While the story of Peter Pan is familiar to most, this particular production will make local history. Some of the actors will be flying, which will be a first for the Algonquin Theatre. “It’s expensive, but to not have stage flight in Peter Pan would not be doing justice to the production,” says director Gregg Evans. The legendary Foy family of New York City will supply all of the training and equipment for their flights. Peter Foy made his first stage flight in 1939 at the age of 14. In 1947, he directed his first stage flights of Peter Pan. In 1954, he directed the flights in the well-known production starring Mary Martin. “Getting a chance to work with them (the Foys) will be exciting for everyone,” says Evans. Foy estimates he has directed the flight in over 3,000 productions of Peter Pan alone. The family company, Flying by Foy, provides flight direction for a wide variety of productions By Sandy Lockhart A new program has been developed to build Muskoka’s creative economy and help area youth learn more about the arts as a career option that can allow them to stay in the area. Project co-ordinator Carolyne Wagland says the new Creative Paths project is all about investing in the next generation while making the community aware that the arts are important from an economic perspective. Creative Paths was launched at the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre on Monday, Nov. 30. The program is made possible through a $40,000 grant from the province of Ontario’s Cultural Strategic Investment Fund, through the Ministry of Culture. It is expected to benefit the creative community, high school students and the community’s corporate partners. Many familiar Muskoka faces will grace the stage when Peter Pan comes to Huntsville. Jessica Bacon will play Peter, Emma Gibbs will play Wendy, Bob Stone will play Hook and Ryan Burda will play Smee. The Arts Council of Muskoka is spearheading this program in partnership with the Huntsville Festival of the Arts and the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. “I’m looking forward to getting a lot of people engaged,” says Wagland. “We can even bring the arts in to teach other subjects.” For instance, she suggests talking to a business class about social media techniques explaining that it all takes creative thinking. “Art is too often seen in a really narrow scope,” Wagland says. “It is much more than a paintbrush and canvas. The arts all integrate so well with other subjects.” Creative Path aims to link students with artistic mentors. The students will be matched with an appropriate mentor from January to May 2010. Students will also be able to earn volunteer hours for the time spent with their mentor. A series of art mentoring, creativity workshops, and creativity related workshops are planned for secondary school classes in Muskoka over the next six months. The year’s work will wrap up with a creative economy conference in September 2010. “The exemplary projects will be presented at the creative symposium in September,” says Wagland. “This takes it to the next level.” stage manager and Rob Saunders will be in charge of marketing and promotion. The Huntsville Festival of the Arts is producing the show with most of the actors coming from the North Muskoka Players. Gregg Evans will be directing the show. The Huntsville Rotary Club will construct all the sets and provide the backstage crew for the shows. Profits from the shows will be split between the Huntsville Festival of the Arts and the Huntsville Rotary Club and will be directed to the charities of their choices. This is the same group that presented the very successful production of The Wizard of Oz in 2009. Last year’s production generated $21,000. Peter Pan is the story of a mischievous boy who refuses to grow up. He lives on the small island of Neverland where he leads a gang called the Lost Boys in adventures with Indians, fairies and pirates. Peter can fly and one evening flies into the lives of the Darling children and takes them on a magical adventure. “It’s magical,” says Evans. “It appeals to young people as well as older people. Everybody knows the story. It highlights great lead roles for kids.” Program introduces youth to arts industry Photograph: Don McCormick Keynote speakers, creativity workshops and break out sessions will be part of the event. Wagland already has some artists and art groups interested in taking part and mentoring students. Wagland encourages anyone interested in taking part to contact her. “It would be a perfect match for any group that needs volunteers,” she says. Creative Paths will be looking for creativity workshop leaders to work with teachers interested in integrating the arts into their classrooms. She is also pleased that the District of Muskoka has acknowledged the arts with a mention of it in the strategic plan.
