LOOKING AHEAD TO 2012 The BID is looking forward to an exciting and busy 2012! We will begin the new year by formally introducing our brand new free iPhone app! We are the first business improvement district to have its own iPhone app that is GPS based, i.e. it will search for what you’re looking for based on your current location. We are confident that it will be a great marketing tool for our neighborhood by giving visitors and residents alike an easy way for them to navigate their way around the fabulous stores, restaurants, bars and events on the Lower East Side. Later in 2012, we will follow this up by releasing an app for the Android platform. The BID’s plans to expand its boundaries are also moving ahead. We hope to expand our boundaries to go from the Bowery to Clinton Street from east to west, and roughly from E. Houston Street to Canal Street from north to south (with the exclusion of the southwestern portion of this area which will be in the Chinatown BID). We anticipate having our public meetings in very early 2012, and then taking our expansion to a legislative process with the goal of formally expanding by early 2013. We also have exciting plans to branch out in other ways. The board has authorized the formation of a new sister organization, the Lower East Side Development Corporation. The LESDC will be looking for new development projects that will contribute to the overall well-being of the Lower East Side community. These projects can include such things as a new small business incubator, community facilities and affordable housing, just to name a few. Thanks to the Lawyers Alliance, we are working with the firm of Morgan Lewis & Bockius who are donating their services to us pro bono to help us legally form the new organization. Beginning in January, we will also be working with business students from CUNY’s Baruch College on creating a business plan. There are several other BIDs in New York that also have a local development corporation affiliate, and we will be conferring with those groups as our new local development corporation gets organized. 20 y Lower East Side Annual Report 2011
We will also conduct more town hall forums with our members like we did this past fall. Our first town hall was a great success, as we discussed all of our programs and events that are helping the business community, and learned from our local businesses what they are looking for from the BID. It was a great dialogue with our members that will only continue to grow throughout 2012. We are also very excited about our upcoming 2012 LES Neighborhood Guide. Thanks to our friends at Brandsway Creative, we were able to secure the two lead actors of HBO’s hit show How to Make it in America, which is filmed extensively in the LES, to be our cover models! We are thrilled that Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk will grace the pages of our new guide, and we are also looking forward to the Essex Street Market being featured in our guide for the first time! Finally, after many years of fits and starts, we are very excited about a brand new event series that will take place Sundays on Orchard Street between E. Houston and Delancey. As everyone knows, those three blocks of Orchard have been closed off to vehicular traffic on Sundays since 1973! Unfortunately, the huge crowds that used to line the street to go shopping are gone and have been for a long time. Thanks to an agreement that we reached the Mayor’s Street Activities Permit Office, we will have the opportunity to have a pilot event on those three blocks in the spring. Tentatively called “Daylife” we intend to bring a new vitality to Orchard Street on Sundays, and if we are successful with our first event, we will have the opportunity to have several more events just like it in 2012. Our goal is to bring thousands of new visitors and New Yorkers to re-discover Orchard Street and the Lower East Side, and we at the BID will keep day after day to making those goals a reality!
