Regensburg”: 250 copies
The last edition can always be found at http://www.konvent-regensburg.de
We would like to thank Techniker Krankenkasse very much for sponsoring the printing of
this guide.

Dear fellow students…
…welcome at the university of applied sciences Regensburg!
The cover already reveals the idea of this guide. It’s just giving you on the next 89 pages
an insight of the university and everything Wie das Titelbild verrät wagen wir auf den
kommenden 89 Seiten einen Blick in die Hochschule und alles was related to it at your
probably new life as student.
This guide is divided into four areas:
• Your campus starting at page 10 gives you some orientation on the campus and
how to get there.
• Your studies groups important information about studying at the university of applied
sciences regensburg. It doesn’t matter, if you’re searching for a copier, a book
or important dates – after reading the page 32 et seqq., you’ll be better informed
than your profs ;-)
• Your student’s life gives you an idea, of what to do at your free time. With sport,
parties and night life tips starting at page 51 your day is planed quickly. Additionally:
How to find a flat or where to buy a b(u)ycicle?
• Your student’s union does not only try to write some guides in english, but also
offers considerably more. Page 66 and following include contact information of
fellow students and information about the organizational structure of the students
government as well as how to become part of it.
No worries – it is possible to master the studies and the new life in Regensburg without
this guide and don’t start memorizing all of it. It shall be an easy reading and a reference
for finding answers.
With all the information you will get: don’t get crazy! A new period of one’s life is always
exhausting and at the best manageable by share it with others. Make use of the freshmen
offers of the students union and you’ll find new people very quickly.
You can also visit us at our offies (see page 66). There we voluntary help you in your
questions and concerns. If the office is closed (which will happen, as we also have to
study), you can find a timetable, at which time we should be present.
This guide is result of hard work. Unfortunately some information are changing almost as
quick, as the rates of stocks. You’ll find some for sure and therefore. Ask your profs or us.
We wish you good luck, endurance and above all a lot of fun at your studies at the university
of applied sciences regensburg!

Your Campus
YOUR CAMPUS
Your campus in Regensburg is something very special. If you desist from the buildungs in
Prüfeninger Staße – whose users shall relocate sooner or later – Hochschule and university
share a huge interconnected campus which ranges from Seybothstraße to the clinical
centre of the university. The next pages will help you with the orientation and give you an
overview where you can apply for benefits and where you can get something to eat.
Ways in Regensburg
One part of the callback contributions which have to be paid every term additionally to the
fees (at that time 89,38 e ) is intended for the semester ticket . That is why the student ID
is valid as ticket in the public local traffic. This ticket is valid in the whole catchment area
of the RVV 1 (see page 14) and so in all busses, trains of the Deutschen Bahn as well as all
private railway companies if it is a means of transportation in the local traffic.
That means that you can go to Neumarkt as well as
from Fischmarkt to Uni Mensa stressless and for free.
The semester ticket is valid – like the students ID –
for the whole semester and so during the lecture-free
time, too.
But it is also worthwhile to have a bicycle – some
ways become really short then. If you want to buy
one you can find a small assortment of traders on
page 64. Promenades through the historic centre
or bike tours through rural environment have their
charm, too. There are also guided city tours in Regensburg
which are not intended to go a very long distance
and to hear a lot of things in very short time.
Those who are interested can have some orientation
here: http://www.regensburg.de/tourismus/de/
regensburg_erleben/646. By the way, there is also a
generally chosing subject in which you can get to know the city (S. 44). Normally, in the
welcoming bay to the city of Regensburg (if you register a second residence) a gift coupon
for a guided city tour.
In Regensburg, you are very flexible and moblie with the RVV-Ticket, bicycle and by foot
without having a car and you can go from one corner of Regensburg to another in short
time and also for free.
YOUR CAMPUS Ways in Regensburg
Ways to the university
Too many ways lead to Rome – and not only to Rome, but also to the university. If on foot,
with the bicycle, bus or car, everything has its pros and cons waiting to be tested.
by foot By foot it is often faster, especially to the historic centre, with a little bit of knowledge
of the place you can save time - compared to other means of transportation - if you
walk through the multitudinous alleyways and backyards. Moreover, the routes in Regensburg
are not as long as they seem: if you have to wait at Uni-Mensa ten minutes for
the bus, you can also go by foot and arrive at the same time like the bus at the central
station. If you take the ”Schleichweg” behind the canteen to Street Bischof-Konrad, you
can save time as well.
by bicylce With your bicycle, it is the fastest way to get from
A to B in Regensburg. Straight over the danube it is much easier
with the bicycle because you can go over both the ”Steinerne
Brücke” and the ”Eiserner Steg”. Other means of transport
cannot use those to bridges. So, you save half of the time
in comparison to for example bus and car. Additionally, you are
more flexible with your bike because you are not dependent of
some time tables.
To the university, you can take Universitätsstraße (drawn out
comfortable raising) or Galgenbergstraße (short raising, which
flattens on the way to the university) and on which you can
outrun the bus with a smile.
At the end, one can say that the bicycle is the best of all alternative solutions – but you
have to be weather proof and your bicycle has to be burglar-proof. The respect of foreign
bikes is rather notorious than famous.
by bus As long as you do not try to come just fast to your lecture, the RVV is a good
option. If you come of the closely city circle, you mostly do not have to change busses if
you want to go to the university. And by the way, the time tables are good organised in
time of lectures. But if you want to go home after midnight on weekdays after partying
you have to take the taxi or the bicycle or go on foot. From Friday to Saturday and to
Sunday the ”Nachtschwärmer” busses are available after midnight.
