Speedometers
SPEEDOMETERS
GENERAL:
Speedometers indicate vehicle speed along with providing total mileage and often a
trip mileage reading.
NOTE: Check your local laws/regulations to determine how to properly document
mileage when a speedometer is replaced.
CAN BE USED ON:
Most applications where vehicle speed is desired. Note: in the USA, speedometers
are required for all motor vehicles used on public roadways, consult local laws for
any exceptions.
GOOD FOR:
Accurate speed indication after modifications have been made such as wheel size or
gearing.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Does your vehicle already have an electric sender or are you replacing a mechanical
speedometer. If your system does not already have
an electric sender, a sender can be installed where the
mechanical cable was previously connected.
Stewart Warner does have mechanical speedometers
available that take their signal from the mechanical cable
connected to the transmission.
You can find this gauge in the following
Speed indication and odometer reading.
The Competition Tachs & Gauges line speedometers also
provide two trip meters. The trip meters are accessed
using the included calibration/reset switch which can be
mounted where desired.
HOW IT WORKS:
ELECTRIC
The Stewart Warner electric speedometer is connected to
a speed sensor via wires. The electric
speedometers can be calibrated &
recalibrated as needed after gearing
or tire size changes by driving a
specified distance and
1) Competition Tachs & Gauges
- use the reset button to set calibration
2) On other Stewart Warner
electric speedometers - set the dip
switches on
the rear of the unit per the installation
instructions
MECHANICAL
Mechanical speedometers are connected
via cable to the transmission
speed take-off. If you require a new
cable contact us to find a distributor
near you that makes these cables.
NOTE: If your vehicle currently has
a mechanical speedometer, you can
convert to an electric speedometer
by connecting a one of Stewart Warners
speed sensors to the speedometer
connection on the transmission.
