The (computed) air<strong>speed</strong> information is displayed in numerical format on <strong>the</strong> left side of each<br />

primary flight display(Figure 3 – (1)). A dynamic moving <strong>speed</strong> scale tape (Figure 3 – (2)) displays<br />

additional <strong>speed</strong> information depending on <strong>the</strong> air<strong>speed</strong> and phase of flight. For <strong>takeoff</strong> V-<strong>speed</strong>s<br />

are determined and input into <strong>the</strong> Flight Management Computer. Subsequently <strong>the</strong> V 1<br />

(Figure 3<br />

– (3)) and V R<br />

<strong>speed</strong> are displayed on <strong>the</strong> <strong>speed</strong> tape. Superimposed onto <strong>the</strong> <strong>speed</strong> scale tape<br />

is a green arrow (Figure 3 – (4)) which is <strong>the</strong> <strong>speed</strong> trend vector. The tip of <strong>the</strong> <strong>speed</strong> trend<br />

vector shows <strong>the</strong> predicted air<strong>speed</strong> <strong>after</strong> 10 seconds. The prediction is based on <strong>the</strong> concept that<br />

change in air<strong>speed</strong> and longitudinal acceleration stay <strong>the</strong> same. The <strong>speed</strong> trend vector points<br />

upward when <strong>the</strong> aircraft <strong>speed</strong> increases (acceleration) or down in case <strong>the</strong> <strong>speed</strong> decreases<br />

(deceleration). When <strong>the</strong> calculated <strong>speed</strong> trend vector is below a threshold it will not be displayed.<br />

The <strong>speed</strong> trend vector is designed as a helpful in-flight tool to set appropriate thrust setting and<br />

fly <strong>the</strong> desired <strong>speed</strong>. This reduces pilot workload when changing or maintaining an air<strong>speed</strong> or<br />

altitude.<br />

2.4 HISTORY OF FLIGHT<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morning of June 4th 2010 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boeing</strong> <strong>B737</strong>-800, with registration EI-DPX arrived from Faro<br />

(Portugal) at Eindhoven Airport. The flight from Faro to Eindhoven was flown by <strong>the</strong> captain, <strong>the</strong><br />

first officer would become <strong>the</strong> pilot flying on <strong>the</strong> return flight to Faro. The aircraft was scheduled<br />

to depart for <strong>the</strong> return flight to Faro at 09.30 6 hours. The crew performed <strong>the</strong> standard checklist<br />

items and followed <strong>the</strong> operators procedures for <strong>the</strong> flight. As part of <strong>the</strong> flight preparation <strong>the</strong><br />

different operational <strong>speed</strong>s (‘V-<strong>speed</strong>s’) were calculated using <strong>the</strong> approved aircraft manuals<br />

provided to <strong>the</strong> crew.<br />

After engine start <strong>the</strong> aircraft taxied from <strong>the</strong> parking stand to <strong>the</strong> threshold (beginning) of runway<br />

04 using <strong>the</strong> parallel taxiway (Figure 4). Eindhoven control tower directed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boeing</strong> <strong>B737</strong> to exit<br />

FOXTROT. The flight crew requested exit GOLF and <strong>the</strong> control tower agreed. The crew was given<br />

holding instructions to allow a general aviation aircraft <strong>takeoff</strong> first.<br />