Bus transport is chosen mostly which causes nerve-wracking capacity overload. If you
want to arrive at the university on time, you should choose one bus earlier because the
busses are completly overloaded in the morning, causing longer ride times.
Study guide of student’s union – WS11 11

Ways in Regensburg YOUR CAMPUS
Reason is that some passangers do not know
that there a light barriers in means of transportation
at the doors. Closing the door can take
under certain circumstances (according to the
power of comprehension) up to ten minutes.
bus lines Bus lines which lead to the campus
are 2B, 4, 6 , 11, and 19. To go to Prüfening
you take line 1 or 4. During lecture-time, line 2B
and 11 are articulated busses normally every 20
minutes. Lines 1 and 6 are normally articulated
busses which drive every 10 minutes; Line 4 goes every ten minutes, but every second
run the bus ends at ”Klenzestraße” (Gesslerheim). At certain peak times a 6S bus drives
on the direct way to the clinical centre, but it is not recommendable. Line 19 is an exotic
every-hour-perhaps-once-bus-lines. Line 11 additionally runs every 10 minutes to the
campus and is available from 7:30 to 10:00 from Albertstraße to HS.R to University main
entrance, from 12:00 to 18:30 it is every ten minutes the opposite direction.
The line which is highly recommendable is line 2B. You don’t have to pass the Albertstraße
if you live in the historic centre. So, line 2B relieves lines 6 and 11.
You can receive more exactly and probably more clearly arranged information at the RVV
customer centre, Hemauerstr. 1, at bus terminal Albertstraße. You can buy a bus schedule
there (50 ct or more) or you can download freely from http://www.rvv.dė
by car … you are not that flexible in Regensburg. Parking lot affliction influences the
picture of Regensburg, at the university as well as in the city centre. Wrecking services
are at ”sites of crime” right away. Our suggestion: Cars only for emergency situations!
If you go to the university with the car, do not park at lawns, they are no parking areas.
Additionally, mind the road signs. But if your car is towed the following website might
help: http://www-verwaltung.uni-regensburg.de/Abschleppdienst.htm.
Nevertheless, if you need a parking lot in the city
centre, you can go to the Donaumarkt or parking
deck (for example the parking deck at Dachauplatz),
at some of them the first hour is for free.
But it is the same problem like with bicycles in
Regensburg. At parking areas on the campus,
the headlamps of the brand new car of a professor
as well as some radios etc were stolen in
broad daylight. So, it is not to be suggested to
use the campus as durable parking position …
Finding rooms YOUR CAMPUS
Finding rooms
First, you get some information about the room numbers of the university. In general,
rooms are denoted with a letter and a triple-digit number. The place of location affects
the first letter, followed by the floor and the room number. One example: U126. This room
is in the Sammelgebäude, first floor, room 26. Rooms in the basement floor are marked
with a minus between place of location letter and the first figure (for example S-102). The
following websites might help you finding rooms:
Study guide of student’s union – WS11 19

Getting some food YOUR CAMPUS
Getting some food
No card - no meal
It is not possible to pay cash in any canteen or cafeteria at the campus, you have to pay
with a special chipcard, which is also required to give you access to the university’s sports
centre.
The Mensacard service bureau is located in the
basement of the Uni-Mensa. There is a sign
next to the door, which can be entered from
the Albertus-Magnus-Straße (that is the street
that leads way through the Uni). You can catch
a card during monday to friday between 08:30
am - 10:45 am and 11:15 am - 02:00 pm by identifying
yourself as an student with your student
card as well as your identity card and paying
10 e as caution money.
There are several revaluate machines in the
canteen entrance areas for topping up your
mensa card. Therefore you have to press the
card on the machine as shown on the picture
and put money in it. The money you have on
account can be seen on the blue display. The
Mensacard is not only necessary for getting
food in the canteen but for the cafeterias and
drinks machines all over the campus.
Occasionally you may find a GiroCard-machine for topping up your card’s credit. Even if it
doesn’t really look like it in the first impression, the screen is indeed a touchscreen, where
you have to select the wished amount before proceeding with your card/pin …
locations
All in all there are three canteens for all the
students in Regensburg. One is located in
the Building in Seybothstraße, another is in
the basement of the building in Prüfeningerstraße,
and another at Uni-Campus (Albertus-
Magnus-Straße).
If you just want to have a snack, you could visit
one of the eight cafeterias spread all over the
campus (there is at least one in each bigger
building).
taste
It’s up to you, to decide, if you like the food in the canteen or not. Nevertheless, the
price-quality-ratio is student friendly and the variety in the daily range of meals is more
than just ok.
The friendly personal and good atmosphere is
also attracting students from Uni (though their
canteen is recently renovated). This leads to a
waiting time of up to 20 minutes during rush
hour.
It is recommended to spare the canteen during
12:00 am - 01:00 pm to avoid this inconvienience
unless you like queuing up to the library’s
entrance.
menu
If you need a decision making help for whether you head for the canteen instead of
the cafeteria, there are current menues put up in the cafeterias and you can also look
YOUR CAMPUS Administrative offices
Department of students administration
The department of students administration is divided into the following four deparments:
Service office, Department of examination administration, Department of internship administration,
Department of studies. It’s the first contact if there are problems regarding
studying or the life related to it, if you don’t go to the students council in first instance.
Unfortunately the administration
is located in Prüfeninger Straße.
There are phones, with which you
can call the staff of the administration
free of cost.
If these phones are used, only
the 4-digit direct access has
to be dialled. If you are calling
from outside, the phone number
ist (0941)-943-XXXX (XXXX
stands for the 4-digit direct access).
