ZINEP DT Tablet<br />
Dosage Forms/Composition<br />
Tablet: Each uncoated dispersible <strong>tablet</strong> containsZinc sulphate momohydrate<br />
equivalent to elemental zinc 20mg.<br />

INDICATION<br />

Warnings/Precautions<br />
Food that are high in calcium/phosphorous should not be taken with zinc sulphate<br />
because they make it harder for the body to absorb zinc sulphate.<br />
Food high in calcium or phosphorous:<br />
Milk, cheese, yogurt, ice-cream, dried beans or peas, lentils, nuts, peanut butter, beer,<br />
cola soft drinks, hot cocoa, etc.<br />
Zinc sulphate can make certain antibiotics less effective.<br />
Adverse Reactions<br />
Nausea, severe vomiting, dehydration and restlessness.<br />
Drug Interactions<br />
Absorption is not affected by iron when given in the ratio iron:zinc::2:1.<br />
Mechanism of Action<br />
Zinc is a naturally occuring mineral important for growth and for the development and<br />
health of body tissues. Zinc sulphate is used to prevent and treat zinc deficiency. Zinc<br />
does quite a bit for the body. First,zinc is crucial for health because it strengthens the<br />
immune system. It is essential for cell division, growth and repair. It also plays an<br />
important role in the detoxification of alcohol in the liver and aides indigestion. Second,<br />
it is involved in over 200 enzymatic reactions and aides the body in the actions of<br />
several hormones such as growth hormone, testosterone, insulin and oestrogen.<br />
Supplements of zinc reduce the duration and severity of acute and persistent diarrhoea<br />
in children. Zinc supplements were calculated to reduce the average stool frequency<br />
and probability of diarrhoea. However, the mechanisms by whcih zinc exerts its antidiarrhoeal<br />
effects have not been fully elucidated.<br />
Therefore, zinc therapy is useful for treating both acute and persistent diarrhoea and<br />
for their prophylaxis.<br />
Usual Dosage<br />
Children:<br />
2-5 months old: <strong>10</strong> mg daily for <strong>10</strong> days.<br />
6 months to 5 years of age: 20 mg daily for <strong>10</strong> days.
Dissolve one <strong>tablet</strong> in a tablespoon of boiled and cooled water and feed it to the<br />
children.<br />
If the child vomits after taking the <strong>tablet</strong>, wait for an hour and then repeat the above<br />
procedure or seek doctor's advice.<br />
Patient Information<br />
In case of missed dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time<br />
for the next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not<br />
take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.<br />
