37 A Heartfelt Tribute Richard M. and Maggie Daley Richard M. Daley, the longest serving mayor of Chicago, had a boundless enthusiasm for the arts which led to incredible feats including the revitalization of the North Loop Theatre District, the creation of Millennium Park and the building of Goodman Theatre’s new home on Dearborn Street. Mayor Daley helped to arrange the donation of the Selwyn and Harris theaters, played a key role in securing funding for the new Goodman Theatre and participated in several high-profile events during our capital campaign. At a re-dedication ceremony, which celebrated the Goodman’s first decade on Dearborn, the theater honored Mayor and Mrs. Daley for their substantial contributions to our organization. During the ceremony, the Daleys were named Honorary Life Trustees of Goodman Theatre and two seats in the Albert Theatre were dedicated to them, now commemorated with plaques bearing their names. In Memoriam “[the theater] is a mirror…in a way, we get to face our personal triumphs and our calamities, our celebrations and our remembrances. the theater is a remarkable place and we’re all very fortunate to have it in our life here in this wonderful space.” Maggie Daley at the November 2010 Re-dedication of the new Goodman Theatre g All of us at the Goodman mourn the loss of Maggie Daley, whose love of education and the arts helped transform Chicago into a vibrant place to live and work. The first civic organization that Mrs. Daley became involved with was the city’s Cultural Center, the old central library that she helped remake into a centerpiece for culture in Chicago. In 1991 she founded Gallery 37, a program to promote arts training and jobs for Chicago youth. This initiative evolved into After School Matters, a not-for-profit program to provide teens with educational and career-oriented activities in such areas as sports and technology. Mrs. Daley also helped put a positive face on metastatic breast cancer, which can often be an isolating experience, by living with it publicly for nine years. Her dignity and passion inspired countless people who continue to champion her favorite charities. She will be remembered for her graciousness, her concern for children’s welfare and education, and her love for our city throughout her 22 years as the first lady of Chicago. She will be missed.