The phones are located at:
• Sammelgebäude, 2nd Floor near the secretariat or at the students government
rooms (U125)
• Seybothstraße opposite to the computer centre
• Maschinenbaugebäude, lobby of wing A at the info point
• Prüfening, you’re right at the staff, don’t be shy, they won’t kill you
Besides, it is recomendable to heavily use the webpages of the students administration!
There is a lot of information on questions which arise before, during or even after the
studies. All application forms can also be downloaded there:
http://www.hs-regensburg.de/einrichtungen/studentenverwaltung.html
For easier navigation, a short listing where to find what can be found at page 84.
Forms All Forms regarding the studies in general can be found at the named page. Unfortunately
forms referring to the faculties, can partially only be found on the intranet
(http://intra.hs-regensburg.de) under the item faculties. There can many more forms be
found on the intranet, but regular students won’t need them anyway, as their purpose
applies more to the administration.
If you want to contact the administration by phone, have a look at the office hours, as
they wont be available beyond them. In general it’s a good idea to send emails, as they
are usually answered within a day or two, and you therefore don’t have to worry about
Your Studies
YOUR STUDIES
CIP-Pool, confirmation (re-registration), library, AW-Fach – So many terms linked to your
studies. The following pages contain a compilation of useful information that will help you
becoming master of the situation.
The Change
One of the biggest changes from school to university is to be properly informed any time.
Poorly, at university it is not like in school, where letters to your parents and information
material is handed out.
Trust us, it happened more than once, that a
completely unsuspecting and innocent student
was exmatriculated simply because
nobody told that unlucky guy that it was
time to pay the fees for confirmation and
tuition. In other cases exams could not be
written as the student was not registered
and the deadline has been over for some
time. The easiest way to avoid unconvenience
like this is to check your email account
provided by the HS (see page 36) regularlay
and to have a look at the HS’ homepage
and the intranet site.
If you want to find out about something and
you don’t have any idea who to ask, the best
way is mostly to contact the professors of
your student body of your faculty (see from
page 71). In most cases they know the answer
and if not they can redirect your concern.
Also, the secretary of the faculty is a
good place to go to.
Furthermore of importance: Most dates and deadlines are only released by post or email.
Showcases are outdated in principle. The Grades of your exams and testimonials are almost
exclusively available online as well. Read more about this further on under section
QIS.
YOUR STUDIES Useful Webites
Useful Webites
The following sites are worth a periodical look during your studies:
• The Intranet: http://intra.hs-regensburg.de
• The Extranet: http://www.hs-regensburg.de/funktion/english.html
• Students of Faculty
– Computer Science & Mathematics (FSIM): http://www.fsim-ev.de
– Electrical- & Information Technolgy (FSEI): http://www.fsei-regensburg.de
– Applied Social Studies (FoSo): http://www.foso.de
– Business Administration (FSBW): http://www.fsbw-regensburg.de
Of course, also have a look on the site of your own faculty (http://www.hs-regensburg.de/
funktion/english.html, choose on top under faculties)! Just small news like cancellation
of lectures because of illness of the lecturer or short-term room- or schedule changes are
announced here.
Depending on the faculty notice boards are run to announce miscellaneous information
of the faculty. From time to time a look on it could be worthwhile.
QIS
QIS is an IT System available for students to organize their data at HS more easily. At the
moment the following functions are available for students:
• Information on registered exams
• Overview of grades, thus an overview of all the performances of your studies
• Paying of confirmation- and tuition fee via direct debit
• Certificates converted to PDF files:
– Overview of Grades
– Certificate of exam examinations
• Browsing the university’s internship database
• Updating addresses, phone numbers, mail addresses saved by the university
• Coming soon: schedule, room plan, cancellation of lectures, etc.
Overviews of grades, printed out by the QIS system are accepted by many companies etc.
without the examination office’s sign. Attention if you change your address in QIS. The
changes are not adopted to the library as they use another kind of database.
You can access QIS at: http://www.hs-regensburg.de/qis
Computer centre
The computer centre is responsible for much more than the intranet and homepage of the
university. Namely, everything around the computers at the university of applied sciences.
Nowadays computers are indespensable for students. Due to this there are Cip-Pools
on every location with all usually needed applications already
installed. Furthermore there are special applications
for some academic departments. Of course, internet
is available on each computer in the Cip-Pools .
There are some laboratories in several departments
that can’t be distinguished of the CIP- Pools. The difference
is that only students of the academic department
the laboratory is part of are capable of logging themselves
in.
Accounts You received the username and password for your CIP-Pool account on your
enrollment day. The password has to be changed once every 90 days – but don’t lose the
first password, you may need it someday. In case you’ve forgotten your password there’s a
chance to identify yourself biometrically: https://www-edir.uni-regensburg.de/psypwd/
Actually every student has a personal storage of 650MB. If – for some reason – more
storage is needed you can apply for it at the computer centre. Further information and
instructions:
Knigge Schedules showing lecture-times and exercises have been put up on the entrance
of each CIP-Pool. Please don’t rush loudly into them during exercises. You’re usually
allowed to use the computer as long as you stay quiet and do not disturb the lessons.
If the door is closed during a lecture, you must not step in!
YOUR STUDIES Copier
Copier
Even if it is today almost uncommon to copy stuff, there’s a Copier at each location of the
university of applied sciences.
In Seybothstraße the copier is located in the basement. Furthermore there’s a copyshop
of IGEKO , which is great for copying your lectures. There’s also a copier in the library - in
the basement near the cleaning rooms.
