Welcome to the 3rd edition
of our Queensland Rail Travel
magazine Embark for 2013.
With Winter upon us our
thoughts turn north and west
to warmer climates. In this
edition you can soak up the
great deals and the sunshine in
Cairns, the Daintree and on the Great Barrier Reef.
Don’t forget to enjoy the Kuranda Scenic Railway
while you’re there. Why not spoil yourself in
Gold Class?
Our iconic train The Sunlander turned 60 on June
4th this year - and to celebrate we’re asking you
to share your favourite memory and go in the
draw to win a trip in Queenslander Class. See
page 17 for details.
We also take you way out west to the Channel
Country. Not many people go there – but it is
breathtaking. It’s truly a journey that you will
remember for the rest of your life. You may not
work for Australia Post, but you can even join the
Outback Mail Run from Quilpie.
Winter also means the Ekka in Brisbane - a
tradition that millions of Queenslanders have
enjoyed for more than a century. This year we
have special fares on the Bundaberg Tilt Train
to take you right to Exhibition station. And don’t
forget that our City network runs to Exhibition
station all day for the 10 days of Ekka.
I also urge you to read the heart-warming story
about Tammy-Jo and her Guide Dog Isaac.
Queensland Rail supports Guide Dogs Queensland
as one of our charity partners.
So sit back and enjoy Embark and your journey.
If there is anything we can do to make your trip
more comfortable, please ask one of our
The Channel Country
...ssh, the secret is out
This year we decided we might go for an adventure. We had been out to
Longreach about three years ago and loved the big skies and far horizons of
the area. Friends had told us about the southern part of the outback so we
decided to go see for ourselves.
Thank goodness we hadn’t been pushed for
time as Charleville has an amazing number
of things to do. We went to the Cosmos
Observatory and saw the craters on the
Moon, the rings of Saturn, a star cluster
with over 100,000 stars, double stars that
orbit each other and more … we were awed
by the beauty of the sky and the amazing
telescopes.
We also enjoyed astronomy by day, actually
held a shooting star in our hands, learnt how
to predict the weather – I had no idea how
much is involved, there’s a weather balloon,
ground temperatures, ice layers in the
atmosphere- just so much to know!
When we visited the Bilby Centre I had to
admit this is the place I lost my heart. The
bilbies are much smaller than I expected,
no wonder they have trouble fending off the
feral cats! The ‘bilby people’ do a great job
to save these little critters.
You know, I used to think the outback was
miles and miles and miles of all the same.
So we went to Charleville Botanic Park to
discover a host of different plants, trees and
buses. Suddenly I realised that the landscape
is ever changing and I should keep my eyes
open when we are travelling around.
We left Charleville determined to follow
the Natural Sciences Loop and had no idea
what to expect. We drove out of Charleville
and onto the great little town of Quilpie,
got down and dirty (literally) at the opal
fossicking field, it was great, seeing this
amazing colour shining through the rock.
Upset the wallet holder just a little when I
went shopping in the Opal Shops. The prices
are so much better than the cities and you
also get to talk to people who actually mine
the opals. Took time to look into the little
Catholic Church, St. Finbarr’s where the altar,
baptism font and lecture are completely
covered with opals – you have to see it to
believe it!
Just outside of town we visited Baldy Top,
the locals call these hills ‘jump ups’, the walk
was not too difficult, just take water but the
reward is a 360° panorama that goes straight
to the horizon about a million miles away.
Well not quite, but certainly the landscape
stretched for ever, simply breathtaking!
Travelling further west we visited the small
town of Eromanga, and the little Living
History Centre, from dinosaurs to pioneers;
it’s a story worthy of a movie.
We headed to Yowah to look for opal
nuggets – the word was intriguing enough,
as we thought nuggets came in only gold or
chicken! But no! Amazing opals in this iron
stone rock but cut the rock open and there’s
the opal, unbelievable.
Photos courtesy of Tourism Queensland
We decided to add extra days onto our
outback tour as we were now thoroughly
hooked with so much to learn, so much to
see, what’s a little time?
