College News Parents Provide As parents we are very used to providing the best we can for our children. They receive the best of us. Our children have first dibs on our love and find new and interesting ways to empty our wallets... and we wouldn’t have it any other way! It therefore seems logical that the parents of the Parents and Friends Association keep doing what parents do, providing facilities and resources for the benefit of all our children here at Redeemer. As we celebrate the 30th birthday of the college, we can look back with enormous satisfaction at the valuable contribution this willing band of volunteers has made to this community over such a long time. In recent times, the P & F has completed a major refurbishment of the Tuckshop which has been of considerable benefit to all who use the service. The refurbishment of the pool area has been a major improvement with the remainder of the project to be completed this year. Apart from the new starting blocks, hot water and soft fall around the deck area, shade and seating will soon be installed. The arrival of the shade and seating for the Junior School is from a successful grant application. These grants, and many more in the future, have been facilitated by the P & F Grants Officer. The P & F have bravely invested funds into this position in order to have the best opportunity of success with these grant applications. 2010 will be about finalising the Pool project and brainstorming ideas for community events the P & F can sponsor as well as working through which projects we can concentrate on in the next few years. It is a privilege for me to be amongst people who truly value the role of the P & F in the life of our Redeemer community. They are people who are willing to participate in a myriad of ways so that together we can make a substantial contribution to the college now and into the future. Choir Rises (worth $4,000) 2. New Drum Kit for Studio 6 (used for percussion lessons) 3. Gong for the Concert Bands 4. French Horn (purchased in 2010) 5. Extra tutor books for the Year 5 band program (2010) 6. Double Bass (purchased in 2009) 7. Two Honours Boards in mahogany (currently being constructed) 8. Tuba 9. Subsidising of the biennial Piano and Vocal competition 10. Championship Trophies for the Biennial Piano and Vocal Competition 11. Tablecloths and candle holders for Chamber by Candlelight evening 12. Donations towards make-up for the musicals flashback 30 years THE OFFICIAL OPENING “The opening service in February had been an important low key event. The official opening on 13 April was to be different. The premier of Queensland, Mr Joh Bjelke Peterson, accepted the invitation to perform the opening, and Pastor Reinhard Mayer, the President of the Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District, dedicated the college and the first building to the Glory of God. The Commonwealth Minister for Education had been invited, and was Senator Neville Bonner. Pastor Mayer in his address reminded the new school community that the focus of the school was always to be on the care of the individual students, on their spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs, rather than on the needs and success of the school as an institution.” Extract from: “River of Hope: Reminiscences of the first years of Redeemer Lutheran College” by founding headmaster, Mr L R Kleinschmidt. Redeemer Alumni Redeemer Veterans Incorporating Past Parents, Past and Present Grandparents, Past College Council Members, and Past Employees The year 2010 is already well advanced. Even Redeemer Veterans, who have finished their time as Redeemer parents, College Councillors and staff, have been active in the early part of the year. We welcome all past parents, College Councillors and staff to join us in relaxed and enjoyable social activity to maintain old friendships, build new ones and to continue our valued relationship with the school we all love and support. 01 02 03 What we have done so far this year: Our 10th Annual Reunion Dinner was held at The Glen Hotel, Eight Mile Plains on Friday evening, 5 March. The evening was greatly enjoyed. PowerPoint presentations about new developments at the College were given by the Principal (David Radke) and the Chair of the Our Saviour congregation who worship at the College (Ken Krenske). It was a delight to see four past parents from the very early days and to welcome two past parents from last year. We held our AGM and General meeting at the college in the P & F Meeting Room on Sunday afternoon, 18 April. After refreshments we were taken on a guided tour of the new buildings (Junior School area) by our Deputy Principal, Rosilyn Frieberg. The new executive for the association are: Noela Kleinschmidt (President), Patricia Skytte (Secretary) and Margaret Fletcher (Treasurer). Ongoing things: Membership fee remains at $5 per person and this entitles you to receive the Association’s newsletter and invitations to events held in private homes. Our coffee evenings continue to be held on the second Sunday of each month (except December and January) at The Coffee Club, Springwood. These monthly social gettogethers are open to all past members of our College family.
