Liaison News
A newsletter for principals, careers advisers and teachers Edition One March 2010
Welcome to this first edition of Liaison
News for 2010. The Team has been busy with
new students as they confirm their courses
and complete their enrolments. We would
like to thank you for facilitating our visits
throughout 2009 and for the work you have
done with these students to help prepare
them for the move to university study.
This year the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) is reviewing the University
Entrance standard. The outcome of this is
due to be released by the end of the year. In
the meantime, UC remains committed to the
national entrance standard.
We have begun our programme of visits to
our local Christchurch schools and we are
planning our visits to schools outside of the
Christchurch region for the latter part of term
one and early term two. Dates for key events
have also been confirmed and are included in
this newsletter. More specific information on
each event will be sent to schools closer to
these dates.
We are delighted to be able to include in this
edition a list of our scholarship winners.
We congratulate all these students on their
achievements and wish them well for their
first year of study.
We are continuing to introduce common
course sizes to the remainder of our
undergraduate programmes this year. This
means that from 2011 all undergraduate
courses will be 15-points or multiples of
15-points. We do not anticipate any further
major changes to courses or subjects for
these remaining qualifications.
We look forward to working with you all in
2010. Best wishes.
Celebrating Pacific success
2009 Pacific Achievers Evening
The University of Canterbury has a tradition of
celebrating Pacific students’ success with an
annual dinner followed by cultural performances.
The event celebrates Pacific students who have
recently graduated and those students who have
contributed to our Pacific community here on
campus by mentoring and supporting others.
Each year the event has grown as the number
of Pacific students on campus increases. We
congratulate all of these students and wish them
well for their future.
2010 Get Connected Orientation
The Get Connected Orientation was extremely
successful again this year giving new students
the opportunity to find out what it means to
be a UC student and how to survive university
study. Activities included meeting UC staff and
taking part in campus and library tours, and
information sessions designed to help them
settle into tertiary study.
Upcoming events for 2010
Discovery Day: 23 April 2010
Discovery Day allows students to gain a taste
of university life. It is mainly targeted at Year
12 students, although other year levels are
welcome. The day is an excellent opportunity for
students to get a real feel of what it means to be
a UC student.
The event includes a series of fun and interesting
lectures and campus tours, which help students
discover the vast range of offerings available. We
hope students find this a relaxed first look at UC.
Details will be sent to schools in March, or you
can find more information at www.canterbury.
ac.nz/liaison/eventsdiary.shtml
Careers Advisers Update Days:
13–14 May 2010
Careers Advisers Update Days provide an
opportunity for careers staff to find out what’s
new at UC, pick up relevant information for
students, meet new UC staff, and network with
colleagues from around the country. In addition,
tours of the halls of residence and the UC
campus will be available over the two days.
A full programme will be released closer to the
event. If you have any suggestions on the format
or content of the event, please contact the
Liaison Office.
Information Days: 6–7 July 2010
Information Days will again take place in the
mid-year school holidays. Aimed at anyone
thinking of undertaking study in 2011 and
beyond, this two-day event offers students and
their families an opportunity to attend in-depth
information sessions at UC’s Christchurch
campus. Limited accommodation at our halls
of residence will be available for out-of-town
students and their families.
UC news
Tightening of academic progress
As schools are very aware, the Government
has moved to cap the number of students that
it will fund at each university. UC remains
committed to the national entrance standard
and believes that all students that meet this
standard should be given the opportunity to
study successfully, but we have introduced
measures to ensure that students who are not
achieving are given an opportunity to improve,
or they may face being excluded.
In the first instance after a semester of study, if
students do not achieve a grade point average
greater than 1.5 they will be sent a warning letter.
If they do not improve their performance in the
following semester they will be excluded from
the Faculty they are studying in. If students
choose to return to UC to study in a different
area, and still do not improve performance, they
will be excluded from the University.
Students at all stages have the right of appeal.
Secondary students enthused
by their time at week-long
Nanocamp
While their peers were spending the summer
holidays at the beach, 12 secondary school
students were immersing themselves in the
latest developments in nanoscience technology
at the University of Canterbury.
The students were taking part in Nanocamp, a
week-long nanotechnology camp sponsored by
the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials
and Nanotechnology, which was open to Year 11
and 12 students from around the country with an
interest in science.
Participants got to work with UC staff and
students working at the cutting edge of
nanoscience technology through handson
laboratory investigations, lectures and
workshops. Departments involved in the
programme included Chemistry, Biological
Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Electrical and
Computer Engineering as well as the national ICT
innovation institute, NZi3.
Hawera High School student Stephen Greig with Helen Devereux, a technician in the University of Canterbury’s
nanofabrication laboratory, during the Nanocamp, 2010
Waitakere College student Megan Jamieson
said the highlights of the camp for her were
making gold nanoparticles in the chemistry
lab and fabricating functional nanodiodes in
the electrical engineering department. ’I think
Nanocamp is a great opportunity for anyone
considering a career in science as it gives you
an in-depth look at what studying science at
university is like, and it is also just fascinating for
anyone interested in science.’
St Cuthbert’s College student Vicky Tai said while
she had found the camp ’really intense‘ it had
been an exciting challenge that she had enjoyed.
’It was really different from what we usually
experience at school,’said Vicky. ’A lot of what we
learned we would never have come across if we
hadn’t come on the camp.’
Awards boost secondary
students’ interest in science
as a vocation
A world of scientific opportunity was revealed
to three Christchurch secondary school
students who were given a chance to spend
three weeks of their summer holidays at the
University of Canterbury recently.
Erena Waretini (Papanui High School), Nicole
Franklin (Christchurch Girls’ High School) and
April Palmer (Christchurch Girls’ High School)
were among 12 secondary students nationwide
awarded MacDiarmid Institute Discovery Awards.