You find the copier in Galgenbergstraße in
room A110. If you want to copy in Prüfeninger
Straße: Just go downstairs in the entrance hall.
Above WIWI- Cafete in the entrance hall of
the university’s library there’s the copier of the
Sammelgebäude.
There are also other copyshops at or near the
campus, e.g. at the Uni-Mensa, at Ludwig-
Thoma-Straße or Bischof-Konrad-Straße and
also Papier Liebl has a copy-area and is pretty
cheep in binding stuff.
If you’ve got an IGEKO copier-card you can also use the copier in the library’s basement.
Copying for free If you need some copies for a performance record (e.g. a presentation)
in a lecture, you can mostly copy those things for free. You just have to ask your Prof or
assistant lecturer for a copy ticket.
Library YOUR STUDIES
Library
In 2008 the library contained 151.752 volumes and 556 subscribed magazines; furthermore
it was possible to get access to another 4700 magazines in the web - since then
stock’s still being enlarged. Thus you can easily prepare for lectures, examinations or just
look up something for yourself.
General
It’s not allowed to bring your jacket or your bag in the library. There’s a wardrobe outside
the library where you can leave your things at. Lending a key for one of the lockers is for
free (as long as you have the library card), but you have to hand it back at the end of the
day. In general you must not eat nor drink anything but water (unflavoured) in the library.
You are asked to be quiet in the reading room.
Even if there is no need for books or
magazines of the library, because of
the cozy ambience, it’s a popular place
to learn, as the amount of workspace
is pretty high.
Nevertheless, it’s still a library and
therefore dead calm dictated. If you
are still disturbed by your neighbours
typing or page turning, no worries, at
the entrance earplugs are available.
The library is also available on the
Central library Universität
The Central library cooperates with our library, which means that you can also lend books
from their stock with the common library card.
Useful information
http://www.bibliothek.uni-r.de
shelves The books are arranged by subjects. The topics
are listed on each side of a shelf. If you want to find a
particular book it’s advisable to use the computers. It’ll
hand you out a number that will direct you to the specific
book. The first letters are the main focus abbreviation
(e.g. PSY for Psychology) and the number identifies
the shelf it’s on.
Latest magazines and newspapers are displayed, back
issues are available too.
computer Some of the Computers are for OPAC searching, some are on free disposal like
the computers in the Cip-Pools.
lending books You definitely need a library card for lending books. You can ask for one
on the counter at the entrance of the library. If the book you asked for isn’t available in the
Library YOUR STUDIES
local library it is possible to lend it by interlibrary loan. Library staff may give you further
information.
After four weeks you have to bring the lent books back to the library. Only if no one reserves
the book during this time you can extend the period of lending up to a maximum
of three months. It is advisable to hand the books back in time, otherwise you are fined a
small fee of 7,50 e on demand.
You can not lend magazines. You can’t lend reference collection either (they’re marked
with a yellow sticker and labelled ”nicht entleihbar” on it).
Loan and return machine There is a loan machine
in the library Seybothstraße to shorten waiting. It
enables you to lend up to ten books a time by using
your library card. You can return the books any time
by using the return machine next to the entrance
of the library. Thus you’re not tied to office hours
of the library except the machine’s out of service or
does not work the way it should.
There are no loan and return machines in the library
of Prüfeninger Straße. But you can also return the
books out of office hours. Just put them in the Box in front of the library entrance – done!
Regensburger Katalog (OPAC) OPAC is a public library catalog for investigating among
the stock. OPAC is available at home, too, so reserving and ordering a book, lengthening
the loan or downloading eBooks is easily done.
https://www.regensburger-katalog.de
eBooks Recently there are a lot of eBooks available in the library for downloading and
printing chapter by chapter. Check out the links Online-Literatur and Elektronische Medien
on the intern homepage of the library. (instructions on 38). Just look for eBooks in
OPAC.
Laptops It’s possible to bring your laptop with you. The library provides networking so
you can get access to the internet. For further information please ask the staff or follow
the instructions about the access (whether wireless or with wire) on following site (http:
CIP-Pool & Computer in the library There are lots of computers in the library for investigation.
Moreover there’s a CIP-Pool in the basement.
As well in the library in Prüfening there are some computers.
Copier You need a copy card, which is available in the IGEKO-Shop (see page 39) in the
basement of Seybothstraße or the cafeteria as well as at the administration (1st floor) in
Prüfeningerstraße. Copiers are in the basement of the library (Seybothstraße) or on the
left hand side next to the entrance (Prüfeningerstraße).
reading terrace This is something special: On sunny days you can use the terrace (access
on the basement) for reading books or just getting some fresh air between two learning
periods.
The library as a permanent workspace If you have to go to the library regularly and in
long-term (e.g. bachelor- or master thesis) and thus need a lot of books handy, roller
containers or glass boxes with personal desk are available on demand. You have to apply
early for these features as the amount is limited. The library staff can tell you more what
requirements have to be fulfilled, the costs and the whole procedure.
Further libraries and reading rooms
There are further establishments apart from the libraries at the university of applied sciences
where you can receive literature:
• central library Universität
• in particular reading rooms with special literature. In addition they’re very quiet
places which are opened on sundays, too (at least business- and law reading room).
• in the central library of Regensburg and the four libraries of the particular districts
of Regensburg.
