Letter from Division Director
“Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary
because health is worth more than learning.”
—Thomas Jefferson
I certainly agree with Thomas Jefferson on the value of health as well as the vital role recreation plays in attaining and maintaining good health. Early in my career I worked as
a recreation leader and as a physical education teacher and coach and I took pride in making a healthy difference in people’s lives. I feel I still do today in my current role as a
publisher of resources that focus on activity and health. But as a publisher I also value reading and learning, which brings me to the terrific line-up of resources you’ll find in this
catalog.
We’re especially proud of our expanding line of textbooks. Highlights this year include Applied Research and Evaluation Methods in Recreation, which makes this often
overwhelming topic accessible and relatable by linking the concepts directly to the field, and Inclusive Recreation, a book that will help students learn to provide services to
diverse people of all ages and abilities.
Professionals in the field will find resources that will aid them in serving everyone in the community, from young to old. Leisure Programming for Baby Boomers offers
creative programming ideas for the millions of adults reaching retirement age. With Let’s Play, you can make sure that no kids are left on the sidelines by teaching them
the physical and social skills they need to make friends and be part of the action at the playground. And Team-Building Activities for the Digital Age shows you how to
reach out and engage teens and young adults using the technology they love. Outdoor professionals will learn to make the freedom and renewal of paddling available to people
of all abilities with Canoeing and Kayaking for People With Disabilities.
Whether you’re a professor, park and recreation professional, outdoor or adventure educator, youth leader, or coach – working in private industry or the municipal sector
– you’ll find resources that will help you in this catalog.
Minimize risk for
participants and
a comprehensive resource for those charged
with providing for the safety of participants
and spectators in a sport or recreation setting.
It covers a range of safety issues, including
lightning, heat illness, aquatics, playground
safety, drug testing, and medical emergency
action plans. Readers receive clear and detailed
explanations of issues to consider before
making decisions on risk management. Organized under land-based or water-based
activities, each activity lists guidelines, recommendations, and standards along with
the source for that information. Each entry includes Web sites where readers can find
the full documents. The text also features sample guidelines and safety checklists from
agencies and associations that demonstrate how organizations might plan for risk and
communicate safety information.
Prevent incidents
with proper design,
maintenance, and
supervision of play areas
S.A.F.E. Play Areas is a resource for facility managers
and play supervisors in any playground or play area.
This all-in-one guide explores the four components
of the thoroughly tested, easy-to-implement
S.A.F.E. model: Supervision, Age-appropriate
design, Fall surfacing, and Equipment. For each
component, the authors first examine the research
to show why it’s a critical part of safety. Then they
explain how to put that knowledge to practical use. The book’s CD-ROM includes a
presentation for use as a quick refresher course in supervision, design, surfacing, and
equipment maintenance for experienced employees or as training for new employees. It
also contains reproducible safety assessment and injury report forms.
Are you prepared?
More and more schools and youth sport organizations
are requiring CPR and AED certification for coaches
and other staff members. Sudden cardiac arrest
is the cause of nearly 350,000 deaths in the U.S.
each year, 7,000 of which are kids. Studies show that 95 percent die without
early treatment and that with immediate CPR/AED administration, survival
rates double or even triple in some cases.
The new ASEP CPR/AED for Coaches online course provides training that’s
specifically geared toward coaches. Developed and delivered by ASEP in
conjunction with the American Safety & Health Institute, the CPR/AED for
Coaches online course shows participants how to provide basic life support
and have the confidence to act in an emergency situation.
For more information on our Emergency Care program and using the
courses, the hassle of scheduling and conducting clinics is a thing of the past.
Coaches get the training they need when and where it’s convenient for them. If
you prefer to bring your coaches together for training, ASEP classroom courses offer
right-out-of-the-box materials to help you facilitate clinics and provide coaches with
valuable take-home references.
• Affordability—Classroom courses start at $16.95 per coach, while online courses
are $19.95. Volume discounts are available, reducing the price to as low as $10.17
per coach depending on the number of coaches you train.
