1065 A polychrome-decorated Sheraton Revival ‘’Carlton House’’ style lady’s<br />
desk with chair<br />
Circa 1900, satinwood with mahogany and pine secondary woods, decorated overall<br />
with female portrait medallions, putti, a musical trophy, and pearl, ribbon and foliate<br />
garlands, the galleried U-shaped superstructure fitted with drawers, pigeonholes and<br />
cupboards, surrounding a tooled leather writing surface, above three drawers, on<br />
square tapering legs; the matching chair with caned seat and back centered with a<br />
portrait medallion; 2 pcs, the desk overall, 36’’ H x 41.5’’ W x 24’’ D, est:$1200/1800<br />
Condition: Height of writing surface: 28’’. Dimensions of chair: Good condition for age.<br />
Structurally sound. Overall scratches, marks, rubbing and wear commensurate with<br />
age and use. Craquelure to varnish overall. Scattered cracks, chips and losses to<br />
veneer. Restorations to veneer. Narrow gaps to rear where superstructure is joined<br />
to base. The gallery with chips and one end slightly separated from superstructure.<br />
A square stain to top of superstructure. A 3-inch crack to underside of base. One pull<br />
missing. One lock missing from a cupboard. Locks replaced. Pulls to drawers of base<br />
non-conforming replacements. Uneven tone and heavy wear to leather surface with<br />
overall scratches, marks and wear, and with a large ring mark. No sign of woodworm.<br />
Hand cut dovetails. Nicely painted. Three keys included. Keys function in locks. Chair<br />
