Meet the Hospital’s Leadership Team
Tammy Gaschler
Tammy Gaschler is
often the SFBH manager
everyone turns to for help
with complicated issues.
That’s a testament to her
experience – she’s been an
RN at the hospital since 1995, most of the time in the ER.
But it’s also part of her current role as manager of Patient
Care Coordination, a position she’s held since 2003.
“Patient Care Coordination is a department that
touches nearly every aspect of a patient’s hospital stay,”
says Tammy.
Under the Patient Care Coordination “umbrella”
are services such as Case Management, Social Services,
Denials Management and Medicare Compliance. Her
team members’ role are varied, from serving as patient
advocates and keeping the channels of communication
open between the patient, family and hospital, to making
sure patients’ needs are addressed and that services
received are appropriate. Just as critical, team members
make sure patients and families understand post-discharge
instructions and help identify community resources that
might be needed after leaving the hospital.
“The goal of everything we do is to ensure that
patients have the best outcome possible for the highest
quality of life,” says Tammy.
A Plant City High School graduate, Tammy and her
high school sweetheart, David, have been married for 29
years. They have two children: David, 27, and Kayla, 21.
Tammy is currently working on her MBA at St. Petersburg
College and the University of South Florida. She received
her RN degree from Hillsborough Community College
and a health services administration degree from
St. Leo University.
Kyle Hammond
First impressions can be critical and Kyle
Hammond has the unique job of making sure that
SFBH looks good every day of the week. As the
manager of environmental services, he’s in charge of
keeping the hospital clean, polished and germ-free.
“We set the tone from the minute patients and
visitors come into our facility,” says Kyle. “It’s only
natural that people may perceive what type of care they
will receive from how the environment looks around
them. It’s our task to make sure that everything is
perfect 24/7.”
Infection control is an essential part of the job,
from the hospital lobby to patient rooms, the operating
suite, public restrooms and team member offices, you’ll
find environmental services scrubbing and disinfecting,
as well as making everything shine. “We touch every
single area of the hospital,” says Kyle. “Everyone is our
customer.”
Kyle has only been at SFBH for four months, but
he has been in environmental service management
for seven years, since he completed an MBA at
Charleston Southern University in South Carolina and
was recruited by a company providing environmental
services for health care organizations. Before coming to
SFBH, he was at hospitals in Atlanta and Pensacola.
Kyle recently finished his master’s degree in health
services administration through an online program
from the University of South Dakota. He is at SFBH
through the hospital’s contract with HHA Services, a
national food and facility management consulting firm.
Heart and Vascular Center Now Open
SFBH introduces diagnostic heart
care for the first time in Plant City. The
latest diagnostic tests and procedures for
cardiovascular and peripheral vascular
disease are now available close to home,
with the grand opening of the new Evelyn
and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and
Vascular Center at South Florida Baptist
Hospital.
SFBH team members and
volunteers received a first-hand look at
the facility in early September, followed
by a public open house on Sunday,
September 12, during which Plant City
area residents toured the facility and
received free blood pressure, diabetes and
body mass index screenings. One lucky
participant won the drawing for a heart
healthy package, which included a
free CT heart score, a carotid artery
Doppler test and a screening to
evaluate peripheral vascular disease
in the legs.
At a physician open house
on September 16, the SFBH
medical staff enjoyed refreshments
and learned more about the
center’s capabilities from
Lawrence Whitney, M.D., a SFBH
interventional radiologist, as well as
Debi Brightwell, imaging services
manager, and Teri Colletti, nurse
manager of ICU/PCU, who are
co-managers of the new program.
Then in October, the SFBH
Foundation hosted a dinner at
the center for major donors and
unveiled the wall of honor listing
their names. “We were pleased
to raise nearly $700,000 for the
program, which once again demonstrates
how generous our community is in helping
us support SFBH’s continued excellence in
health care,” says Judy Martin, executive
director of the SFBH Foundation. “We
are also honored to recognize Evelyn and
Batista Madonia, whose gift made them
the signature sponsor for the new center.”