The awards, funded by the MacDiarmid Institute
for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology,
target senior secondary school students of Māori
and Pacific heritage.
They aim to nurture an interest in science,
expose pupils to possible career options and
encourage them to undertake tertiary studies in
the sciences. The awards are worth $1000 each,
plus flights and accommodation.
The other award recipients were based at Victoria
University of Wellington and Massey University.
The South Island recipients’ programme
began with a three-day visit to the Institute
in Wellington in December, followed by three
weeks working alongside academic staff
and postgraduate students in science and
engineering during January.
Erena said the internship had opened her eyes
to the many study and career opportunities
available to her in science, as well as a whole new
world of scientific knowledge.
“Coming here has made us realise how little we
actually knew,” said Erena. “And there are just
so many areas of study to choose from. I keep
changing my mind about what I want to do.”
Erena said she was keen to go on to study science
at tertiary level now that she had experienced
the university environment.
Changes to entry to
the Certificate in University
Preparation
Due to the change by TEC to the funding of
pre-degree programmes, the number of students
able to undertake the Certificate in University
Preparation (CUP) has been capped. This has
led to the establishment of a selection process
which will look at a student’s potential for a
successful outcome to their university study.
Applications from students who are under 20
years of age on the first day of the programme
will be ranked according to their NCEA results.
The closing date for applications for programme
entry is now three weeks before the start date
of each intake. It is recommended that students
include a short personal statement to support
their application.
Accommodation Update
We received great applications for our halls of
residence this year. All the halls are now busy
settling their students into hall life, living in
Christchurch and studying at the University.
If you or your students are interested in viewing
any of the halls you are welcome to book
a tour in advance by either completing the
Campus Tour booking form (www.canterbury.
Emerging Leaders’
Development Programme
Sixty-two of New Zealand’s brightest young
students have taken part in the inaugural UC
Emerging Leaders’ Development Programme.
The students — all recipients of UC Emerging
Leaders’ Scholarships — spent three days learning
about leadership styles and skills, familiarising
themselves with the campus and testing
their limits.
The University introduced the programme as a
way of helping prepare tomorrow’s leaders by
giving them the necessary skills and experiences.
The programme began with a presentation of
scholarship certificates in UC’s Ngaio Marsh
Theatre and addresses to the students by 2009
Emerging Leaders’ Scholarship recipients Anna
Fields and Isaac Manuel.
Twenty-two UC Emerging Leaders’ Scholarships
were presented for all-round excellence with a
further 11 awarded by individual colleges and
departments and one Pasifika Award. This year,
for the first time 25 scholarships were presented
to head boys and head girls from South Island
high schools and a further five were awarded
based on sporting achievement. All scholarships
are worth $5000.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr told the scholars
that they were ‘extraordinary, talented young
people who had been selected for their
leadership potential from the pool of 4500 firstyear
students’.
As part of the programme, the students headed
to Adrenalin Forest where they got their blood
pumping and confidence soaring on the multilevel
aerial obstacle course. Back on campus the
students took part in an Amazing Race before
relaxing at a barbecue dinner at Rochester and
Rutherford Hall. The following day the students
attended lectures on leadership presented by
MBA Director Peter Cammock and Engineering
Management Director Piet Beukman.
The programme continues over the next 11
months with further workshops, seminars
and networking opportunities. In groups of
six, the students will work with not-for-profit
organisations within the local community.
UC student named Young
Engineer of the Year
University of Canterbury PhD student Michael
Newcombe has become the first university
student to be named Young Engineer of
the Year at the New Zealand Engineering
Excellence Awards in recognition of his work
on the development of an innovative timber
construction technique.
After completing his first degree at the
University of Canterbury, Michael did a master’s
in earthquake engineering at the University of
Pavia in Italy. He has continued to build on the
research he undertook in Italy and is working
towards a PhD on the design of reinforced wood
structures using laminated veneer lumber held
together by high-strength steel. His research
investigates the use of timber as a structural
material in multi-storey buildings and focuses
on earthquake performance. He is part of a large
UC PhD student Michael Newcombe
research consortium called the Structural Timber
Innovation Company (STIC) which is working to
increase the use of wood in the construction
industry. Michael’s research is based on an
innovative UC timber construction technique
enabling buildings to be assembled on site
from prefabricated elements. In order to create
strength, steel tendons are run through the
centre of the timber beam and tensioned.
’They act like rubber bands connecting the entire
structure,’ he says. ’STIC has been able to dispel
a number of myths or mistruths about using
timber in multi-storey buildings – such as fire
safety, earthquake resistance and durability.
’Recently there has been renewed interest in
multi-storey timber buildings within the
New Zealand government sector that is having a
flow-on effect to the private sector and
international markets.’
Aside from the sustainability elements, the work
by the STIC has the potential to establish a new
industry and add value to the forestry industry.
A major element of Michael’s PhD work has been
the construction of a two-storey experimental
building within UC’s College of Engineering.
The experimental structure has performed
extremely well in earthquake simulations,
remaining undamaged after being subjected to
the equivalent of a magnitude seven earthquake.
This has been attributed to the inherent
flexibility of timber. The research work is now
moving into the commercialisation stage, with a
three-storey building using the new construction
technology due to be built in Nelson.
The New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards
are the premier awards for New Zealand’s
engineering profession. The Young Engineer
award is given to someone who is judged to
have made the most excellent contribution as an
engineer, as a leader and/or through community
involvement. Those eligible for the award this
year had to have completed the final year of their
first engineering qualification in 1999 or later, and
have been no older than 33 on 1 January 2009.