Additional Course Program YOUR STUDIES
Additional Course Program
Subjects with General Educational Value (AW-Fächer)
For students who find their regular studies still not to be enough, or only want to look
beyond their specialist horizons, are welcome to attend an AW-Fach. A clever combination
of some of them leads to additional training with certificate:
• ADA-Certificate: An alternative to the Instructer Certificate of the IHK (chamber of
industry and commerce)
• Agent of Immission Control: Prescription by some companies
• Safety Engineer: Also a prescription sometimes
• Engineer as Businessman: a nice thing if you want to become self-employed
• International Competence: 2 Semesters additional training in cooperation with the
university. Advisable for globetrotters
• Oral Communication (at university)
• Methodological- and Social Competence: nice
• Language Courses: A lot available. And even more at the university (ZSK)
• Technical Sales and Distribution: Makes sense not only if you want to strike a new
path
Virtual University Bavaria (vhb)
vhb is a network of university colleges in Bavaria on the internet. All the different university
colleges should offer diverse lectures online. Thus, the virtual university supplements
the range of lectures of elective subjects with general educational value.
The variety of lectures is enormous and extensive. However, the quality of the lectures
varies greatly.
To be able to use the offers of the vhb, you have to immatriculate under http://www.vhb.
org/. Hereby you need the Novell-Identification of the university. Moreover, just like at
the real Hochschule, you have to re-register. But only at the semesters you want to enroll
in lectures.
Partly you can credit lectures of the vhb-offers as AW-Fächer. The examination board
liable for your field of studies can provide you more information on this.
YOUR STUDIES Final Thesis & Co.
Final Thesis & Co.
Obviously, this booklet is intended not only to provide useful information for freshman
students, but also assistance for senior level students. Therefore, the following pages
contain info on your final thesis and what else you have to take into account if your studies
in Regensburg are amost done. Most of the hints and supports are based on the
experiencies of former foreign students.
Ultimately you can decide on your own about which
topic you want to write in your final thesis, which
professor should supervise it and whether you
want to perform intern or extern. The onliest restriction
of course is to choose a topic related to
your studies. Primarily the supervisor anyway results
from her / his expertise about the topic and
– needless to say – your anti-/sympathy. Just one
question remains:
Which Topic?
Basically different approaches help you for specifying your topic:
• A godlike inspiration ;-)
• The company, where you write your thesis, passes it to you.
• You find a topic on the professor’s homepages
• Discussing a topic with the supervisor of your choice
Editor’s note: Besides - to avoid difficulties and wounded vanity - only target professors of your own
faculty as the first advisor. If the work definitly has to be supervised by a faculty-external professor,
it is mandatory to either make an application (early) or you look for a first advisor of your own faculty
and arrange an inofficial role reversal with the formal second advisor…
External Final Thesis
For an external final thesis you should apply early to appropiate companies to find a suitable
job and topic. The guidline suggests to do so about 6 months before starting work.
Sometimes theses also arise at short notice, but don’t count on that…
Especially bigger enterprises advertise places for theses. Among them, an unsolicited application
often is a way to succes as well. A professor’s recommendation can also mean a
chance for you to get hold of a place. Don’t be too shy to ask for non-binding opportunities.
Many professors try to keep in touch with the companies this way!
Study guide of student’s union – WS11 45

Final Thesis & Co. YOUR STUDIES
The Employment Contract, which the student negotiates with the company (especially in
terms of payment and duration), is not of importance for the university. It only matters
that the undergraduate roughly follows the guidlines of the university. More information
and forms are online on the faculty-specific intranet sites or the internet. The offices of
the faculties also help along.
Characteristics of internal/external final theses
Both versions have in common that the topic will be part of the resume. This should not
be underestimated. However, there is no common opinion about what kind is superior. A
few clues that will help you to decide:
External Thesis
• Payed in most cases, but compensation varies greatly
• Often a diving board to a permanent job in the specific company
• Work experience - somehow
• No secure quality of care
• Binding working hours demanded (mostly)
• Workload depends on the company’s guidlines and basic conditions, they could alter
• More stress possible due to operational demands
• Neglect of written work due to environment
Internal Thesis
• Supervisor always at hand - exception: semester holidays!
• Free arrangement of workload, an advantage if exams still have to be written
• Making parallel to final semester realistic
• No payment by HS.R
• Tasks more interesting due to free choice
More Information on the Final Thesis
At the beginning of the final thesis, both parties should state their expectations clearly and
straight. Depending on the task, the course of studies and the supervisor, the number of
asked pages for example varies widely. Personal preferences are just like this. Some attach
importance on comprehensive introduction to the topic and hereby research, others
dislike academic prelude. A first structure of the thesis and arrangement with the professor
is useful after having set a clear framework. This is important to exclude a digression
YOUR STUDIES Final Thesis & Co.
from the subject right at the beginning. For the written part of the thesis a text processing
program of your choice is advisable. For less frustrating work - but less convenient
formatting - you should give L ATEXa try.
A final thesis features these sections in most cases:
• Title page - Topic, university, faculty, in given case company, date, names of supervisor(s),
surveyor and writer
• Acknowledgements
• Abstract - What is this thesis about? - Formulate in the end
• Table of contents
• Introduction
• Description of the conducted work
• Prospect - How can the compiled work be used in the future and possible subsequent
projects…
• Conclusion - What was achieved and what not and why? Lessons learned, what
other approaches would you suggest now?…
• Appendix
– List of abbreviations
– List of figures / list of tables
– Bibliography
– Attachments
• Declaration of honor - Use form provided by HS.R or on separate sheet
The kind of required directories and their arrangement is free. Furthermore, each faculty
offers guidlines in terms of formatting:
• Fontsize (11pt mostly)
• Line spacing (1,5 mostly)
• Margin (freely, but not too much)
• Paper format (A4 - single-sided)
As this will be a scientific thesis one day you have to take into account additionally:
• An own mental achievement has to be discussed argumentatively
• Items based on approved facts can be used by quoting adequate sources
• Something quoted directly has to be made visible explicitly
• Add a caption to all graphics. Indicate adopted
For administrative issues you have to hand out your work twice - bound of course . One
copy receives your supervisor and one copy collects the state.
