Portfolio Preparation Day Course
The Portfolio Preparation Course is
immersed within the broader Glasgow
School of Art community. A creative
hothouse - you will be part of an
environment where new ideas are
always encouraged and developed by
both students and staff. Concentrating
on fine art, design and architecture,
we share a passion for every aspect of
visual culture.
The Department of Continuing Education…
runs a Portfolio Preparation Day Course aimed at assisting
students in the preparation of a body of work for application
to their chosen area of study. The course provides students
with their own Portfolio studio in the Mackintosh Building,
giving students the opportunity to work in a unique art school
environment, an exciting and dynamic place full of creativity
and inspiration. Students attending this course have been
consistently successful in achieving entry to Higher or Further
Education Fine Art and Design courses, both in Glasgow and
further afield.
THE COURSE…
is studio based, running 2.5 days per week for 25 weeks from
August to March. Broad based and flexible in content, the
course is structured to assist students in the selection of a
specialist area of study. With drawing as its foundation, the
course is project and critique driven. Projects vary in length
ranging from one-day workshops to those that run over two to
four weeks. Seminars, exhibition visits and discussion groups
aim to broaden student’s awareness of both historical and
contemporary art practices. These underpin and support the
studio work, enabling students to contextualise their practice
and situate their work within a broader artistic context. The
course provides a platform for feedback and review of work,
as well as advice on selection and presentation of work for
inclusion in a portfolio for application.
What our former students thought…
“The experiences I gained from the portfolio
day course were entirely unique and offered me
the perfect stepping stone between school and
a degree course. The course was a wonderful
influence on my work and style while allowing
me to work and think independently, supported
by the brilliant tuition given.”
Lauren Bryden, GSA Graduate, Textiles
THE TUTORS…
have extensive teaching experience and are practicing
designers and artists with a strong commitment to the
practice of drawing and promoting the creative process.

What our former students thought…
“The portfolio course at GSA is the perfect
introduction for anyone planning to pursue an
art education. It gives you a solid grounding
in all aspects of art and design practice and
provides a nurturing atmosphere to explore
your own potential. Personally, I would not
have been in a position to make an
application without it.”
Diane Hutchison, GSA Graduate, Fine Art Painting
