“Find something you really like to
do so that you’ll stick to it and make
that activity a part of your lifestyle,”
says Trish Conley-Knight, program
manager at the Bracebridge Sportsplex.
Many recreation centres and private
gyms offer classes and courses to keep
you interested.
“You need activities that will increase
your heart rate three to five times a
week for a minimum of 30 minutes,
such as an aquafit class or zumba fitness,
and then at least twice a week
include some strength training,” Conley-Knight
says.
“Ideally,” she adds, “try to find a
friend or group of friends that you can
do these activities with to keep motivated.”
Most important to realizing your
dream of fitting into a bikini this summer
or staving off high blood pressure
is to commit to healthier living for the
rest of your life – not just next year.
“Failure comes from the inability to
accept that being fit is a lifestyle – a
continuous journey as opposed to a
singular destination,” says Marshall.
“This lifestyle requires permanent
changes to nearly every facet of your
existence, a shift most aren’t willing to
embrace.”
Conley-Knight agrees.
“Unless a person truly sees the value
in being physically active and makes it
a part of his lifestyle, he won’t continue
with it; there needs to be buy-in.”
Andre Bourque recommends making
physical fitness your resolution
now, before you don’t have a choice.
“The bottom line is that we fear losing
our health more than we work
towards being healthy; lose our health
and all of a sudden we’re motivated!”
Don’t wait for a health crisis to find
your motivation, he says.
“An alternative solution is being
proactive and pursuing a healthy
lifestyle. The reward,” he says, “will follow
the effort.”