Bachelor, what now? YOUR STUDIES
Bachelor, what now?
If your bachelor studies are about to end, don’t forget to think about what you want do
to later on and that there are deadlines to meet if you want to enroll in a master degree
course afterwards!
One crucial point is the fact that you are required to hold already your bachelor degree
at the beginning of the first master semester. Delaying your final thesis into the new
semester means that you run the risk not to be able to anything else in this semester.
Luckily the examination board is able to use wordings of the law (Art. 43 Sec. 5 Par. 3
BayHSchG i.V. m. § 20a APO 2 ). But unfortunately there is no guarantee that they really
do so.
Please be concerned about these pros and cons of a master degree course:
• Is a bachelor degree enough for what I want to do?
• What exactly do I want to do after my studies?
• Can I cope with the financial and psychological challenges for 3-4 more semesters
full-time-study?
• Do I pursue a PhD degree after my master? If yes, a master at university eases the
promotion considerably.
• Do the contents of the master degree course fit to what I want to do later on? - If
not, many master courses at different universities and university colleges focus on
different areas.
• Will I get a job for certain with my bachelor degree? - If not, use a master course as
some kind of bridging…
2 In special cases the university’s administration might allow that your studies have ended even
before aquiring the admission requirements according to paragraphs 1 and 2. Prerequisite: admission
requirements are proven within one year after starting your studies
YOUR STUDIES Hints from Foxes to Rabbits
Hints from Foxes to Rabbits
Re-Registration For each following semester enrolled at a university the students have
to re-register. The procedure always happens in January and June (see schedule on backside
of your student card) and occurs quite comfortable via the debit information you grant
each semester. Changes can be made by using the QIS-function. Our hint: Always record
the date in your mobile and activate the reminder-function! Keep your contact details
(address, room number (applies especially to student residence halls), phone number and
email) especially during the re-registering procedure up to date.
Register for Exams Log in to the QIS-System if you want to register for exams. Authenticate
with your matriculation number and your current NDS-password and choose the
exams you want to participate in. It is no problem to register for more exams than you
finally write - A withdrawal from the registration can be made simply by not appearing on
the exam date. Normally this procedure does not involve a grade of 5 at the initial try.
If you do not participate in an exam at the first possible chance, you automatically will be
registered for this test at the following semester. In case of not show up you will be graded
5! So even if you do not know much, you better come around and at least have a look on
the questions. You will get an idea of what the test is about. At the end of the deadline
to register for exams you can have a look at the qis system to find out if everything has
gone its right way – if not, immediately go to the examination office (see page 28) and let
it rectify. Otherwise the complete plan of your studies could be messed-up!
Illness During the Testing Period For the unlikely case you suffer sudden dizziness, nausea,
diarrhoea or even worse during the testing period you have to consult a doctor and
get your disease certified.
Important! The certificate must contain explicitly that you were not able to participate in
the exam at the specific date and hand it to the examination board of your faculty.
Study/Internship Abroad If you want to go to foreign country it is advisable to start planning
at least one year in advance. There is a lot to organize: VISA, valid passport, vaccinations,
money, scholarships and contacting foreign companies to name the most important
issues. Again, we refer you to Mr Bomke and the International Office (akademisches
Auslandsamt).
Presence It may sound absurd but it is worth attending the lectures. Even if these hours
are spent in sleepy haze you will record some things and thus don’t have to spend time
consuming hours to rework the lectures at home. Besides, you can imagine better on
which contents the docent will focus at the final test.
Study guide of student’s union – WS11 49

Hints from Foxes to Rabbits YOUR STUDIES
Learning Group It is harder to learn alone – or in other words: By working in groups it
is easier to overcome your lack of will power. Many times extensive exercises have to be
handled in addition to the lectures. Cooperation is allowed and welcome, and if do not just
copy/paste but also contribute to the terms of reference by active participation you will
benefit a lot.
Semester on Leave Money, marriage or health might be a reason for some time off. This
is also possible by a semester on leave. Please apply to your faculty in time in order to
get an approval. In a personal conversation your supervisor for studies can tell you more
about this in terms of examination dates, deadlines and so on.
Problems with your Studies You can not go on, are frustrated or similar? We advise you
to ask the responsible supervisor for studies or us, the student council.
Change of the Study Course Do you want to change your study course? Don’t forget to
apply early. Pay attention to registration deadlines. In order to find out if your acquired
grades are recognized at the new course and admission to an advanced semester a personal
conversation with your supervisor for studies is certainly profitable.
Connecta On the search for an internship placement, addresses for diploma (or bachelor/master)
theses it is worthwile to browse through the catalogue of the Connecta (see
76 for more information), as this booklet is really a repository of regional enterprises worth
an internship or similar.
Mentoring The mentoring programme offered by HS.R is an effort for strengthening
women’s networks – especially in technical degree courses. The programme allocates female
students from advanced semesters to female students of basic studies. Apart from
the personal support by supervision of an experienced female student the mentoring is a
chance to get in touch with graduated students and the faculty staff. Participation in this
programme as a mentor counts as an AW-Fach (see 44) in the area of social competence.
