Advanced Virtuality Lab (AVL) at the
Sammy Ofer School of
Communications
Today, at the start of the twenty-first
century, people spend an increasing
amount of time in digital negotiations on
the cybernetic field. Where is society
headed? In the future, will people spend
large parts of their lives being represented
by avatars in three-dimensional virtual
worlds, together with masses of people
from all over the real world? The AVL
handles a variety of multidisciplinary
projects that try to understand virtuality on
the technological, scientific, societal and
cultural levels. It builds virtual worlds and
the interfaces that will be used in the
future, investigates human behavior and
the human mind in a virtual reality setting,
and tries to understand the mutual
relations between the virtual and the real
in human lives. For additional information,
Laboratory for Digital Media Research
and Innovation at the Sammy Ofer
School of Communications
The lab focuses on the field of digital and
interactive media, with an emphasis on analyzing
media consumers’ motives for participating and
being involved in a multiplatform media
experience. The lab combines empirical research
and the development and production of new
media experiences in cooperation with media
and technology entities from the industry.
The Center for Internet Psychology
(CIP) at the Sammy Ofer School of
Communications
In a world in which the internet influences every
aspect of our lives, understanding its
psychological implications makes it possible to
highlight the internet’s positive aspects and create
a friendlier environment for internet users. CIP
was established in order to research the factors
that influence the psychological wellbeing of the
internet user and possibilities for personal and
group empowerment via the internet. CIP
focuses on creating a trilateral dialogue between
the academic community, the large community
of internet users and the business community.
In addition to academic publications, CIP also
publishes material for the general public and
hosts international seminars that provide a
platform for dialogue between Israel and
foreign experts. For additional information, see
Asper Institute for New Media Diplomacy
at the Sammy Ofer School of
Communications
The institute’s researchers and students work
to broadcast audiovisual information via new
media such as social networks, blogs and
viral marketing campaigns. In addition, the
institute conducts academic research on
changing public opinion in virtual arenas. In
2008, the institute launched the Asper Fellows
Program, through which IDC Herzliya
students participate in an intensive training
program on creating and disseminating
internet content. At the end of the training
period, students create content that presents
various aspects of Israel and disseminate it
via new media channels. The institute is
headed by the Sammy Ofer School of
Communications’ Dean Dr. Noam Lemelshtrich
Latar. For additional information, see
