BANKING IS MY MONEY SAFE IN A BANK? Yes. Keeping it in bank means you don’t have to worry about your money being stolen or lost. You can earn interest from some accounts. With a checking account, you can write checks to pay for things, and this creates a record of payment that you can review. Checking, savings, and retirement accounts as well as certificates of deposit are FDIC insured. The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) is a part of the federal government that protects your money in case of bank failure. Specifically, it insures each depositor up to $100,000 if the bank fails. Some things are not FDIC insured even if you buy them in a bank. Some examples are: stocks, bonds, mutual funds and investment products. How To Choose a Bank Be sure that you choose a bank that can do the types of transactions you want and has the services you need. For example, if you are going to transfer money to your home country, make sure your bank can do international transactions easily. Your local phone book has a listing of banks in your area. Find out which one will be best for you. About Checking or Savings Accounts You will need to show some form of identification to open an account. The bank may require 2 forms of identification from you like: a drivers license, U.S. visa, resident visa (green card), passport, credit card, current utility bill, school identification card, etc. Call your bank if you have questions about this. Other Services at Your Bank The bank may provide you with these and other services (you may have to pay a fee) • Loans (home/auto) • Cashier’s Checks • Safe Deposit Boxes • Money Orders • Traveler’s Checks Usually, you are required to deposit a minimum of $200 to open your account. And the bank will give you important papers about your account. Remember to keep this all together in a safe place. Each month, you will receive a statement from your bank that lists all your transactions, your beginning and ending balance (money in the account), and other information. ATM (automatic teller machines) These machines are convenient to use because you can take money from your account, or check your balance 24-hrs a day.
