology is available and proven
for urban and interurban highways. Transurban
is committed to taking the technology further
and in this respect will be driven by customer
service objectives as the basis of delivering an
even more successful project. Transurban are
looking for further opportunities to take advantage
of the unique skills they have developed.