Off to Thargomindah. Had a lot of trouble
pronouncing this name until someone
told us it’s known as Thargo, great. Before
getting there we stopped at the wetland
system at Lake Bindegolly, just about every
bird was there, lots of furry and small lizards,
geckos and three lakes in the middle of
nowhere, and it’s like an oasis.
We visited the amazing Hydro Power Station,
where the bore water ran the turbines that
produced electricity, way back in... wait for
it 1893. So how good was it... well Paris
and London were the first places to have
electricity... the third, you guessed it Thargo
(see almost a local now).
We decided, yes we will go to the Dig Tree;
after all, as the locals would say, it’s not that
far. It is an amazing feeling going to the Dig
Tree, literally following in the footsteps of
Bourke & Wills.
Time to turn around head back to Eulo, boy
was this the best spot. After a few days on
the road we stopped and had a mud bath
at the Date Farm. The mud comes from
natural mud springs, that’s an interesting
story in itself, what’s even better we came
out of our bath with skin as soft as the
baby’s rear end.
Onto Cunnamulla, shook hands with the
Cunnamulla Fella, walked around the
Bushlands and learnt so much about the Great
Artesian Basin and the underground water
that keeps this part of Queensland alive.
Take the time; you simply must explore
this great southern outback region of the
Channel Country.
Thank you to Jane & David who shared
their holiday with us.
Outback
Mail Run
Ever wondered how the mail gets out there, and we mean really out there?
The Outback Mail Run takes you on an unforgettable journey through the eastern
Channel Country region of Queensland. Join the mailman as he delivers Australia Post
letters and parcels as well as local freight to our outback neighbours who live off the
beaten track.
Our Outback Mail Run adventure began
on the 1st July 1999 when we won the
Australia Post tender for the Trinidad Mail
Contract No.76. Mail Contracts have been
in our family for many years with my Great
Great Grandfather, Thomas Costello winning
the tender for the Oontoo to Innamincka
Mail Contract in 1898. Some years later, in
the mid 1950s my Grandfather K.J. Costello
purchased the Tobermory Mail Contract
from CrackerJack Larkins.
I started working for my Grandfather at
a young age and during this period he
also had the Eromanga Mail Contract,
the Mount Howitt Mail Contract and the
Adavale Mail Contract. They were very
busy times but a great time to learn about
the Outback Mail Run industry, a vital
service for our outback neighbours.
The Outback Mail Run was originally based
in our caravan park, the Channel Country
Tourist Park, which we purchased in
1998. From there our connection with the
tourism industry began. We have learnt
a lot since then and have since acquired
the Birdsville Caravan Park and the Quilpie
Heritage Inn. We are passionate about the
bush and more than anything we love to
show people why it’s so special.
The Outback Mail Run Tour is a unique way
to experience a day in the life of an Outback
mail man as he delivers mail, parcels
and supplies to remote cattle and sheep
stations. It is more than that though, it
also gives you the rare opportunity to gain
an insight into an area of Australia that
you would not normally get the chance
to see. This is a region made famous by
the story “Kings in Grass Castles”, a book
and later mini-series which charts the
pioneering history of Irish immigrant Patsy
Durack. The Outback Mail Run travels
through the original holdings of Patsy
Durack’s Thylungra station. This property
was once noted as the largest sheep
station in the Southern Hemisphere.
So if you want to help us deliver the mail
and open the gate for our driver, why not
It is without doubt, a journey that
you will long remember.
In the beginning...
The Sunlander Story.
It was Monday 27 May 1935 when the
Sunshine Express made its debut on the
Queensland Railways. The new wooden
bodied train was on steel underframes and
made up of three AAS first class and three
FBS second class cars, a first class sitter,
second class sitter and parlour car.
Initially six services per week were
provided to Townsville, with three
continuing through to Cairns. Northwards
of Townsville a railmotor provided a
connecting service.
