On the 7th of May I went to the Rotary Youth in
Adventure program in Canberra. The function ran for
a week. In this week Rotary delegates from around
the country; learnt about government, the House of
Representatives, the Senate, debated political issues,
met local federal MP’s, listened to guest speakers
and had a great time. I would highly recommend
year 11 students to apply for this trip next year as
it was amazing and very interesting. I would like to
thank Russell and Simone for encouraging me to go.
Convention
The Constitutional Schools Convention is a fantastic
opportunity for college students to learn about
Australia’s constitution and Government. This year for
the 16th Constitutional Schools convention the topic
for debate was: ‘Should Australia become a republic?’
On the 22nd of March five Tasmanian students and
an amazing supervising teacher Bronwyn Sidebottom
made their way to Canberra.
The days were made up of guest speeches, working
groups, discussions and soap box sessions.
Thursday night was a highlight with the much
anticipated reception at Government House by the
Governor General, Quentin Brice. This was a wonderful
opportunity to meet the Governor General who
was inspiring in her elegance, grace and gave an
excellent speech. This was followed by dinner at The
High Courts and a tour. Thursday was the concluding
day of the convention and involved choosing a
republican model with the majority voting for the 2/3
bipartisan model. Then finally came the moment we
had been waiting for the referendum and vote, with
professional voting booths and process. Tasmania
was the first state to be counted and showed a
unanimous vote in favour of a republic. From there
on it was fairly close between the monarchists and
republicans but overall ended with a clear majority in
favour of a republic.
Thank you to Janet and the teachers that elected me
for this amazing opportunity!
Behavioural
A group of around thirty year ten students from a number
of different schools came to Newstead to learn more about
behavioural studies, to help them decide whether it is an
area of interest to them. There was a presentation including
some of the concepts studied in sociology and psychology.
The year ten students found some of the smoking and
male dominated ads from earlier eras both surprising and
amusing, as they would be inappropriate
in this day and age. The students were very
interactive and asked many interesting
and sophisticated questions. This showed
that the program is beneficial and worth
repeating. I enjoyed being part of this
educational experience and hope others
are able to be involved next year.