W
ATHLETES FIRST
• Convenience—ASEP online courses
provide coaches with 24/7 convenience and
save you a lot of work. And our classroom
courses offer a turnkey program that can
be administered by even novice sport
administrators.
• Three-year certification—ASEP courses offer a three-year certification, without
coaches having to ante up annual membership dues required by other organizations.
• Online tracking—Our web-based National Coaches Registry documents course
completion and tracks certifications.
• Valuable takeaways—Courses are supplemented by books (e-books or hard
copy), study guides, forms, checklists, and plans that coaches can refer to well after
they take the course.
your staff. Rather than have everyone take the same general class, you can offer each
staff member a course that will help them learn the skills in a way that makes sense to
them—by working through situations they’ll likely face on the job. Participants will be
asked to role-play realistic scenarios, such as practice 911 calls, and complete interactive
activities based on American Heart Association guidelines, including virtual CPR and AED
activities. Because they learn the skills within a work context, they’ll make the connection
to real-world experience more easily and be able to act confidently if the need arises.
Once participants have passed the online component, they take part in an instructor-led
session followed by written and practical exams to receive certification from the ASHI.
• Save staff time. Your staff will train for certification online so they study
whenever and wherever they want, leaving more time to spend on their regular duties.
Preparing online also means you won’t have to bring everyone together at the same
time for a traditional classroom course, making it an especially attractive training option
for your seasonal employees.
• Dedicated customer support staff. Our staff will be on hand to help
make the implementation process as quick and easy as possible.
Why choose the AquaTech program?
AquaTech is the newest program from Human Kinetics and Starfish Aquatics Institute.
It is designed to prepare you to operate a pool or aquatic facility according to U.S. and
international training requirements. Using a combination of online study and on-site
competency testing, the AquaTech certification course offers a flexible alternative to
classroom-only certification methods with the following benefits:
• User-friendly, non-intimidating training. AquaTech helps you master the
fundamentals of aquatic facility care through clear, simple explanations of the key
concepts. Rather than just working through pages of math problems, you’ll learn
the hows and whys behind the essential procedures, resulting in a more thorough
understanding of the job.
• Developed by industry leaders. AquaTech was designed with the help of experts
who understand the changing needs of today’s aquatic facilities. These people include
Robert Burrows, Tom Carrico, Robert Clayton, Juliene Hefter, Mick Nelson, Jill White,
and Kent Williams.
About the AquaTech program
AquaTech is a new certification program for pool operators. It consists of an online selfstudy
component and an instructor-led classroom component. The AquaTech online course
will teach you how pool systems work and how to maintain them, as well as how to
diagnose, prevent, and solve common pool care troubles. You’ll also find information
on reducing risk and increasing safety at your facility. After completing the course, you’ll
have all the requisite competencies to successfully operate a pool or other aquatic facility.
• Meaningful interactive online instruction. The course is more than just book
content presented online. It takes participants through a typical work day to help them
connect important concepts to real-world practice. They will work through interactive
scenarios based around situations they’re likely to face on the job.
• Outstanding study and reference materials. The AquaTech text features full-color
photographs and reader-friendly elements such as margin notes, best practices tables,
and step-by-step instructions for common pool issues. Included with each book is
the AquaTech Pool Tool, a handy laminated reference card that features formulas,
conversions, charts, and calculation tips. Both resources will be valuable tools even
after the course is completed.
Following successful completion of the online course, students take part in an instructor-led
session. Successful completion of the instructor-led session leads to certification.*
*Certification requirements may vary. Some cities, counties, or states only require the online component
for certification. Please consult your local code or contact us for details regarding requirements in your
area.
Why choose the StarGuard program?
Human Kinetics and Starfish Aquatics Institute have teamed up to create a blended
approach to lifeguard training that will help your facility in a number of ways. “Blended
learning” means that your prospective lifeguards will first take an online course and
then attend an in-person training session to test for certification. The benefits of this
approach, and specifically the StarGuard program, are numerous:
• Individualized, experiential approach to learning. Students can work through
the online course at their own pace, reviewing material as necessary. Students are
asked to role-play situations that they might one day face on the job, resulting in a
deeper, more thorough understanding of the key concepts.