The Madonia’s are well-known Plant
City philanthropists who own the Red
Rose Inn and Suites, as well as East Coast
Brokers and Packers.
BayCare Health System, of which
SFBH is a member, funded the 8,200
square-foot, $4.5 million center, with
the SFBH Foundation raising money for
additional expenses related to the project.
A large crowd gathered under the tent for the grand opening
ceremonies for the Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and
Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Heart and Vascular
Center Now Open - Continued
“Plant City has a wonderful reputation for being a
philanthropic and caring community,” says Steve Nierman,
SFBH chief operating officer. “Our community is truly a better
place because of the many people who step forward to help fund
projects like this that improve the quality of life for everyone.”
“The new Evelyn and Batista Madonia Sr. Heart and
Vascular Center will have a very positive impact on patients,
their families and the Plant City community,” says Nierman.
“Many of the tests and procedures that we will perform here,
especially in heart care, such as cardiac catheterization, arterial
stenting and balloon angioplasty, have not been available in
Plant City until now. The new Center and its staff will save
lives and improve outcomes for these patients and that’s very
significant for our community.”
Help Us Light the Holiday Tree on Dec. 2
Debi Brightwell (right), co-manager of the new heart and vascular center,
explains the new service to volunteers and team members during the open house.
Mark your calendar for the lighting of the holiday tree at McCall Park on Thursday, December. 2. This is the 12th year for
Lights of Love, the popular community event sponsored by the SFBH Foundation and the City of Plant City to mark the start
of the holiday season.
Each year individuals, families and businesses have stepped forward to purchase one or more lights for the 26-foot live tree,
doing their part in helping illuminate the tree, while at the same time helping fund important community outreach programs at
SFBH. As always, we hope you will join us in making this program possible.
Lights must be purchased in advance to be included in
the holiday program. Use the form below to send in your
donation. You can place one or more lights on the tree in
your own name or in honor or memory of someone special.
Sponsorships for the event are also available.
Bring the family for photos with Santa at the Depot from
5:30-7:30 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony takes place at 6:45
p.m. Plant City’s First Baptist Church will provide a wonderful
program of holiday music. For more information, call the
Eight Ways to a Better Estate Plan
If you haven’t done so already, today is the day to
begin planning your estate. Thinking ahead can save you
many tax dollars, and with estate tax rates reaching up to
55 percent in 2011, this should be of primary importance
to you. In addition, you want to control the disposition of
your property at death.
Below are some tips to help you make certain your
estate is properly planned.
1. Update Your Will or Living Trust
Your will or trust is the most important component of
your estate plan. It is the basis for distributing the majority
of your assets. Your will or trust should be updated
every three to five years and also after times of personal
change, such as marriage, death, divorce, birth, adoption,
inheritance or a move to another state.
2. Consider Taxes
Your estate plan may need to be updated because
of frequent tax law changes to the federal estate tax
exemption amount. Even though estate taxes are repealed
for deaths that occur in 2010, they will reappear in 2011—
then your estate can be worth only $1 million before
estate taxes are owed.
Just call the Foundation office
at 757-8478 if you’d like more
information. We have several
helpful and informative brochures
available at no cost.
3. Choose an Executor or Trustee
Think long and hard about the individual or
institution named to act as your executor or trustee,
bearing the responsibility of carrying out your wishes
after death. You will want to name someone you trust
implicitly, someone who is experienced to act. You may
consider naming a loved one along with an experienced
financial institution.
4. Name a Power of Attorney
Assign someone to act for you to handle your financial
affairs in the event that you are unable to do so yourself.
Property can also be managed, and disposition rights
granted, through a durable power of attorney.
5. Create a Living Will
Draft a living will that makes your wishes known
regarding extraordinary measures for keeping you alive.
A living will allows decisions to be made when you are
unable to communicate your wishes. This document
can help family members who may be distraught make
decisions based upon your stated wishes. You should
inform your family members of your wishes in advance.