The external appearance of the vehicles
was especially impressive and featured
a varnished exterior with a polished
interior. During the Second World War, the
Sunshine Express service was curtailed,
due to the emergency war time conditions
enforced on rail travel throughout Australia
and were reintroduced on a six day a week
service at the end of 1946. The varnished
exterior of the carriages was also changed
to a painted Tuscan red colour scheme.
The Brisbane-Cairns service became The
Sunlander, replacing the Sunshine Express.
The Sunlander commenced operations on
4 June 1953.
The introduction of air-conditioned sleeping
cars was a major innovation in this period,
and they were the first air-conditioned
sleeping cars to be built in Australia.
The new trains to run to Charleville,
Cunnamulla, Winton and Mount Isa, were
christened the ‘Landers, after the different
regions of Queensland they would serve,
the west, inland, tropical and central areas.
An order of 20 new cars was placed in
the early 1980’s, ten sitting cars, five first
and five economy class the final series of
ten cars were built as roomette (single)
sleeping cars each with shower facilities
at the end of the cars. The mid 1980’s saw
five new dining cars for the long distance
services, being a major overhaul of the
Traveltrain fleet and an upgrade of travel
for the future.

Royal Queensland Show (Ekka)
8–17 August 2013 at the Brisbane
Showgrounds
The state’s largest, proudest and most loved community
event, the Royal Queensland Show, fondly referred to by
Queenslanders as the Ekka, is almost here. Now in its 136th
year, around 400,000 visitors will come together from
August 8 to 17 to enjoy an experience unlike any other.
The Ekka continues to capture the attention and involvement
of show-goers with more than 10,000 animals, 23,000
competition entries, a smorgasbord of award-winning food and
wine, hundreds of rides and showbags, and hours of free family
entertainment on offer.
Located just 1.5 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD, this once a
year get-together is truly unique in the Australian landscape
and epitomises city meets country. Not too many events can
say they target all tastes and ages, but Ekka is the exception.
The show has evolved to become much more today than simply
cows, rides and showbags. There is a sophistication, in parts, to
the Ekka, so the question is... what’s your perfect Ekka day out?
For Ekka 2013, show-goers can customise their very own show
experience. Whether you’re a show tragic from way back or are
coming along for the first time to see the best of Queensland,
this year offers more Ekka than ever.
Our message is... plan ahead, buy your tickets now to capture
real savings and use the Ekka website to build your own Ekka
itinerary.
Showtime Ekka
stage entertainment, extreme rides, showbags, dagwood dogs,
that coveted champion blue ribbon.
Arena night show
The atmosphere in the main ring at night is explosive and
should not be missed. This year’s night program is completely
new and will incorporate world-first technology to captivate all
your senses. The producer tells us you can expect to see some
very special guests, but that won’t be revealed until closer to
showtime!
Sophisticated Ekka
Relax and indulge. Enter through Gate 1 on Gregory Terrace,
head straight to the upper level of Brisbane’s new Royal
International Convention Centre and you need not leave until
nightfall. Here, in the brand new state-of-the-art building
located in the heart of the Brisbane Showgrounds, you’ll find
entertainment and Ekka’s signature fashion parades produced
by Lindsay Bennett; alongside celebrity TV chefs, jazz artists,
fine food, wine and dining. And right outside, if you want to
venture out, you’ll catch the canine competition with those
beautiful pooches vying for the title of Best in Show. Ekka done
in style!
Fresh Ekka
Also in this prime location, just a stone’s throw from the upper
level of the Convention Centre, is the Woolworths Fresh Food
Pavilion which you can’t beat for delicious samples, fresh
produce and oh so fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate. And
downstairs on the lower level of the convention centre you’ll find
Queensland’s best fruit, vegetables and flora in the agricultural
pavilion.
My first Ekka
When it’s all about the kids and creating those Ekka memories,
you can combine the ‘Showtime Ekka’ experience with the
biggest classroom of them all. Best spots for the kids include
the iconic RACQ Insurance Animal Nursery, kids’ rides zone,
Learning Fun Pavilion, Heritage Bank Community Stage
and Streets Ice Cream Chill Out Zone with sand sculpturing,
interactive workshops and little farmers’ activities.