You can find out more following this link: http://homepages.hs-regensburg.de/
mentoring
More Answers More answers you will obtain at your student body of your faculty or
under the corresponding pages here in the Student Guide. Mostly experienced students
run the offices of the student bodies and they will at least be able to tell you where to
find answers to any tricky question. Additionally the FoSo created an FAQ area which will
possibly clearify things beforehand: http://foso.de/fragen-antworten/.
A STUDENT’S LIFE
A student’s life
As a student learning, listening to lectures and giving your best performance every day is
not everything. Whether you like sports, going to a concert, partying or enjoying spiritual
events- there is plenty of opportunity to get through a day in the city of Regensburg as
well as on the campus itself. You will find some activities on the following pages.
Cultural activities on the campus
There are a lot of students beyond the students’ council of each faculty commited to
(inter-)cultural activities. Perticularily worth mentioning is the students’ stage, which is
supported by the Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz and located at the Uni Regensburg’s
theatre.
Not only modern but also new as well as serious plays
are regularly staged there. Now and then the mostly
student actors perform a play in the original language
and text.
If you are interested about any plays and dates, you can
get a leaflet called Kultur auf dem Campus from the Studentenwerk
within the current program.
FH-Fest, pub crawl and Co
There are several parties organised by USO e.V. (this is an independent student organisation,
read more about USO e.V. on page 79), such as:
• the highly popular FH-Fest,
• a pub crawl for first-year students,
• a Schafkopfturnier (a bavarian card game),
• a barbecue for the university-elections (with the help of the students council)
They spend most of their revenues on social organisations or the internal inventory (a grill,
tents for various events, and so on), which can also be used by the students councils or
other student groups. If you want to be a barkeeper, DJ or involved otherwise in this organisation,
you may write an email to info@uso-ev.de or simply join one of their regularly
held meetings (the present dates can be found on www.uso-ev.de).
After two months of pure planning, it takes about 60 volunteers for building up all seven
bars and stages, installing technical needs, masking the walls and ordering drinks. It is
Campusfest A STUDENT’S LIFE
possible to dance to clubmusic, live rock music or electro-beats on three areas. All kinds
of drinks are available at the biggest indoor-party of the university: beer, longdrinks, shots,
cocktails and non-alkoholic drinks.
If you want a ticket for this event, you better show up early at the advance sale, because
usually it does not take long until all the 1.200 tickets are sold out.
Campusfest
Another cultural event organised only by students is the Campusfest. It is probably the
biggest outdoor event on the Campus including two stages.
Having taken place for the fourth time in
a row, in 2011 approximately 4000 people
joined the venue. There are local newcomers
as well as national and international
popular bands entertaining the audience.
If you are not keen on music, you may like
to join the sports tournaments (volleyball /
soccer), or getting some cultural insights at
a morning pint or just stroll around enjoing
the frisky atmosphere.
Music Moves & New Year’s concert
Once a term all students of Music and Movement in Social Work present results of
their courses and personal artistical contributions. The New Year’s concert which takes
place in january provides percussions, choir and many more in the music- and moving
room (S015). In June the students perform e.g. dance choreographies or theatre plays
based on improvisation, percussion or choir. Current dates can be obtained on the Social
Work’s web page: http://www.hs-regensburg.de/fakultaeten/sozialwissenschaften/
schwarzes-brett/aktuelles.html.
Student organisations
Mainly the student organisation of each faculty consists of their student councils and
many volunteers. They arrange barbecues, regulars’ tables, parties or something like that
to improve social interactions of their faculty’s students. Some of the student organisations
introduce themselves on page 71.
Ostentor, Andreasstadel) on the other hand there is the modern but also expensive CinemaXX.
In addition to the friendly prices the smaller cinemas sometimes present special
movies such as classics and art films.
The current programme is available on http://altstadtkinos.de and also in the free magazine
WOHIN, which is laid out either on the campus or some public locations. You can also
attend an open air cinema in the summer at castle Pürkelgut. Every tuesday students
show a movie at lecture hall H4 (auditorium, university building). If you would like to know
which one is next just take a look on the following web site: http://www.studikino.de.
Sports at the campus A STUDENT’S LIFE
Sports at the campus
After an exhausting day at the university some students need physical work out to calm
down.
A current version of all sports activities during the term is available on http://www-cgi.
uni-regensburg.de/Einrichtungen/Sportzentrum/ahs/. You have to register early for
your favourite class because in some cases a class has a lot more contestants then the
number it is limited to.
Access to the grounds is guaranteed by a personalized mensacard. Therefore you have to
bring a passport photo with you, which will be attached to your mensacard.
For using the fitness room as well as the swimming hall, sauna, general sports classes
and the climbing wall it is reasonable to buy a combi-ticket for 40 e.
The sports centre is open between mondays and thursdays from 02:00 pm until 10:00pm
during the lecture period, and opened at 02:00 pm and closed at 08:30 pm on fridays.
A STUDENT’S LIFE Sports at the campus
Once a term there is an offer, which enables you to try out all classes first without buying
any ticket within a week. This takes place in the beginning of each term.
The grounds are located behind the Uni’s buildings. It is best to walk all the way over the
campus (mostly straight on) over a little bridge (over a street) and there you are!
Finding accommodation A STUDENT’S LIFE
Finding accommodation
Due to the many students it is quite difficult to find an accomodation in Regensburg, but
you may get lucky with one of the following possibilities.
Appartments
This is the most expensive way for a student to live, but it may be advantageous to have
no roommates you can argue with about cleaning up or similar things. Try out: http://
www.immoscout.de or take a look into the newspapers, e.g. Mittelbayerische Zeitung
http://www.mittelbayerische.de .
