Improving Patient Medication Safety in the Home Using (GS1) Barcode Technology and a Smartphone App
Feargal Mc Groarty, National Haemophilia System Project Manager, IMS Department, St. James's Hospital, Ireland
Unlike any other time in history we now have mobile technology that can be leveraged to provide the tools required to increase
patient safety, improve administration compliance, capture clinical information and support a rapid real time medication recall.
St. James Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, has recently implemented a mobile phone application (App) for hemophilia patients so that they
can record their medication usage at home by scanning barcodes on the pack prior to self-administration. The initial phase of the
study has demonstrated that it is conceptually and technically possible to design, develop, and implement a medication management
system (medication scanning App) that integrates smartphone technology, barcode scanning, and an electronic diary to record and
optimize medication compliance for patients.
Integrated IT and Mobile Solution Increases Societal Benefits for the eHealth in the City of Stockholm
Stefan Carlson, Head of Unit, IT-Department, in the City of Stockholm, Sweden
Carina Lindquist, Application Manager, Social Care, The City of Stockholm
Quality of life and independence for the elderly and more time for caring, less time administrating are two goals for the City of
Stockholm. The City of Stockholm, together with Tieto has digitalized the eHealth service processes that allow elderly and home
care employees to have mobile access to everything from work schedules, case history notes, electronic keys and personal alarms.
Time that was previously spent dealing with administration can now be devoted to quality time with care recipients and for operational
development. A lot of new e-services are established to simplify life for the elderly, their families and employees.
Mobilizing Healthcare with Mobile Point-of-care Solutions
Marc Angotti, Director General, Clinique Esquirol Saint Hilaire (CESH), France
In this presentation, Angotti will present a case study, detailing how France’s CESH, a private, 335 bed clinic with 15 care units,
implemented mobile health technologies – 115 tablet PCs from Motion Computing and Ware Système’s Sharegate medical records
software, a full bedside EHR – in order to completely eliminate its paper-based processes as well as continuously deliver on its longstanding
policy of improving the quality and safety of patient care.
Angotti will highlight the resulting benefits, which include real-time access to information on procedures, treatments and medications,
the improvement of working conditions and staff satisfaction as well as increased security, efficiency and overall patient care. With
the mobility solution, everything is brought together in a single tool that is accessible at the patients’ bedsides. All dual copying and
transcription of data has been eliminated, and as such, so has the risk of errors inherent in these transcriptions.