6. Check Up on Insurance
Evaluate your insurance periodically. Make sure that
you have enough to cover changing needs.
7. Watch Your Investments
Commit to learning more about investments. Your
finances are your future, and the more you learn, the easier
and more interesting it becomes.
8. Be Charitable
An unlimited amount of money can be given to a
qualified charitable organization during your lifetime or at
your death, free of federal gift and estate taxes. Charitable
gifts are an important component of any estate plan and
may be especially helpful for
people who do not have heirs
to consider when distributing
their estate.
Through gifts to a
charitable organization, you
can benefit during life and
at death—and reduce your
taxable estate as well.
The Key Components to
Your Estate Plan
• Will/Trust
• Executor/Trustee
• Power of Attorney
• Living Will
• Life Insurance
• Investments
• Annual Exclusion Gifts
• Charitable Gifts
Fall Fancy Scheduled for Nov. 7
The ninth annual Fall Fancy on Sunday, November 7
will take place at two homes this year. Duane and Linda
Madill and Bill and Diane Morrow, who live next door to
each other on Sutton Woods Drive, have agreed to host the
event, which will take place from 12 noon to 3 p.m. For the
second year, Hopewell Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens
is the presenting sponsor for the popular event.
Guests enjoy a buffet luncheon, holiday “tabletop”
shopping with nine boutique vendors, a special prize drawing
and a self-guided tour of both homes. Hostesses will be on
A series of articles giving readers a “behind-the-scenes” look at SFBH departments.
department spotlight on community health
Community Health began as a grassroots
effort on the part of several managers at South Florida Baptist
Hospital. The managers wanted to bring health care services
outside the walls of the hospital directly to local residents –
and they wanted to deliver those services in a setting that was
convenient and cost-effective.
With sufficient time, energy and enthusiasm, the
managers’ efforts paid off.
First they developed a plan,
then they raised the funds,
including launching the
Children’s Golf Classic.
In 1997, they went forward,
introducing the Wellness
on Wheels (WOW) bus
to the Greater Plant City
community.
Today, Community
Health is not only a fully
staffed department, but a
highly visible ambassador
of SFBH. Each year, the
team delivers vital health
care services to thousands of
adults and children. In fact,
The community health department provided free screenings during the heart
and vascular center grand opening.
last year the department served 7,530 people at 153 events.
In addition, 2,986 children in Hillsborough County schools
received vision, height, weight and scoliosis screenings and
505 children participated in health safety education programs.
“Our goal is and has always been to improve the health
of the community,” say Jana Butler, manager of community
health, and Heather Coats, community health coordinator.
You’ll find the Community Health team at schools,
senior centers, churches, local businesses, shopping malls and
similar venues. The busiest times of year are spring and fall,
especially with flu and pneumonia vaccines. Heart healthy
and diabetes screenings are the most frequently provided
screenings year-round.
Many community events are collaborative efforts. For
example, a smoking cessation program is conducted with the
American Lung Association. Back-to-school physicals are
offered in partnership with the Hillsborough County School
System.
Community Health also organizes
popular SFBH-initiated events such
as the Children’s Health Fair, the
Spring Health Check for adults,
and Ladies Night Out, a program
focused on women’s health care that
is financially supported by the SFBH
Foundation. In addition, the team
teaches health education programs
like CPR and first aid, Safe Sitter, a
babysitting program for young teens,
and offers free weekly blood pressure
checks.
“With the downturn in the economy
and the rise in unemployment in our
area, we have seen participation in our
programs increase significantly,” says Jana. “People are truly in
need of health care services at low or no cost. What we offer
has a direct impact on families in our community.” It’s all part
of the SFBH mission.
A Plant City resident for 20 years, Jana has worked for
St. Joseph’s Hospital and South Florida Baptist Hospital for
23 years. She has a master’s degree in exercise science and
adult education. Heather has a bachelor’s degree in wellness
leadership from the University of South Florida. She has been
in the SFBH Community Health Department for four years;
three years as coordinator of the program.
