BERMUDA BUTTERCUP Oxalis pes-caprae DISTINCTIVE FEATURES This herbaceous plant grows from underground bulbs and bulblets. Its clover-like leaves and funnel-shaped yellow flowers are characteristic. BLOOMS Yellow, November - March. PREFERRED HABITAT Forms spreading patches in winter-rainfall areas. Prefers light-textured soils and sun-to-part-shade. Bermuda buttercup is native to South Africa. KIKUYU GRASS Pennisetum clandestinum DISTINCTIVE FEATURES This is a perennial turf grass, distinguished by its extensive stolen and rhizome system and bright green leaf color. Flowering stems support leaves that are often covered with short hairs. The stolens are often flattened with swollen nodes. Plants often found in dense mats, 6-12 inches high. BLOOMS Bristly-spikelets, April - October. PREFERRED HABITAT Forms spreading patches in sunny areas with warm weather, primarily in disturbed areas, fields and along roadsides below 350 feet. Can also grow along ditches and streambeds.

Spreads by seed and underground stems. Native to the Mediterranean region, it is widespread in California since it is used for forage and withstands heavy grazing. BRISTLY OX-TONGUE Picris echioides DISTINCTIVE FEATURES This plant grows as a biennial herb, 1-3 feet tall. The species has erect branched stems, arising from a basal rosette. The leaves are bristly, with a rough, sandpaper-like texture and clasp the. The flower heads are 1” wide in terminal heads. BLOOMS Yellow, April - December. PREFERRED HABITAT Bristly ox-tongue is common in coastal grasslands and previously disturbed areas, where it can forms dense infestations. It spreads by seed, forming a rosette in year 1, with flowering and seed set in the 2 nd year. Native to the Mediterranean region.
