DEAR FRIENDS OF THE LOWER EAST SIDE,
2011 has been a tremendous year for the LES BID. We
have accomplished so much for our Lower East Side
community, and we’re just getting warmed up! We are
heading into 2012 with a full head of steam and we
can’t wait for what’s in store in the coming months.
Our new Visitor Center at 54 Orchard Street played
host to thousands of tourists and residents alike, as
people from all over came by to get recommendations
on where to shop and eat in the neighborhood, pick
up one of our great publications, get their parking
validated or just learn more about the LES. The Visitor
Center and BID office has turned out to be everything
we imagined and more, and if you haven’t been,
we welcome you to stop by and pay us a visit.
This past year, we launched a terrific new website,
completely overhauled our LES Neighborhood Guide into
something truly special, turned our LES Gallery Guide
into a quarterly publication which is now replete with
exhibit information and produced a new LES Food Guide
to highlight our eating and drinking establishments.
We also had a year filled with great events that drew
thousands of people to the LES. Whether it was our
new Third Thursday art gallery event series, the one and
only NYC Apple Day, our outdoor fashion show, Fashion
Forward, or our Pride Goes East block party, we made
the Lower East Side come alive throughout the year! Of
course, we also take pride in our important collaborations
with Community Board 3, the 7th Precinct, the precinct
council, other local community organizations and our
terrific local elected officials who make it all work.
In conclusion, you may be wondering about the unusual
shape of this report. Last year, we produced our annual
report in this postcard book format, and we received
so much positive response that we decided to repeat
the format again this year! So, after you’ve finished
reading this, please feel free to use the cover as a
postcard to send to friends or family and encourage
them to come to our wonderful neighborhood to shop,
dine, have a drink and, of course, have a great time!