Ekka marketplace
A shopping haven for visitors, the Ekka is Queensland’s largest
marketplace with more than 400 retailers featuring clothing,
hats, bed and bath ware, handcrafted jewellery and quality
home wares. You can even buy a car at the show. Lifestyle
products, essential services and health products are enjoyed
by many show visitors looking to get their work/life balance in
check. If you want a true country akubra, Driza-Bone or leather
riding boots, you’ll find the best deals at Ekka.
Ladies day out
Back in the days of the very first shows, ladies wore their
finest garments with matching hats and handbags, for their
visit to the annual event. Why not recreate this with your
best lady-friends? Head straight to the Convention Centre for
the CommBank Natural Fibres Fashion Parades followed by
a visit to fine arts and cookery competitions in the Lifestyle
and Leisure Pavilion. Finish the day with the Country Women’s
Association to enjoy a Devonshire tea and freshly baked scone.
The Ekka is full of traditions, a unique atmosphere and
childhood memories which have been passed down through
generations of families. It’s a true Queensland experience and
one not to be missed.
Tammy-Jo’s Story
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t
Maintaining trust in the unseen is a challenge
for most people but none moreso than a Guide
Dog user who is blind or vision impaired. Just
ask 22-year-old Project Consultant, Tammy-Jo
Sheehan.
This vibrant young woman from Banyo in
Brisbane’s North lost her vision overnight when
she was just 10-years-old after experiencing a
severe reaction to antibiotics resulting in Stevens-
Johnson syndrome.
The life-threatening disease which attacks the skin
and mucous membranes is so rare that less than
a dozen cases have been recorded in Australia.
Patients literally burn from the inside out at a
rapid pace.
Adjusting to her new life without sight was
tremendously difficult for Tammy-Jo and often
heartbreaking for her parents and six siblings but
with their love, guidance and support she met the
challenge head-on.
Helping her along the way was the dedicated
team at Guide Dogs Queensland.
Tammy-Jo began using the White Cane in primary
school but three years ago swapped her ‘stick’
for sweet-natured ‘Isaac’ , her gorgeous Golden
Retriever/Labrador cross Guide Dog, and it
changed her life.
“I honestly don’t know how I ever survived without
him,” said Tammy-Jo.
“Before ‘Isaac’ I walked slowly and cautiously and
I lacked confidence. I was always walking into
things. Now the pair of us just fly around together.
He provides so much freedom and is incredibly
smart.”
“I have a physical leg disability too, and ‘Isaac’
is always mindful of it. When we walk up stairs
he makes sure I can reach the railing for extra
support. If there is a small rise in the road he lets
me know to be careful.
“We are a team, and I am grateful every day for
the independence and joy he brings to my life,”

What’s your favourite
Train? Why?
What is your most
memorable customer
experience?
Your favourite
destination that we
stop? & Why?
I would choose the Spirit of the Outback because of the
convenience of having all your meals included, it has
a great social atmosphere with many fellow travellers
starting their holiday together, and it has a lovely
“experience” feeling to it.
I had a lovely man book his holiday of a lifetime that was
going out to Longreach then up to Cairns who was blind
and travels with his guide dog. He was very appreciative
of me taking the time to ensure that he could include
everything he had always wanted to do without any
hassle and explained that he had been to travel agents
before that didn’t want much to do with him because of
the extra work his booking would require.
My favourite destination to get off the train is
Proserpine/Airlie Beach because that means I’m going
on holidays where I will be lying on a beach relaxing
on one of the islands, eating the local cuisine and
enjoying a cool drink.
What’s your favourite
Train? Why?
What is your most
memorable customer
experience?
Can’t choose between the Sunlander and the Spirit
of Outback – both have ever changing, but very
different scenery
Melbourne Cup Day last year where we encouraged
our customers to make their own Melbourne Cup hats.
Highlight was a lady from Germany who vowed to wear
her creation when travelling to Fraser Island as she said
the experience was the highlight of her trip.
Your favourite
destination that we
stop? & Why?
Barcaldine because of its history – in particular the Tree
of Knowledge
