Trinkle Ed Verner Al Whitaker Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular Center Now Open SFBH introduces diagnostic heart care for the first time in Plant City. The latest diagnostic tests and procedures for cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disease are now available close to home, with the grand opening of the new Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular Center at South Florida Baptist Hospital. SFBH team members and volunteers received a first-hand look at the facility in early September, followed by a public open house on Sunday, September 12, during which Plant City area residents toured the facility and received free blood pressure, diabetes and body mass index screenings. One lucky participant won the drawing for a heart healthy package, which included a free CT heart score, a carotid artery Doppler test and a screening to evaluate peripheral vascular disease in the legs. At a physician open house on September 16, the SFBH medical staff enjoyed refreshments and learned more about the center’s capabilities from Lawrence Whitney, M.D., a SFBH interventional radiologist, as well as Debi Brightwell, imaging services manager, and Teri Colletti, nurse manager of ICU/PCU, who are co-managers of the new program. Then in October, the SFBH Foundation hosted a dinner at the center for major donors and unveiled the wall of honor listing their names. “We were pleased to raise nearly $700,000 for the program, which once again demonstrates how generous our community is in helping us support SFBH’s continued excellence in health care,” says Judy Martin, executive director of the SFBH Foundation. “We are also honored to recognize Evelyn and Batista Madonia, whose gift made them the signature sponsor for the new center.” The Madonia’s are well-known Plant City philanthropists who own the Red Rose Inn and Suites, as well as East Coast Brokers and Packers. BayCare Health System, of which SFBH is a member, funded the 8,200 square-foot, $4.5 million center, with the SFBH Foundation raising money for additional expenses related to the project. A large crowd gathered under the tent for the grand opening ceremonies for the Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular Center. (Continued on page two) We need your help! Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular Center Now Open - Continued “Plant City has a wonderful reputation for being a philanthropic and caring community,” says Steve Nierman, SFBH chief operating officer. “Our community is truly a better place because of the many people who step forward to help fund projects like this that improve the quality of life for everyone.” “The new Evelyn and Batista Madonia Sr. Heart and Vascular Center will have a very positive impact on patients, their families and the Plant City community,” says Nierman. “Many of the tests and procedures that we will perform here, especially in heart care, such as cardiac catheterization, arterial stenting and balloon angioplasty, have not been available in Plant City until now. The new Center and its staff will save lives and improve outcomes for these patients and that’s very significant for our community.” Help Us Light the Holiday Tree on Dec. 2 Debi Brightwell (right), co-manager of the new heart and vascular center, explains the new service to volunteers and team members during the open house. Mark your calendar for the lighting of the holiday tree at McCall Park on Thursday, December. 2. This is the 12th year for Lights of Love, the popular community event sponsored by the SFBH Foundation and the City of Plant City to mark the start of the holiday season. Each year individuals, families and businesses have stepped forward to purchase one or more lights for the 26-foot live tree, doing their part in helping illuminate the tree, while at the same time helping fund important community outreach programs at SFBH. As always, we hope you will join us in making this program possible. Lights must be purchased in advance to be included in the holiday program. Use the form below to send in your donation. You can place one or more lights on the tree in your own name or in honor or memory of someone special. Sponsorships for the event are also available.