Flat sharing community (WGs)
Many students choose this possibility due to the price-performance ratio. Some of the
advantages are (in comparison to the dormitories):
• more room for your own stuff
• you can bring your own stuff
• there is room for a reasonable kitchen
• there is a bigger bathroom
• you can say with whom you want to live with
Dormitories
There are a dime a dozen dormitories in Regensburg. Each of them has other specials to
offer for their residents, such as fitness rooms, sauna, intern bars but also strict rules. If
you want to live in a dormitory you need to apply for it at the owner. The following page
lists most of the dormitories in Regensburg: http://goo.gl/fxMJE. Some of the dormitories
are held by Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz, which allocates their rooms
centrally, see http://www.stwno.de.
Where to buy a bike
You students’ representation
YOU STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATION
Your students’ representation does not only write and publish this study guide. These
students campaign for you, help you with your studies and contribute to a nice student’s
everyday life.
The students’ representation (StuVe) is responsible for two important topics for the students:
The representation of interests in the academic policy and the work in the faculty
student council.
Work in faculty student council stands for the daily contact with and the support of students
of the faculty. That includes for example the collection of lecture scripts and exercises,
information on studies and other topics. Not to forget are the students’ festivities
at the university or further sportive or cultural activities (so to say the social side).
The students’ representation has only that what is carried to it and can only arrange as
much as engagement is brought from the students. A little bit of collaboration – might it
be bringing of transcribed tests, scrips, exercises or copies, helping planning and realization
of festivities and other activities – every effort is very welcome as finally those who
campaign for benefit: the students.
You can find the student’s representations at all locations of the university.
Besides the oftentimes very comfortable work in the faculty, there is also the representative
participation in the academic self-administration of the university as well as the
66 Study guide of student’s union – WS11

YOU STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATION University elections
self-administration of the StuVe in general (so to say the political side). The most important
aspect of the representative participation is the student’s vote for the use of tuition
fees. There, the students have a word in an equal co-determination committee, on faculties’
level as well as on university’s level.
University elections
Every year the election takes place. Thereby, the students’ representation is sent into the
committees of the academical self administration. Every second year the other members
(that are professors and employeess) are also elected. This election is normally called big
election, the one of students only is called the small one.
Also if you have less bearings with academic policy – nevertheless, you should have two
minutes to go voting.
The election is important. Furthermore, it is fundamental that students know about the
work of their representatives. After all, students’ representatives speak for all the students.
The FSIM is the students’ representation of the faculty computer science and mathematics.
It is located at the first floor of the ivory tower (Sammelgebäude) of the university
Regensburg (yes there is some room-sharing with them ;-) and one of the bigger students’
representations at the university of applied sciences.
In summer 2010 they were awarded as first organization the prize
for collegiate engagement at univeristy of the ”Verein der Freunde
der Hochschule Regensburg”.
Besides the regular tasks of a students’ representation, they also arrange
multiple seasonal parties and additional supports willingly bigger
events at the campus like the Campusfest or the FH-Fest.
They also hosted the conference of germans computer science
and mathematics students’ representation in winter-term 2007/08.
Therefore they founded an association to have a legal body for this
and all other engagement.
In the year of mathematics in 2008, the FSIM supported the faculty
at multiple events and also designed and maintained the representational
website for this event. Additionally in this year, the Campusfest was in charge
of the FSIM arranged the first time, which led by growing of this event to the Campus
Nevertheless, the main focus of the association is the direct work of the students’ representation
and also supports study trips as well as the purchase of study books for the
Dynamics e.V.
Behind Dynamics e.V. stands the das Formula Student Team of the Hochschule Regensburg
which consists actually of 60 students of all faculties and semestres.
The common enthusiasm for the racing and the manifested aim to
arrange for an improved qualitiy of education at the Hochschule Regensburg
caused twenty students to found the Dynamcs e.V. in December
2006. Since that time, with the support of the Hochschule
Regensburg and the economy three own racing cars were designed,
constructed and produced. These participated at various offical competitions
of the Formula Student in Europe against international
teams of other universities with success. Every year, the team was able to build the racing
car more innovative and reliable and was thus able to increase the performance on the
events.
Formula Student is a construction competition of the automotive industry. Planning, constructing
and producing of a racing car is a great challange which is worth it. With the
active help of students for this project, they gain an intensive a high practical orientation
and are able to employ their learned theoretical knowledge. Students gain the soft skills
like the interdisciplinary teamwork, time management and competence of methods which
are more and more important in the modern working life, too.
Students also benefit personally from Formula Student. At Dynamics e.V. you can meet
regenics e.V.
regenics e.V. is a union of dedicated students who pursue the goal to participate at a
regenics
electric racing regensburg
The Formula Student is a racing series in which
students of all around the world participate with
their self-built racing cars. The acceleration of the
racing car, driveability, reliability and energy consumption
are rated. Moreover, the presentation of
a thought-out construction concept, cost plan and
business plan is important.
Because of the multifaceted field of responsibilities
of regenics students of all faculties work hand in hand. To realize the dream of an electric
racing car students design circuitries, programm microcontrollers which are responsible
for newly electric actuation or which resume the battery management. A special value is
the light weight construction and so the design of mechanical components calls for high
competence, too. During the building of the car, students with job training are also questioned
because a lot of devices are self produced from students in the factories of the
Hochschule. A powerful team is necessary, too, which is responsible for the organisation
of this huge project. So, sponsors have to be gained and the transport of car and team to
the various events has to be organized. If you join regenics, you have the possibility to realize
this exciting project inside a team and work like in a small company. And oftentimes
you can learn more than in lectures.