• Savings of both time and money. The total amount of pool-time and instructor-time
necessary for certification can be reduced because students learn the cognitive aspects of
lifeguarding via the online course before arriving on site. Therefore, it costs less in facility
operating expenses or rental and less in fees for instructors.
About the StarGuard program
The Best Practices for Lifeguards online course (the first component in the StarGuard
blended learning experience) integrates basic lifeguard training and the four key
emergency care competencies all in one highly interactive program. This course is
complemented by two texts, Complete Emergency Care and StarGuard: Best Practices for
Lifeguards, Third Edition. To ensure mastery of the emergency care skills during the selfstudy
component, this course is also available with the Family & Friends CPR Anytime Kit
• Convenient delivery of high quality instruction. Students no longer need to
be in the same place at the same time to receive a consistent level of high quality
instruction.
• Focus on professionalism and accountability. Being a lifeguard is a serious and
important job. The StarGuard program focuses on behaviors that will help lifeguards
be at their best.
• Dedicated customer support staff. Our team is here to make implementing the
StarGuard program as easy for you as possible.
from the American Heart Association. This kit includes a small, personal CPR manikin so
that the student can practice hands-on skills during self-study.
The instructor-led component of the training follows the successful completion of the
online course. Successful completion of the instructor-led component, which includes
written and practical exams, earns certification.
Create high-performance lifeguards with these games, skill drills,
and activities
Meet the industry-standard of 4 hours per month of ongoing
in-service training for lifeguards with Lifeguard Training Activities
and Games. This complete resource provides a blueprint for
ongoing training from the moment a lifeguard joins your staff.
It includes more than 70 proven activities that enhance training
and conditioning of lifeguards and create a high-performing staff.
Throughout the book, the focus is on keeping activities fun and
engaging to promote participation and ensure your lifeguards
acquire the skills they need in order to take action in an emergency.
Divided into chapters by type of lifeguard skill, the activities
are short enough to be part of an in-service or class warm-up
session. Most have variations, allowing for continued challenges
of participants’ performances through increasing levels of difficulty.
The drills, games, and activities improve lifeguards’ general aquatic
skills and physical fitness; surveillance, emergency response,
and rescue skills; and teamwork and problem-solving skills. With
this knowledge and training, aquatics managers and lifeguard
supervisors will be able to develop and maintain a high-performing
lifeguard staff.
Teach lifeguards techniques designed to save lives
The Lifeguard Vigilance Training DVD helps ensure lifeguards meet
the challenges of staying alert and prepared on the job. For the
first time ever, two videos, Disappearing Dummies: Why Lifeguards
Can’t See and the Five Minute Scanning Strategy, are combined
conveniently on one DVD. World-renowned aquatic safety expert
Dr. Tom Griffiths explains the challenges caused by visual body
blindness and introduces new techniques to stay more alert and
focused while lifeguarding.
The first portion of the video features Disappearing Dummies:
Why Lifeguards Can’t See. In this video, viewers learn how and
why it is so difficult to detect bodies on the bottom of swimming
pools—even when the water is crystal clear. The straightforward
illustration of the phenomenon of visual body blindness is
startling, even for viewers with many years of aquatic experience.
Based on this evidence, the video introduces and prioritizes
bottom sweeps as a way to prevent drowning accidents. In the
second portion of the video, Griffiths introduces his systematic
approach to lifeguard surveillance called the Five Minute Scanning
Strategy. This strategy is based on years of scientific research and
studies done with thousands of lifeguards around the world.
Lifeguards will stay more awake and more alert by employing this
revolutionary strategy.
With this book, any adult can be a water learning
facilitator—and the activities are designed for use both in pools
Bring focus and
connection to each
yoga class
Guiding Yoga’s Light presents 74 easy-to-follow,
succinct lesson plans offering instruction in
hatha yoga, including asana, pranayama, the
yamas and niyamas, the chakras, creating
mindfulness, and understanding emotions.
