Summer Reading Program
MCCS Libraries’ 2013 Summer
Reading Program, “Have Book
Will Travel,” has everything you
need to get your little one ready to read
this summer. The first 1,500 children to
register will receive a special gift. Kids
that keep reading can earn prizes. Prizes
are great, but keeping children reading
to combat summer reading loss is even
better. Reading just six books over
the summer can be enough to offset
reading loss and provide children with a
jump-start on the upcoming school year.
The program is for readers 11 and
under and 12 to 18. For our tweens
and younger, the goal during this sixweek
program is for children to read,
or be read to, a total number of hours
depending on their age category.
Teens will target a higher goal by any
combination of reading, completing
brain-teasing quizzes and attending
library events. Small incentive prizes
will be awarded for making progress
along with a chance to win grand prizes
at the end.
This year’s program begins June 23
and runs through August 4. The last
day to register is July 28. Participating
libraries are Camps Courtney, Foster
and Kinser.
For more information, stop by one of
Peppers originated in Central
America and South America
and were first commercially
produced in the U.S. in 1925. Bell
peppers vary in color and flavor
depending on the variety of the plant
and the stage of the ripeness. For
example, a red bell pepper is simply
a mature green bell pepper. As bell
peppers age, the flavor becomes
increasingly sweeter and milder. Bell
peppers provide a powerful dose of
vitamin C, an antioxidant that may be
effective in preventing certain cancers.
In fact, green bell peppers contain
roughly twice as much vitamin C as
oranges while red bell peppers have
three times as much vitamin C as
the green varieties. Bell peppers also
Camp Hansen
provide vitamin B6, phytochemicals
such as lycopene and beta-carotene,
folate, potassium and plenty of fiber.
When purchasing bell peppers,
look for well-shaped, firm and glossy
peppers that feel heavy for their
size and are free of soft or wrinkled
areas, cracks, slashes or black spots.
Unwashed bell peppers can be stored
in a bag in the refrigerator for about
a week. There are numerous ways
to increase the color and variety in
your diet with the addition of bell
peppers. Try adding bell peppers to
salads, pastas, omelets, stir fry and
casseroles. Hit the farmer’s markets
or commissary and buy a variety of
bell peppers to eat at home
and work as a healthy snack.
Junior
Golf
Clinics
The summer has arrived on Okinawa. With longer daylight hours,
warmer weather and—best of all—no school, it’s the perfect time
of the year to introduce your child to the sport of golf. The best
way to familiarize children to the game is to enroll them into a good
golf program that not only teaches but also inspires confidence on and
off the course. This summer, Taiyo Golf Club is offering $25 junior golf
clinics for children and teens. Before you know it, your little Tiger Woods
or Ai Miyazato will be breaking 100 and offering you driving tips.
The clinics will provide young, aspiring golfers with tips and advice
about the game of golf. Topics to be covered this year include chipping,
putting, fine-tuning one’s golf swings, actual game instruction and
course etiquette. Selecting a learning program that nurtures their
interest and stresses having fun is not only vital to the growth of their
game, it can also help instill discipline in other aspects of their lives.
Additionally, the sport is a fantastic way to get out and spend quality
time with your children and family while doing something you all enjoy.
Summer Junior Golf Clinics are offered for two different age
categories; 5 to 9 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 10 to 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Sessions run on June 18 to 21, July 9 to 12, July 23 to 26 and August 6
to 9, and are open to all DoD ID card holders within the age limits. Call
Taiyo Golf Club at 622-2004 for more information.

ryan vs. courtney
Weather
Courtney: What’s up with the weather lately? I know we’re supposed to be in
the thick of rainy season, but the past couple weeks have been pretty sunny.
I’m used to taking my canoe to work this time of year. What gives?
Ryan: Rainy season usually lasts through June. It looks like it ended way early this
year, though not officially. I think it’s because of that global warming and the polar
bears turning brown.
C: While many sun-worshippers may enjoy a drier season, I’ve heard that Okinawa
counts on the heavy rain to fill up the reservoirs that help out when it doesn’t rain
as often. It’s like saving for a rainy day—except the opposite. Should we be worried
this year?
R: No, because even with the supposed short rainy season, the heavy rain we’ve
had so far has already filled up our reserves for this year to full capacity. And water
shortages aren’t too much of a concern anymore for Okinawa since most houses
are equipped with a water tank. If anything, smaller islands are more at risk.
C: That’s a relief. Although, I guess you are already accustomed to cutting back on
water by only showering twice a week so it wouldn’t be a problem for you. We also
just started typhoon season, right? I guess I should start stockpiling Pop-Tarts. Any
advice on what else I should include in my survival kit, or will Pop-Tarts cover it?
R: For you, Pop-Tarts will cover it. For everyone else, here’s a quick list: flashlight
with extra batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, snacks, can opener, first
aid supplies, medications, radio, pet care items and food, towels/rags/mops and
candles. When a typhoon is ready to hit, fill your bathtub with water, turn your
refrigerator and freezer to the highest setting, secure your outside objects and turn
off non-essential electrical items.
C: I think people who were here for last year’s car-flipping typhoon Jelawat will make
typhoon preparation a priority this year. I wish there was a way to tie your kei cars
down during typhoons. Is a typhoon any different than a hurricane in the states?
R: Typhoons and hurricanes are the same thing. Hurricanes form in the Atlantic and
typhoons form in the Pacific. There are typically more typhoons than hurricanes (25 to
30 per year vs 10 to 15 per year) and typhoons are known to be stronger than hurricanes.
C: What is the strongest typhoon to hit Okinawa?
R: We’ve had a few strong typhoons over the years. Typhoons Muifa, Songda
and Bart were all category five storms with winds reaching over 110 mph. Luckily
Okinawa was built with typhoons in mind. Everything is made of thick bulky cement
to withstand years of typhoon abuse. We’ve been fortunate to have very minimal
damage even after going through numerous super typhoons.
C: Yes, I am thankful for the concrete walls that surround me and the unsightly bars
that fortify my windows. At least they serve a purpose.
