MY WORLD / interview Mimi Grachangnetara You speak of having charisma in every performance. What do you mean by this? It’s not easy to describe the word “charisma”. The meaning of charisma includes more than just beauty. It is also the appeal that captures the mind. Charisma is everything that is manifested in one’s personal character, anything that distinguishes the great from the mediocre. It is originality that can never be imitated by anyone else. In this context, charisma should be referred to as “charm”. PICHET KLUNCHUN Trained from the age of 16 with one of Thailand’s most prominent khon (Thai classical masked dance) masters, this performance artist is on a mission to take Thai classical dance to an international level one step at a time. What is the difference between performing for a Thai audience and for an international crowd? Nothing different. When I perform, I give it my everything no matter who it’s for. The only difference is, when I perform in Thailand, the warmth is more palpable as I’m performing at home. How important is it for the audience to understand some of your interpretations? For example, must they have read the Ramayana in order to truly appreciate your work? It is important for the audience to understand my interpretation, but they don’t have to understand everything. They should at least know what I am trying to do or say in my piece. Audiences don’t have to have a deep understanding of the Ramayana to appreciate my work. Actually, some of the people who do even get confused! Below, a performance of Nijinsky Siam Your performances have been described by critics as “daring” and “unconventional”. Do you agree? Absolutely. My works are based on sincerity. I didn’t have any expectations in terms of financial success when I created them. I only wanted to bring Thai classical dance – something that I truly love – into the contemporary age. All of my works communicate directly with the audience. That’s why people consider them daring because it’s not normal for a Thai classical dance performance to communicate with the audience. Why is there little interest in Thai performance art amongst Thai youth? Will this change? Thai performance art is no different to traditional Thai costumes. They are beautiful to look at, but irrelevant in the present time. They only work on special occasions such as the Thai New Year. I don’t believe the younger generation will ever be interested if traditional performances are not developed to suit the current times. Every artist strives to accomplish a mission – as a world-class Thai performance artist, what is yours? I want to give back to my homeland. As a traditional Thai artist, it is my duty to contribute to society and to help my country through my performances. I want to strengthen Thais’ faith and love for Thai classical arts. To what do you attribute your success in the international arena? Faith in the arts, self-discipline in practising, the belief that one should never stop learning and never compete with anyone. What do you envision for the Chang Theater, which you have set up in Bangkok? Chang Theater will have at least three performances throughout the year. The first show was in March. The theater is located in the Thai-Muslim area, so I want it to be a public space where both Buddhists and Muslims can bond – where they can strengthen ties through the arts. There will be a performance called Junk from late April until June.