Lesson plans progress from basic yogic concepts
important for beginning students to more
advanced material. Each lesson plan offers a
written script for use in class. For beginning
teachers, these scripts provide a helpful structure and set the stage for mindful yoga
instruction. More advanced teachers may use these lessons and scripts as a creative
departure point for expanding on the wellness effects of asana or focusing the day’s
practice. Beginning with basics of breathing, Guiding Yoga’s Light progresses to the
physical and spiritual philosophy of the asanas and salutations and ends with lessons to
bring clarity, calmness, and relaxation into daily life.
Adult Programming: Fitness
Expert instruction on
teaching hatha yoga
Instructing Hatha Yoga describes the qualities
and knowledge yoga instructors need in order
to be competent and effective teachers. Two
features in particular set this book apart: simple
yet comprehensive cues that teachers can use
to bring students into proper alignment and
deeper mental focus, and detailed instructions
on making safe hands-on adjustments and
modifications for students. You’ll also find
detailed descriptions on how to teach 69 yoga
asanas (postures), modifications for each
posture, and effective ways to work with students of different abilities in the same class.
A DVD included with the book shows how to achieve the most accurate positions for
a sampling of postures and the hands-on adjustments instructors can make to assist
students.
Like an X-ray inside every
pose
Yoga Anatomy brings the inherent relationship
between yoga and anatomy to life with full-color,
detailed anatomical illustrations that are like
viewing X-rays of the body within the scope of
yoga’s customary postures (asanas). The book
arranges yoga postures and exercises into six
sections using the base of support of each pose as
a guide: standing, sitting, kneeling, prone, supine,
and arm supports. Postures are further categorized
according to the spinal movements involved:
forward bending, backward bending, twisting, side
bending, and spinal lengthening. Throughout, particular emphasis is placed on how
the breath and the spine create support or release in the various practices and how the
muscles coordinate in stretching, mobilizing, and stabilizing actions.
Assess youth fitness and educate your community on the importance of every day activity
Childhood obesity is a serious problem. More and more organizations are getting
involved in the effort to get children moving and improve their health. The Fitnessgram/
Activitygram program, which was developed by The Cooper Institute, can help you achieve
both of those goals.
The program is made up of two parts. Fitnessgram is a fitness assessment tool that
assesses children’s fitness levels based on what’s optimal for good health. It uses criterionreferenced
standards that emphasize personal fitness for health rather than goals based
on performance. You can use this information to work with the children to improve their
fitness and overall health. The second part of the program, Activitygram, emphasizes the
need for physical activity. After children track their activity for three days, Activitygram
will give them personalized suggestions for increasing or maintaining their activity
levels to meet national guidelines. You can even use the program to issue challenges to
children to increase their physical activity. The fun of the challenges encourages them to
participate and helps them get motivated.
Fitnessgram/Activitygram’s reporting functions can also help you get parents involved.
You can generate printed Fitnessgram and Activitygram reports that can be sent home
with each child. The reports explain in non-technical terms why physical activity is
important and recommend physical activity options for improving children’s fitness and
activity levels.
Evidence-based health education from the Harvard School of
Public Health
Eat Well & Keep Moving and Planet Health are comprehensive,
multifaceted programs that address nutrition and physical
activity simultaneously. These programs are proven to be
effective in combating a major factor related to childhood
obesity: too much time in front of the TV. Extensive field tests
show that children taking part in these programs ate more fruits
and vegetables, reduced their intake of saturated and total fat,
watched less TV, and improved their knowledge of nutrition and
physical activity.
Both books include instructions for campaigns that encourage
kids to watch less TV and reduce other screen time, as well as
numerous lesson plans for both classroom-based activities and
physical education style activities. The books also include
tools for involving parents and the community and a CD-ROM
with reproducible worksheets, additional resources, parent
information and newsletters, and more.
