1019 After Antonio Canova, an Italian marble figure of Pauline Borghese as Venus Probably late 19th century, unsigned, the draped figure depicted as Venus in the Judgment of Paris reclining on a sofa, est:$1000/1500 Note: The original marble sculpture by Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822), upon which the present sculpture is modeled, is in the collection of the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Pauline Borghese, sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, holds an apple, evoking the Venus Victrix in the story of the judgment of Paris, wherein Paris was asked to decide who was the fairest goddess among Venus, Minerva and Juno. Condition: Figure’s left hand with minor abrasions. Little finger of left hand broken off- not retained. Localized dark pitting across right-hand third of back, on figure’s upper torso, shoulder and arm and on sofa backrest- not visible when sculpture is viewed squarely from front.
