the U.S. Navy. He had joined the U.S. Naval Reserve on July 26, 1945. He began his naval career at the<br />

San Diego Naval Training Center in September , 1945. From that point on he served on various types<br />

<strong>of</strong> ships , including Submarines, on land installations in the continental U. S. and overseas and also in<br />

Aircraft. Married in Bellmore , Long Island to a Miss Virginia Ruth Brem on May 7, 1949, had a son,<br />

James Allen, born in Freeport, New York on March 8, 1950, was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in<br />

July, 1961 while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and was Commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Navy in<br />

November, 1962 while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. He was advanced to Lt. Commander in<br />

December, 1972 while stationed in Naples , Italy, Retired as a Lt. Commander on March 1, 1975 while<br />

still stationed in Naples , Italy. Returned to the U.S. in 1975 and in June , 1979 bought an Amoco<br />

Service stationed and kept it until September, 1994 when he sold it and fully retired. Bought a new<br />

house in August , 1985 at 1937 Grayfalcon Drive, Norfolk, Virginia and continues to live there at<br />

present which is 1997. Had a quadruple heart by-pass in January , 1996, a very mild stroke in January<br />

, 1997 and Bells Palsey April, 1997. Bowls in a retired Officers and Wives bowling league, and is an<br />

ardent Golfer shooting in the 80's when he can get out.<br />

Lt. Commander B.J. Holcomb, USN Ret., 75 <strong>of</strong> Norfolk, Virginia passed away January 14, 2003 in his<br />

home.<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Trent, Texas, raised in Borger, Texas, LCDR Holcomb retired from the United States Navy<br />

after more than 30 years <strong>of</strong> service. He was a member <strong>of</strong> Masonic Seaboard Lodge No. 56 in<br />

Portsmouth, Virginia.<br />

He is survived by two brothers, James Allen Holcomb <strong>of</strong> Pampa, Texas and Kenneth Laroy Holcomb <strong>of</strong><br />

Trinity, Texas and two grandchildren Penelope Anne Holcomb and Michael James Holcomb both <strong>of</strong><br />

Spain. He is also survived by a sister in law Judy Muller <strong>of</strong> Long Island, New York and a host <strong>of</strong> nieces<br />

and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia (Ginny) Ruth Holcomb, a son CTIC<br />

James Allen Holcomb U.S.N., parents, Ben and Bennie Holcomb and a brother Roger Crowson<br />

Holcomb<br />

A graveside service will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery with date to be announced at a<br />

later time. <strong>The</strong> family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Chapel in<br />

Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday January 16, 2003 from 7-9 p.m. Graveside services are set for Billy John<br />

Holcomb on February 10, 2003 at 9:00 a.m.<br />