Use technology to build personal connections
Team-Building Activities for the Digital Age offers a fresh approach
to promoting interpersonal communication and encouraging
young people to express their individuality and build face-to-face
relationships. The activities use the technology that today’s young
adults thrive on—including cell phones, social networking sites,
MP3 players, blogs, and digital cameras—as an opportunity for
education and enlightenment. Each of the activities serves as
the basis for guided conversation about topics such as diversity
and cultural sensitivity, teamwork and problem solving, and
communication and self-expression.
For each activity you’ll find instructions for leading the activity, a
list of the technology and other materials needed, a goal for the
activity, and several questions to help jump-start conversation so
participants can explore the purpose of the activity and discuss
what they’ve learned. You’ll also find suggestions for running the
activities when the requisite technology isn’t readily available and
for modifying the activities to make them more challenging. In
addition, the authors offer practical tips for planning, preparing,
and leading the activities, plus ideas for creating a supportive
environment that encourages respect and the safe sharing of
information.
Sport Club Management breaks down the complex
fundamentals of management for all club
sports—whether a multi-age-level program
with an extensive budget or a local club with
limited resources. Those who manage and lead
planning guidelines
Space Planning Guidelines for Campus Recreational
Sport Facilities offers the latest research on campus
facilities. The National Intramural-Recreational Sports
Association (NIRSA) contracted the National Research
Institute for College Recreational Sports & Wellness
to survey experienced administrators from nearly 200
U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities, asking
not only for an inventory of existing facilities but
also for opinions on whether those facilities were
adequate in meeting the needs of their campuses. Those data were used in developing
these space-per-student facility planning guidelines.
Guidelines are given for five facility types: total indoor space, fitness facilities, climbing
and outdoor adventure facilities, aquatic facilities, and outdoor sports facilities. All of the
data are cross-referenced by facility type and total enrollment.
An accessible approach to research and evaluation in recreation
Audiences: A text for recreation, park, leisure, and tourism undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a research and/or
evaluation course.
Applied Research and Evaluation Methods in Recreation is the
only text currently available to integrate research, evaluation,
and basic statistical analysis and link them directly to
the recreation field. The book provides students with the
foundational knowledge they need to move through the
research process. They’ll explore the different types of
research commonly used in the field and then learn about
the steps involved in designing a project, from developing
the research problem, reviewing literature, and identifying
variables and hypotheses to defining the population to
study, developing the instrumentation plan, and choosing
the appropriate data collection tools. Then they’ll move on to
evaluation concepts, including internal validity, data analysis,
and reporting methods.
The author’s approach to the material makes this textbook
truly unique. Each chapter builds on the next to clearly
explain the steps of the research process and show how
all of the concepts are interrelated. Students will learn not
only why the concepts are important, but how they relate
to the field. Each chapter closes with learning aids that help
students apply what they’ve learned: a case study, exercises,
and “For the Investigator,” an ongoing research project
that uses a hypothetical recreation survey to give students
realistic practice in recreation research. In addition, chapter
opening scenarios offer examples of the kinds of research
students might be expected to undertake and Professional
Perspectives sidebars offer descriptions of real research
projects from current professionals.
The book also includes an online student resource (OSR) that
provides additional opportunities for students to apply the
information they’ve learned. They’ll analyze two scholarly
articles, one qualitative and one quantitative, throughout the
course based on the concepts learned in each chapter. The
OSR also contains a case study for each chapter, application
exercises, and data and documents related to the “For the
Investigator” project.
group dynamics; supplemental text for core courses
in recreation, leisure, and parks and tourism.
Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure builds
skills in creating and facilitating conscious
growth of their members as a main objective.
The book introduces the theory of group dynamics
and moves beyond the theory to show students
that their understanding of group dynamics can
be a meaningful and realistic tool. They’ll learn to apply the theory to the practical factors
involved in leading and working with conscious groups. They’ll also examine common
issues that arise when working with groups, including potential pitfalls and strategies
for dealing with or avoiding those pitfalls. Throughout the book, case studies, scenarios,
learning activities, and examples from leisure services, parks, tourism, and experiential
education help students better understand and apply the information.
