Trailer Brake Controller (TBC)
• Factory-installed and warranted by
Ford Motor Company
• Fully integrated into the instrument panel and the
vehicle’s onboard computer
F-150
Performance/Handling
• Ensures smooth and effective trailer braking
by powering the trailer’s electric brakes with a
proportional output based on the towing vehicle’s
brake pressure
• Controller adapts its output based on the status of
the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
• When the ABS module senses the towing vehicle’s
brakes are approaching lockup, the controller’s
braking strategy changes to compensate for traction
conditions, reducing the risk of trailer brake lockup
• Provides instant visual/audible warning in case of
accidental trailer disconnect
• Includes the following user indicators in the
Message Center:
– Trailer connection indicator
– GAIN setting display
– OUTPUT bar graph
• Manual control lever and +/– (GAIN adjustment)
buttons located on the instrument panel allow the
trailer brakes to be manually applied and adjusted for
optimum performance
• Available on all models as order code 67T, included
with Max. Trailer Tow Packages
• Requires:
– Trailer Tow Package
– Fog lamps and XL Décor Group on XL models
– STX Décor Package on STX models
NOTE: Ford Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) has verified
compatibility with trailers (one to four axles) utilizing
electrically actuated drum brakes and certain Electric-
Over-Hydraulic (EOH) actuated drum or disc brake
systems. See the chart at right for Ford-verified brands
and model numbers of TBC-compatible EOH brake
systems. There may be other EOH brake systems not
shown in the chart. Those systems have not been
Ford compatibility-tested with the TBC and are not
recommended for use. Ford TBC is not compatible with
any trailer equipped with a surge-type brake system.
ENGINEERING INSIGHT
Electric-Over-Hydraulic (EOH) Trailer Brakes
What are EOH Brakes?
• Electric-Over-Hydraulic trailer brakes, more
commonly known as EOH, differ from the more
common electric trailer brakes
• EOH brakes are operated by an electrically powered
pump that pressurizes a hydraulic fluid reservoir
• The fluid reservoir pressurizes either a wheel cylinder
(drum brakes) or a caliper (disc brakes) in much the
same way a vehicle master cylinder applies pressure
to the braking system
What You Should Know
• EOH trailer brakes are considerably more expensive
than electric trailer brakes, but offer benefits
desirable to certain customers, including:
– Smoother operation
– More responsive/predictable braking
– Resistant to operation in wet environments (such
as boat trailers)
• The factory-installed TBC is already compatible with
certain EOH systems in the trailer marketplace
• EOH trailer brakes are becoming more common in
the trailer marketplace, so be sure to determine if
the customer uses an EOH-equipped trailer since the
Ford TBC would be a strong sales advantage
